An hour later, suspect arrested only 1 block from burglary

SEATTLE -- Despite having an hour head start on police following an early morning burglar at Joe's Mart downtown, the suspect was only able to get a block away before he was arrested, according to the Seattle Police Department.

According to police, the man used a cinder block to break the glass door out of Joe's Mart at Second and Pike around 4 a.m. Friday.

With the store's alarm sounding, the man took about 15 seconds to grab some cigarettes from behind the counter and take off, according to police.

An officer arrived on the scene and spent an hour waiting for the store's owner and reviewing surveillance footage, which gave the officer a good view of the burglar.

When the officer was finally free to search the area, he found the 59-year-old suspect a block away in the 1500 block of Third Avenue.

The man was arrested and booked into King County Jail.
