Arlington residents say squatters have them living in fear

ARLINGTON, Wash. -- Several homeowners in the Highland View Estates neighborhood of Arlington spent their entire weekend clearing out brush and trees. They're looking for a better view - not of the mountains or water - but of what is terrorizing them from the woods adjacent to their property.
"The tree branches were all the way down to the ground and you could just hear them back there," Alan Churchill said of the squatters. "Everybody's getting scared now and they shouldn't have to."
Churchill and his neighbors says homeless people have set up camp in their neighborhood.
"They stay in people's crawl spaces, attics, leaving drug paraphernalia," said Jon Storms.
Several neighbors blame three homeless people living in the woods and vacant homes in the area with breaking into homes.
Jon Storms' wife Shawna led me through the woods to the encampment they found.
"I don't know what these people are capable of," she said.
Shawna said she and others have found drug paraphernalia back in the woods and they believe the squatters are stealing to support their drug habits.
On Saturday night, two teenagers got a scare when a man came running out of the woods.
"We heard a bunch of noise and we turned around and I turned my flashlight on and somebody, a homeless person was running at us," said Leif Sesby. "It was scary, felt like my head was going to explode, adrenaline."
Most people in this neighborhood added outdoor security lights, even installed house alarms, but they still don't feel safe.
On Sunday they said they discovered a vacant house they believe the homeless people are squatting in. Inside there are disturbing dolls, and books outlining legal rights.
"You know we don't know if they have guns or a knife, or you know if we're chasing them we don't know if we're going to get shot or stabbed," Churchill said.
Police say they are doing all they can, but when officers get the homeless to move on they just set up shop somewhere else.

I live 2 houses down from this. We aren't scared, we've rallied! I understand that homelessness is an issue, however, they are squatting and breaking into houses as well, and we will not stand for that. Take your drugs and issues to the local shelter, not to the neighborhood!
There is one cure for zombies.....and we all know what that is. The cure starts with YOU. When the "squatters" feel about as "safe" as we do while they are around...they will go somewhere else....pretty simple, if you ask me. Just flush them OUT.
@TreeTopFlyer which is what we are doing. Plus all of us have turned on our porch lights and watch the house and woods that they are squatting in closely. We've rallied and while the police have told us it's dangerous and risky to take matters into our own hands by scaring them off, I say "at least we are getting off our butts and doing something about it!!!"
Homelessness is just more of the same old problem..... I realize they have to squat somewhere, but I also realize nobody wants them around. Mental health issues to the extreme make them extremely unpredictable along with the mood altering substances most of them partake in. sad.
We can thank Reagan for a lot of that when he kicked the assylum doors open. Most of these people just need a little mental help and a chance at a job. Once your on the streets its virtually impossible to become a productive member of society again. They're not all criminals. A lot of them are just people that have lost their jobs and fallen on hard times. Would be nice if there were actually as many christians as there claims to be. Just give them supplies to help them out a little. They'll treat you fairly if you do for the most part. @Funky-Munky
@Funky-Munky    " I realize they have to squat somewhere...."   Do they?  How about "squatting" in one of the innumerable bum shelters, where they won't be allowed to use illegal drugs and alcohol quite so flagrantly as they do in these encampments and where neighborhood children, residents and properties are not placed at imminent risk of harm? Â
Â
Suggesting that this "squatting" is their only alternative has the effect of legitimizing this behavior. Â They are doing this only because they can, and they choose this option because the rules at the shelters put a damper on their "fun". Â Â If this sort of behavior is met with an immediate, aggressive response from the police and community, then it will cease to become a viable option for them.....something that any affected property owner will sincerely appreciate.Â
There will be thousands more camps like this in Mitt Romney's America. He can outsource everything but the drug addicts.
@KOMO_Sapiens - Have no doubts that you're more correct than you know. If people would do their own research independent of Fox news and the media rhetoric spoon fed daily, they might refrain from launching personal attacks at people who are expressing an opinion about a candidate.Â
Â
I didn't see you insulting anyone, therefore it is embarrassing as a fellow human to see that others felt the need to sink to ad hominem remarks.  Shame on their glaring immaturity.
Â
@Smokin Bear another one in whom the crazy is strong...
@LockesChild Â
Â
LOL...Yeah, okay......
