Crash leaves 4-year-old dead, mother injured

A mother and her 4-year-old daughter were injured, the girl fatally, in a car accident on Highway 101 on Wednesday night.

Trooper Krista Hedstrom said the pair from Shelton was headed north on the roadway when the mother tried to switch lanes about 5 miles south of Shelton, then overcorrected for an unknown reason. The car veered off the road and crashed into a tree at approximately 6 p.m.

The crash trapped the two inside their car, Hedstrom said, prompting a rescue by emergency crews.

The young girl was airlifted to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. She was pronounced dead at approximately 7:40 p.m.

The mother was airlifted to Tacoma General Hospital with serious injuries. Her condition is not known.
