Kelso man finds unexploded Japanese mortar
KELSO, Wash. (AP) - A Kelso man out walking his dog found a small black cylinder with a yellow and red stripe. The Cowlitz County sheriff's office says it turned out to be an undetonated Japanese mortar from the 1930s.
The man says he found the device in a field near the Kelso airport Thursday evening.
Authorities called in an ordnance disposal unit from Fort Lewis, which took the shell to a safe area and detonated it early Friday.
The Daily News in Longview says officers speculate that someone may have found the shell at their home and left it in the field.
