SEATTLE -- Your zip code may be tipping your scale, according to a study by the researchers at the University of Washington.

The study, which was conducted in King County, found that property values can predict obesity rates better than education or income. Researchers claim in neighborhoods with less expensive homes have fewer supermarkets and parks around, which contributes to a higher obesity rate. The opposite is true, researchers claim, in areas with higher-priced homes.

So where does your neighborhood fit in?

The study found in several neighborhoods in south King County, more than 25 percent of the residents were considered obese. These neighborhoods include Renton, Kent, Auburn, Federal Way and Burien.

"That's sad," said Andrea Austin, a resident of south King County.

The thinnest zip codes, the study found, were in Bellevue, Mercer Island and several Seattle neighborhoods including Magnolia and Green Lake.

"For people in the higher income, they might have more money to buy healthier food," said Bao Vu, a resident who lives in a high-obesity zip code.

Lead researcher Adam Drewnowski said that parents who work two jobs to make ends meet and don't have time to cook meals rely on ready-made meals that tend to be cheaper but also higher in fat and calories.

Austin said the findings make sense.

"Fast food's just easy to get to," she said. "You know, McDonald's is just down the street there and then there's Burger King and Taco Del Mar and stuff, so it's just really hard to find good healthy food."

Matthew Larson, who lives in one of the thinnest zip codes in the area, said what you see every day also plays a role.

"I think it's more involved in your surroundings, the more things you see and the more people influence you, around you," he said. "I mean seeing these people here exercising makes me want to do more."
