SEATTLE -- Starting Monday, commuters will have a new way to get to work without having to sit in traffic. In fact, commuters may be able to avoid driving altogether.

A new Lake Union water taxi will run people up and down the lake aboard an electric boat.

After four years of renting boats on Lake Union, the Electric Boat Company decided to meet the demand it saw for a scheduled water taxi.

Company spokesperson Jennifer Towne said it brings all of Seattle's neighborhoods closer while freeing commuters from traffic woes.

"Fremont, Westlake Landing, Center of Wooden Boats. And then the Eastlake route is Chandlers all the way up (to) Ivar's at the north end of the lake," she said.

Towne said the company believes the new street car from downtown Seattle will bring even more people down to the waterfront.

"I really think the timing is right," she said. "The street car will be running in December. So you will actually be able to come to Fremont, for instance, and never have set foot in a car."

The water taxi runs will also be coordinated with metro bus schedules to make the option more convenient for commuters.

"And not have to worry about traffic parking, any of those type of things. That's pretty unique," Town said.
