BELLEVUE, Wash. -- A 48-year-old Bellevue woman died Thursday evening after being run over by a King County Metro bus.

Police say the woman had just gotten off the bus at NE 10th St. and Northup Way at 6:30 p.m. when the driver heard what he described as a "thump." The driver immediately stopped and called 911.

"The bus starts to drive away and he hears a thump, stops and gets off the bus looks back and sees a female on the pavement," said Officer Carla Iafrate of the Bellevue Police Department

Paramedics attempted CPR at the scene but the woman was pronounced dead a short time later.

Iafrate said the woman was a regular on the bus and knew the driver. She was one of just four passengers on the bus at the time.

Northup Way from 173rd NE to NE 9th was temporarily blocked to traffic while police and Washington State Patrol troopers investigated the incident.

The bus driver was tested for impairment, but police have not said that alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

This was the second time a woman was hit by a Metro bus on Thursday.

A bus also hit a 51-year-old woman at 8:30 a.m. as she crossed 3rd Ave. near Pine in Seattle.

That woman suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Traffic Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the collision.
