Boy killed in crash that sent pickup off freeway into Columbia Gorge
HOOD RIVER, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say divers have recovered a boy's body from a pickup that slid on icy Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge, crashed through a guardrail and plunged into the Columbia River.
Lt. Gregg Hastings says the 40-year-old man driving the pickup was able to escape and swim to shore Monday afternoon but wasn't able to save his son. The father was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Skamania County, Wash., sheriff's divers found the pickup and the boy's body about 9:30 p.m. Monday in about 40 feet of water.
Hastings said the names of the father and son would be released Tuesday.
The right hand westbound lane of the freeway was blocked for several hours east of Hood River.

I can't imagine the grief one would have at not being able to save their child. I hope his whole family can help the father get through this tragedy.
I don't know what I would do if I was unable to save my child. May the father find strength to get through this.
Such a tragic way to end the year. It seems that too many children have died this year, may they all be playing in fields of green and gold under rainbows and knowing nothing but peace and love.
