HILLSBORO, Ore. – An autopsy Wednesday confirmed that four family members pulled from Henry Hagg Lake this week died of accidental drowning.
It appears none of them knew how to swim.
Jeremy Scholl, 3, was found unconscious and not breathing in the water Monday evening. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The bodies of his mother, 25-year-old Gabriela Garcia-Ixtacua, grandmother, 42-year-old Jova Ixtacua-Castano, and uncle, 13-year-old Michael Garcia-Ixtacua, were pulled from the water the next day.
On Wednesday, a sister could barely put words together to speak about the tragedy, but she did share pictures of her loved ones with KATU News. The photos were of mother Gabriela with her little boy. Another photo showed 13-year-old, Michael, with his nephew, and grandmother, Jova Ixtacua-Castano was seen smiling in another photo with her grandson while they were at a pumpkin patch.
The family’s church in Hillsboro is setting up memorial services for the mother, grandmother and two children. The family is getting a lot of comfort from their church. All four of the victims lived in the same home, and the family was close.
The pastor at St. Matthew Catholic Church met with the family Wednesday to start planning the memorial services. Father Hugo said he was with the family when they got the news and will be with them every moment in support.
The medical examiner said there was no sign of any crime or other injury.
A memorial fund has been set up to help the family. If you are interested in helping out, you can make a donation at any Wells Fargo Bank under the Garcia Memorial Fund.
