MORTON, Wash. - A badly decomposed body found next to a Lewis County lake on Wednesday has been tentatively identified as a man wanted for murder from Denver, Colo.

The body was found lying near the bank of Riffe Lake by a recreational boater. The remains were so badly decomposed that investigators initially could not tell whether the body was male or female.

Detectives later located an I.D. card in a backpack near the body belonging to a 49-year-old Colorado man, said Lewis County Sheriff Steve Mansfield.

Positive identification has not been made but detectives learned the I.D. card belonged to a man wanted for murder from Denver, Colorado. His name has not been released.

The wanted man's vehicle was found near Blue Lake Campground, outside of Randle, on April 26. The vehicle was impounded at the time, but the suspect was not found, Mansfield said.

According to Denver law enforcement officials, the man is wanted in connection with the murder of his girlfriend in March 2010.

Detectives are working with the Lewis County coroner to determine cause of death and to make a positive identification.