Â
LockesChild  = Another one in whom the ignorance is strong...
Â
Â
@KOMO_Sapiens Obama created this problem ,why are you blaming someone not even elected ?Â
@Maynard G Krebbs @KOMO_Sapiens  The "problem" of poverty and homelessness goes back long before Obama was even born.Â
Â
Research will set you free... :-)
@Maynard G Krebbs Obama may have created the problem of a homeless community in Arlington, but Romney will spread the problem.Â
Komo-sapiens, you have got to be kidding! Thanks for proving your ignorance today.
Â
@KOMO_Sapiens Have a direct line to the Crazy, do you?
Â
You haven't heard yet but I have it on good authority that Romney sold his sould to the devil and will help the devil steal everyone's soul. All of his many successes are because of this unholy help. Also, Romney doesn't separate out the plastic covered cardboard from the rest when recycling--which proves he is in league with the devil.
Â
Trust me, all of that is true. Really.
@LockesChild We'll see how funny you think it is when a meth head steals your dog for dinner. Do you think your Mitt Romney bumper sticker will save your dog from being eaten?
You really need to follow the directons on your medication bottle. It says that you need to take your medication DAILY.
@LockesChild I'm no big Romney fan, but that's just too damn funny.
@KOMO_Sapiens more factless based rhetoric..keep trying.
@Unsalvageable We'll chalk you up as being in favor of sending American jobs overseas. Keep trying.
this is just more evidence of the culture of fear that is becoming america. stand up for yourselves cowards...
@Theonedog Good idea! I'm going to make sure that my 11 year old goes out with the 12 guage so they can protect themselves if any of the squatters try and attack them...
Hey theo, how about you head up to Arlington and show them how it's done, big guy! Apparently, you've never encountered the survivalist mentality, but often, homeless people, especially those who are drug addicted, will set traps around their confines, would just as soon shank you as look at you, and are not afraid to break into your home at will. The residents have every right to question the response of law enforcement to this problem.
Guess their running out of room up and down I-5, didn't realize theres a homeless shortage of open space in Washington state....
@Windowseat Remember the housing boom from the mid part of the last decade? Homes were scarce and property values skyrocketed. Well homeless plots are getting scarce too so properties are also skyrocketing. Many homeless people are now picking up second plots as vacation estates.Â
For a good homeless property, 7 year ARMs are becoming attractive financing methods.
New masterplanned homeless communities are springing up with HLA's (homeless associations) and all of the ammenities; heck I have even heard of a retirement community near Redmond Ridge for homeless seniors. I just hope the developers of these homeless communities learned from past mistakes of the mid 2000's. Gone are the days of bums simply setting up shop on sidewalks in downtown Seattle
Not as big a problem as the whiners make it out to be. We have them over here in Bremerton. For the most part they just want to be left alone. They come by and use the garden hose to clean up and use my dumpster to dump some of their garbage. I leave cans of food out for them sometimes. The state and feds just need to open up some of this land thats being used for nothing and allow people to homestead. People hhave a right have a place to live. Help them a little and they are less of a problem, but everyone seems to want to attack poor people any more.
@Blindman we actually haven't whined about it at all. It was the news that made it a big deal.Â
@Blindman by your own admission, you are part of the problem. Just like a ferral cat, if you keep putting food out for it, the cat will keep coming back, same with the houseless. It has no reason to move on.Â
So you consider poor people feral cats? Very christian of you. @BobDobbs  @Blindman
We live in GlenEagle near a childrens park Two of the kids took there little cousins there to spend some time and there was a guy living back there in the woods with his bike. This was during the yard sales. Scared the tar out of them .Called Arlington they came out said he was homless and use to live here ran into bad times. Sorry we have ran into bad times also but a childrens park is not the place to camp out in.Now we wil not allow the children over there Sad
"Police say they are doing all they can,"
Â
If the druggies/crazies are still in the woods the police haven't done enough.Â
This is s trend seen in MANY communities.
This neighborhood DOES have something to worry about, as most homeless that are at the "camping in the woods" stage like this are substance abusing criminals. They can't/won't follow the basic rules of most homeless shelters, jobs programs, etc.
The other group you see doing this are the registered sex offenders. Housing can very very hard for them to find, so they "register" as homeless and report in once a week(supposes to !)Â to the local cops and tell the cops where they've been sleeping at night.
