Cameras roll as Christmas gift stolen from security expert's porch

PUYALLUP, Wash. - 'Tis the season for gift giving - but as we're seeing all too often, it's also the season for stealing.
It happened again to a family in Puyallup, when a holiday package was snatched from their porch. But this time, they got a big break - they caught two thieves on camera.
It turns out that the owner of the home is a security expert. The house is surrounded by cameras that show how the criminals scoped out the neighborhood, spotted the package, grabbed it - and got away - all in under two minutes.
Amanda and Jules Mayer weren't expecting the delivery - a personalized custom Seahawks jersey ordered for their Uncle "Gub" - for a few more days.
But as luck would have it, Uncle Gub's gift was delivered early, on Friday - while the Mayers were out.
"I was like, 'Sweet, we're going to have it in time for the holiday,'" says Amanda.
But when they got home, there was no package. Jules checked his security cameras, which showed that the deliveryman had dropped off the package on the porch next to the doormat.
Then it was stolen.
"They prey on consistency - people's schedules - they do the same thing, day in, day out," says Jules. "Total violation for somebody to come up into your space and just steal from you."
Jules said he couldn't believe his eyes when he viewed more footage from his security cameras. It clearly shows the thieves in action.
"Goes down the street just behind my house to my neighbor's house, turns around in their driveway," says Jules. At that point the thieves have spotted the package.
"Oh yes, most definitely, been by it once, twice, three times - they've seen that front porch now," he says as he rolls the video.
The thieves are fast and brazen.
"They come in just like they lived there," says Jules.
"Somebody pulled right up into my driveway, got out of the car, just walked up here to my front door - like right at my front door - and took a package," adds Amanda.
Says Jules, "Total time, from when they enter the cul-de-sac to when they're leaving is about a minute 40."
And the Mayers aren't the only victims.
"We just found out today that our neighbors had two packages stolen from them on Wednesday," he says.
They hope this security footage will help nab the crooks. It shows them pulling up in a late '80s or early '90s sedan, very dark in color.
"The male who approached the door and took the package was probably in his early 30s, late 20s maybe - heavy-set, white painter pants, fleece pullover," says Jules.
The Mayers are grateful they weren't home when it happened.
"It's complete helplessness because you can watch it, but that means you weren't there - you can't do anything about it," he says. "Nobody's safe - even the people who put in security are sometimes robbed."
But the Mayers say the joke is on the thief.
"Somebody's walking around out there with a giant Seahawks jersey with the nickname 'Gub' on the back," says Amanda.
"It's a 4XL," says Jules. "Nobody's going to be able to wear that."
The Mayers also got some good news - the company they ordered the jersey from plans to send them a new one.
Now Jules says he plans to put up signs around his property to make it clear he has security cameras monitoring the home at all times - he believes that will be the best way to ward off thieves.

@SensationaLies That's what you got out of this article? Man, looks like the Christmas spirit passed you over. Bah Humbug!
We had packages stolen in Puyallup on Tuesday. My husband pulled into our garage, saw a GRAY 80's sedan pull up behind him as he was closing the garage door, and as he was going from the house to the front door saw a man fitting this same description stealing 3 packages from our front porch!! They were behind a large pillar and not viewable from the road. He did it after seeing my husband arrive HOME!! Very very brazen. I showed my husband this video and he totally freaked out saying that was him.Â
Â
I wonder if they can catch him!!
Security expert? He is no expert or he would know to have a camera looking towards to front porch. Ok anyone using that guy for security fire him right away and hire someone that is a real expert.
@nwtrdr Now that's funny right there.
@slappywag Best avatar on this site, slappywag!Â
If that security camera was installed by an "expert" I'd hate to see the poor quality video an amateur installer could get.
@November_Delta I would like to see you install something better without it being choppy and in HD quality.Â
So James now has the jersey for sale on Craig's List in "Everett". Â I bet he would be willing to meet you in Puyallp and cut you a deal. Â Go get em' security expert.
@Super Mom Impossible to say if it's the correct one. Not enough evidence.
Wake up, people. It's not the same U.S.A. anymore. Welcome to the 3rd World Country. Thanks to the economy and the illegals from southern border.Â
@mastur de bator Yeah, we sure have gone downhill since those witch trials and slavery...
@mastur de bator With your bizarre Random capitalization in mid-Sentence, missing punctuation, incomplete sentences and poor grammar, you read like someone very new to the English language.
Perhaps you should reconsider sniveling and whining about "illegals" until you can learn to write like you're more educated than one.Â

