Bicyclist hurt after being struck by car in Pioneer Square
A bicyclist was hospitalized with a severe cut to his head and possibly broken bones after being hit by a car early Monday in Pioneer Square, according to the Seattle Police Department.
The cyclist was riding westbound on James Street shortly after 2 a.m. when a Toyota Camry heading southbound on Second Avenue hit him in the intersection, according to police.
The Toyota didn’t stop, but witnesses were able to give officers a description and license plate number, according to police.
Officers caught up to the car at its registered address in the 2200 block of South Main Street just as three men were getting out. According to police, the car had some front-end damage and a smashed windshield.
The 27-year-old man who had been driving the car appeared to be intoxicated and was booked into King County Jail, according to police.
Meanwhile, the bicyclist was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Wow, the views expressed are disturbing. I personally know who I would side with when it's car versus cyclist based on my daily walk into work. Private vehicles are a real hazard in downtown. I watched a furniture delivery truck going the wrong way on a one way street Monday; it took another motorist honking and the oncoming wave of traffic to convince him to change course. I wish we could restrict downtown to pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit. Taxis and business vehicles would have registration to operate. Please make downtown pedestrian friendly! Why do we live with higher gas prices, congested roads, and horrible  emissions and then are still spoiled in thinking we own the roads in downtown where pedestrians should be THE dominant mode. We need to sacrifice there too and give downtown back to pedestrians. I say this with so much dread, but letting cars own downtown WILL lead to the kind of downtown that is Los Angeles. And that is unacceptable. Los Angeles is a city where you worship your car, no understatement.
@pastrami Everyone can ride a bike everywhere downtown. I am sure many seniors and others that can not ride up and down Seattle hills will not appreciate a no car downtown. As far as public transit, everyone does not live where it is practical to take transit everywhere. I am sure not many people living in areas like Bellevue will take a bus to downtown for dinner or a event.
 @pastrami very well stated
Â
it's frightening how they come in here and vilify bicyclists before even knowing what happened.
Â
Since the vast majority use cars to get to anywhere other than the fridge, it comes as little surprise.
Though the driver was intoxicated, since I travel to South Lake Union for work, I always find bikers riding like they have a freakin death wish. I was attempting to turn right onto a street and the biker on my right did not bother to stop despite me having my turn light blinking and decided he wanted to simply pass on my right. I stopped in the nick of time otherwise he would have hit the side of my car.
Â
Are bikers allowed to pass or do they have to follow traffic rules just like anyone else?
 @NickM1979 get over it.
Â
there are many infinitely many more bad drivers than bad bicyclists. Â
Â
but focus on that dangerous 29 lb bicyclist vs the drunken driver hereÂ
Â
And here in this story the driver was drunk and fled. Â
Â
Maybe you should talk to that idiot!!
Who had the right of way ? There is a light . I bet it was the bicyclist who decided it was alright to just go through the light. Â Not to say the impaired driver should have been driving or should had fled.In the drivers impaired state he may just thought stupid bicyclist got what he deserved.
please state where you are getting your information about this....
Â
different web site etc.... to back up your point would be appreciated.
 @sunnysandiego Citation of a source isnt required to ask a question or offer their opinion
 @DarkRenegade I will bet you the fact the driver was impaired played a major roll in this accident.  Also, I will bet you either way (whether the bicyclist ran the light or not) the driver will be ticketed for dui which lead to this accident due to decreased abilities to react to outside stimuli.
Sooo you just thought you would go home like nothing happened?? Like no one ELSE would notice all that damage either? Nice.
The police should just set up checkpoints on Yesler and check all the young men heading back and forth between Pioneer Square and the Central District. Clean up the city. Wonder why there seem to be so many more problems in Pioneer Square on weekends than in another popular drinking area, the Pike/Pine Capitol Hill area...Â
 @lakeview Drunk drivers are all over the city, It is a systemic problem not one relegated to one area of the city. There are only one or two spots open on a Sunday night in P.Sq.. In regards to Capitol Hill, they have your typical nightlife problems but since there is so little parking around those spots perhaps that is why there *seem* to be fewer drunk driving incidents?
glad he wasn't high on weed or we'd be hearing it in here for sure.
Â
the number of people hurt, maimed or killed by alcohol is a very real issue and happens every day.
Â
the dude stoned who hit the ped walking INTO traffic caused an uproar here.
Â
This is what we refer to as the hypocrisy of alcohol vs weed.
Â
Where's the outrage here.
 @sunnysandiego People get struck by lightning too.  Oh the humanity...
 @31F Lightning is an act of nature while driving drunk is a choice by humans
We should ban bikes and cars.
Â
Driver was stoned and the biker was heading to a gay wedding.
Â
Now that we have pot, we should ban booze. People don't drink and drive, beer does!!!!!
Go Hawks
Nothing like celebrating a Seahawks win by getting completely s*^t faced...
so when will all the outrage come about drunk drivers? i guess everyone would rather yell and moan about guns.
 @beetle73 NTSB wants to include ignition locking systems to prevent drunk driving but the public complains about them. Its all the public knows how to do instead of offering clear, constructive solutions to problems like this.
 @DarkRenegade  @beetle73 How about personal responsibility  ? Stop looking to government to solve all your wishes. Look to the judiciary to start putting people in jail for the crimes THEY commit. . or just go back to the horse and buggy days and become a cave dweller.
 @Maynard G Krebbs If the suspected driver had personal responsibility then they wouldnt have driven home drunk or even taken a drink in the first place.
You say stop looking for government to solve things but next sentence you want judicial involvement. Is that not part of the government? The judicial side of the government is part of the problem with letting people back on the roads with fines or slaps on the wrists instead of stricter punishment.
 @beetle73 Don't worry, I want to yell about both.Â
