Bremerton man throws mattress on fire out window
BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) - A former volunteer firefighter had to act quickly when a mattress caught fire inside his Bremerton apartment.
So he threw the queen-size mattress out a window.
Bremerton Fire Department acting battalion chief John Payne says children had turned on the heater that was near the mattress, despite being told not to by their parents Saturday afternoon.
Payne says smoke alarms went off and the father, who said he was a former volunteer firefighter, threw the queen-sized mattress out the window of their second-floor apartment unit.
The Kitsap Sun reports that the mattress was no longer on fire by the time firefighters arrived.

Here's a thought. Â If the heater was not placed near the mattress, there would have been no need to tell the children not to turn it on.Â
With all the rain today didn't need the fire hoses.
Quick thinking on his part and if he did it without getting burned, bonus points!
Smart thinking- depending on the type of the mattress some can be very hard to put out. I remember seeing something once about a memory foam mattress just slowly burning till it was gone, they couldn't put the fire out.Â

@MomOf2 A memory foam mattress would certainly be very hard to put out of a window. Those suckers are heavy!
Hopefully it fell further than the balcony below. LOL
