Man arrested in bombing of police car
SEATTLE -- Investigators have arrested a man they say destroyed an Orting police cruiser with a pipe bomb.
Terry Overton was arrested over the weekend and has been indicted on federal charges of illegal manufacturing and possesion of explosives, and destruction of property using an explosive.
"This was a heinous crime due to the unpredictability of improvised explosive devices, combined with being placed in a public area," said Kelvin Crenshaw, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. "This could have been a far more serious incident."
The explosion on July 11, 2006 occurred in the Orting Police Department's parking lot early in the morning and was discovered when officers returned to work later that day.
ATF spokeswoman Julianne Marshall said federal investigators worked with local police officials over the last year, but she would not comment on what led them to Overton or what they suspect the motive for the bombing may have been.