Â
Instead of focusing on trying to get rid of the homeless, it might be more efficient to try to help them find solutions to their problems, and set up legal, monitored tent city for those who cannot or will not be helped.
@Waif YA! Like some sort of concentration camp! Good idea.Â
I live right across the street from this house in this video. I can personally tell you nobody is over-reacting to this. I have been in that house right after it was descovered, and it was VERY disturbing. My kids, niece, nephew, and all other kids should not have to be affraid to play in front of their house but when they hear the neighbors talking about it and are told they CAN'T play oustide without an adult right there with them, it's not fair they can't be kids like I was able to at their age.
@Meghan Villareal thank you Meghan! I live 2 houses up and we haven't overreacted either! Yes, we started keeping our porch lights on at night, but that's it. I think this is a case where the media is making a bigger deal out of it then we are. People need to remember that the news in bias and sensationalized.Â
Homeless people =Â thieves, murderers, thugs, druggies. Â No doubt a certain percentage of them are. How many people snug in their homes with plenty of food are thieves, murderers, thugs, druggies? Â I don't know if my neighbor has guns, knives, a meth lab or what over there. But you can bet the instant people are on the street, jobless, mentally ill, hungry they might get a little desperate, they might be real scared. After all, they don't know what you might be planning for them.
Â
Assumptions are ugly, especially assumptions about people who have reached the end of their rope. Yeah, heaven forbid we try to help them, let's get rid of them instead.Â
Â
I don't know about anyone else, but I am so damn lucky to have a roof over my head, heat, a bathroom, groceries. That could be me out there next year. If so, it won't make me a criminal. It'll just make me scared.
@fyrefawx Thank you! You don't have to do a whole lot of research to discover that most Americans are living from paycheck to paycheck or what's even scarier is the very real fact that for many it's actually from unemployment check to unemployment check. Some of the remarks I read above were just outrageous and clearly show that they have never found themselves trapped between a rock and a hard place with nobody to turn to for help and no idea what to do next...??
Â
I'm very lucky to have some of the most amazing landlords in the world because that could very well be me if it wasn't for their compassion and understanding. I've been a Union Ironworker for 33 years now and moved to Las Vegas when the work was booming and it was called the fastest growing city in America - but in 2009 it went from "BOOMTOWN" to "GHOST TOWN" almost overnight!! For quite a while, you COULD NOT RENT a U-Haul van one way out of town here at all... There are entire neighborhoods here that are completely unoccupied that now are stripped of the copper and appliances and can't be sold at all...
Â
I was one of the people living off my unemployment and what my wife made as a technician at a pharmacy. Luckily I'm back to work now but I can't be sure for how long and that, to me, is VERY SCARY! Before 2009, the only time I was off work was when I chose to be between construction projects and thought that would NEVER happen to me because my phone used to ring off the hook with job offers.Â
Â
And I can say without a doubt that a whole lot more of Americans than we care to admit are "DRUGGIES" - just because a person has a prescription for a medicine doesn't mean that they use it responsibly, don't abuse it or even take it themselves at all... Like I said, my wife works in a pharmacy and has assisted law enforcement arrest obvious known abusers of the system and some of the people who she deals with regularly that have a real problem - you would never expect to be "Rx DRUGGIES"!!
Â
Judge not lest ye be judged... Didn't someone write that somewhere...??
@fyrefawx We see a few homeless folks up here in the sticks too, but for us, it seems like they're mostly teens and young adults. I see one often that is probably 17-20 yrs old, carries his belongings in a Rubbermaid garbage can, and walks around with an old hound dog. Pretty sure he's couch surfing and camping. There are some very marginal places being called houses around here too - lots of camper trailers with tarps over them and whatnot. Many of the people living in these are elderly, or have crammed several generations into them. I do realize there is a percentage of homeless that are substance abusers and are scary, but like you say, that could be me if a few paychecks were missed. The ones in this article seem a bit more scary - the mention of disturbing dolls and legal books made me picture the Manson Family immediately.
I'm pretty sure nobody is making assumptions about whether or not these certain homeless people are druggies when they find drug paraphenalia where they are camped out...
Try living in a city with homeless people all over. And talking about living in constant fear of them is very 1942.Â
