Grandmother helps sway suspect's decision to surrender
TACOMA -- One suspect in a shooting that left a beloved Tacoma woman dead surrendered to police late Saturday night.
19-year-old Manny Castillo is now in jail on suspicion of second-degree murder and drive-by shooting. He's expected to make his first appearance Monday.
The shooting took place Thursday night after a fight outside the home of Lisa Melancon, a Tacoma city employee who was shot dead outside her door after she called 911 to report the disturbance.
The suspect who was arrested "is believed to be the subject involved in the fight just before the shooting," Mark Fulghum of the Tacoma Police Department said in a statement.
Castillo's grandmother says he turned himself in after feeling guilty and talking with her.
"I want my grandson back," said Lyn Foster. "He's only 19 years old."
Foster told KOMO News her grandson and two men were in his car. She says the group drove to Lisa's neighborhood to fight over some angry text messages Castillo's girlfriend received.
But she says he didn't pull the trigger.
"No, he didn't pull the trigger, he didn't drive the car," Foster said. "All he did was, he got in the car to leave and the next thing he knew he heard a gun shot."
Investigators believe Castillo and two other men got in a fight next door from Lisa's house. Police say Castillo jumped in his car, and that's when one of two men in the vehicle opened fire, killing Lisa on her front porch.
"He didn't know there was a gun there are the time until he heard it go off," Foster said.
Police are still searching for the gunman. Meanwhile, Lisa's husband Joe wants someone to give investigators a tip to make more arrests.
"Do the right thing," Joe Melancon said. "If you know something, say something... it's hard to sit there. Just do the right thing."
Foster admits her grandson did the wrong thing and says she feels sorry for Melancon's family, especially Lisa's 19 year old son, who is now without a mother.
"A lady died, she's got children and she's got a family," Foster said. "And she's got a mother and father and it's just upset everybody."
There's now a fund to help the family with funeral expenses and you can make donations at any Columbia Bank.
In the meantime, Melancon's memorial is being planned and will most likely be on Wednesday.
