Body found inside burning pickup in Central Wash.

ROCK ISLAND, Wash. - A charred body was found inside a pickup that burned during a garage fire Friday morning in the Douglas County town of Rock Island, southeast of Wenatchee, officials said.

Fire crews and a sheriff's deputy responded to the scene, in the 10 block of North Garden in Rock Island, at about 9:30 a.m. and found the detached garage of the home engulfed in flames, said Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal.

As firefighters battled the blaze, the deputy ran to the nearby house, about 20 feet from the garage, to see if anyone was inside, but the home was empty.

After the garage fire was mostly extinguished, firefighters spotted a small pickup parked inside. A tow truck arrived and was able to pull the pickup out of the garage, which was still smoldering and beginning to collapse. A body was found inside the pickup.

The case is now being investigated by a fire official and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire was very intense, and at this time the identity of the person found in the pickup is unknown. An autopsy will be performed, Gjesdal said.
