LACEY, Wash. -- A SWAT team ended an hours-long standoff Friday night when they stormed into the home of a JBLM soldier and rescued the 10-month-old baby he was holding hostage.

The standoff started Friday afternoon when deputies responded to a domestic violence call in the 7000 block of 9th Ave. SE, just east of Lacey.

When Thurston County deputies arrived they found a woman who had been assaulted by her live-in boyfriend, a 38-year-old major stationed at Joint Base Lewis McChord. When deputies tried to contact the man, he answered the door with a gun.

Deputies retreated and the man went back inside with the couple's 10-month-old baby boy.

Hostage negotiators and a SWAT team used bullhorns in an attempt to talk the man out of the house, but he remained silent for hours.

The SWAT team tossed a video surveillance device into a window and were able to monitor the man as he moved around the house. When he walked away from the baby and appeared to be unarmed, the SWAT team rushed into the house and subdued the man.

The man was transported to a local hospital to be treated for unknown injuries. It's unclear how the man was hurt, but the baby was not injured and is now safe.

The man's girlfriend suffered minor injuries in the assault.
