Accused attorney files to run for office far away from home
PORT ANGELES, Wash. -- He's been accused of sexually harassing a former client and driving under the influence, but it appears the harsh allegations have not sapped David Fox's political ambitions.
Fox met Friday's deadline to file as a candidate for political office, but not for Clallam County prosecutor position as he had previously announced. Instead, the Port Angeles attorney filed for Congress, and not for the 6th Congressional District in which he lives.
Fox has filed for the House of Representatives seat in Washington state's 5th Congressional District, which includes Spokane. Residency in the district is not required for a Congressional office.
Fox, 49, was released without bail Thursday after the King County Prosecutor's Office failed to file charges within 72 hours after his arrest late Sunday evening.
A Port of Seattle police report said a ticket agent called authorities late Sunday to report that a man wearing a floppy hat, khaki shorts and a Hawaiian shirt repeatedly pulled out a knife and asked "weird questions."
"The driver was unsteady on his feet and kept repeating the same questions, telling me over and over that I need to call the Clallam County Sheriff's Office so they could tell me who he was and that he was running for office," the report said. "He told me over and over that he is an attorney, and that I have no right to stop him."
Another officer spotted a marijuana pipe on the passenger's seat, and a search turned up a bag of marijuana and prescription pills for which Fox had no prescription, the report said.
Leesa Manion, chief of staff for King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg, said charges were not been filed because the office is awaiting the results of a toxicology test and other reports. Charges may still be filed once the reports are finished, she said.
Two days before the arrest, the state Attorney General's Office said it would not file charges against Fox after investigating allegations of sexual misconduct with a former client and introduction of contraband into Clallam County Jail.
The Clallam County sheriff has said Fox admitted engaging in sexual activity with his client but claimed it was consensual. In previous interviews, Fox has claimed he's fallen victim to a "gay witch hunt," and that his clients often fall in love with him.
Fox, who filed as a Democrat, has not returned several phone calls requesting comment. He also could not be reached at home on Friday evening.
Five others have filed for 5th Congressional District seat, including incumbent Republican Cathy Rodgers of Spokane.
The 5th Congressional District covers the Eastern Washington counties of Okanogan, Ferry, Stevens, Pend Oreille, Lincoln, Spokane, Adams, Whitman, Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield, and Asotin.