@The End is Near! That, coming from someone who likes to view other people's comment history, call them "bum" and say they have no life. You've done that twice in a row now, havent even been on this forum a week yet. I would say the guy that repeats himself over and over has no life.
@northwestsurfer I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same guy. The End and Mastur de bator. Obviously someone is living in their parents' basement.
@mastur de bator Im not sure which is dumber; your screename, or your comment. Neither is clever.
A close neighbor got hit last week and I can't help feeling like they wondered if I did it. It's just a bad thing all around. I wonder if the thieves sometimes follow the trucks and call in a partner. The one near me was a white envelope and probably not easy to see unless up close, or had knowledge of the delivery. I have deliveries coming too, and apparently the thieves are thick in my area.
Everybody remember to leave your fake package on the porch for the grinch next year. Maybe they will lose interest after taking home some nicely wrapped dog droppings. I might stack a whole pile of packages on the porch just to cast a larger net.
@Elvis I like the idea of fake packages. I wonder if it's possible to buy those dye packages they put in with the money before handing it over to a bank robber? If so a few boxes full of those would go a long way towards identifying the perps. Just set them up so that are rigged to explode when you open the box; then tell the cops to arrest anyone whose face and hands are stained.
@Elvis Just curious, not trying to challenge you here: what makes you think they would suspect you?Â
Hopefully all of your stuff arrives safely, and excellent suggestion about the gift-wrapped turds. :^D
@MargeGunderson Have you EVER been stolen from? Everybody becomes a suspect. The fact that I am a single male living alone without a whole of of visitors makes it easier for people to imagine a lot of things.
I see a lot of people talking smack about UPS. This isn't their fault. People need to pay for insurance or signature on delivery. That would help a lot. Otherwise there isn't much else you can do because thieves are everywhere and always watching for a free meal.
@cm257n7 UPS states that their policy is to just leave stuff if it's a "reasonably safe" neighborhood. They don't even wait for an answer at the door, just tap once, drop the package and run.Â
Â
Our neighborhood is comparatively safe, but it's a huge shopping area with apartments upstairs and retail-type businesses downstairs, so a hundred people could walk past our ground floor entrance who may or may not live anywhere near this area.Â
Â
If UPS is the only shipping option available and one of us won't be home during the expected arrival date(s) we just don't order from that company.
With USPS, Â if a package is too large for the individual boxes we'll find a key in our box to one of the larger community boxes alongside the personal ones, so our stuff is safe even when we get home from work late.Â
Â
Most of the FedEx drivers around here are too stupid and incompetent to even figure out when to use their turn signals; you couldn't pay me enough to have anything sent through them whether we'll be home or not.Â
@cm257n7 I have signature on delivery on file with FedEx and UPS and guess what, the carriers can still leave the package at the door. They can also lie and say that someone signed for it but no one actually did. That happened to us twice last year. FedEx and UPS also have insurance up to 100 included in the shipping fee. If the cost of the item is more, then ya you gotta pay but it's a 4XL jersey doubt it was more than a $100.Â
Â
My source: I worked for FedEx and UPS for many years. I know how they operate. Do you?
Must be a slow news day. Three minutes of air time for a stolen Seahawks jersey? C'mon KOMO, what happened to your REAL news stories?
@ferryguy Everyday is a slow news day at KOMO.
@ferryguy they never have real news stories
This is nowhere near as tragic as stolen items, but I currently have three packages sitting at UPS in Redmond...where they've been for five days. I'm not sure if they're so backed up that they can't get them sent out - in a work week(!), but these were well within Amazon's 'Get it by Christmas' time-frame' so there'll be plenty of frayed nerves when my sister's presents don't arrive on time. That and stolen packages makes me think entering a physical store won't be so traumatic after all.Â
@windtreeman Yeah, I saw that nice little "order by this date and be assured of arrival before Christmas!" only to have the confirmation e-mail two seconds later inform me that the estimated arrival date would be "Dec 14 to Jan 2." Â
Â
Fortunately, those all arrived very quickly; it was the ones who promised Dec. 15 on their confirmation e-mail that got here Dec. 19. Yes, very much in time, but I get your point about the stress of waiting for stuff, especially if it's being delivered to your porch when you aren't home.Â
Â
If you or a buddy are able to get out there, they might let you just pick it up yourself? I know you shouldn't have to, but it might relieve some of your stress.Â
Â
Good luck and I hope all your stuff gets where it should and in time!Â
UPS not once but twice delivered hundreds of dollars in "equipment" to the correct house number on "the wrong street"....No more UPS for me or family and friend's....I was on it like stink on s#%$ and ran to the next street and found all my belonging's on a stranger's porch.
@F4I We had the opposite experience - they refused to deliver to a high rise in Seattle, the only building with housing on that block, because the address wasn't just right.  It got sent back - twice!  Not impressed.
@Doxie If it's a new building, it could be that the address was not in the computer yet. Happens a lot more than you think. FedEx and UPS are pretty bad for not updating their gps maps.Â
 @PrairieDawn Nope, it's been there since 2000!  It's right on 1st Ave!
My daughter had two packages delivered by UPS (according to UPS records) at 10:30 am. At 1:20pm she had 1 package delivered by FedEx. When she got home, the FedEx package was there, but the two UPS packages were not. (no security cameras, unfortunately). One Merchant (Nordstrom) immediately shipped her a replacement at no charge, with signature required.
The other Merchant told her to make a claim on her Homeowner's insurance! Â When we suggested to the second merchant that they ship with signature required, they said they had no control over that. (which isn't true).
Â
The first merchant will now get lots of repeat business. The second merchant will get no business from friends or family.
Â
@Gnirk The second merchant likely has a deal with UPS or FedEx where they get the cheapest shipping possible. In return that means they can't put a change of address (COA) on a package, ask for signature confirmation etc. AT&T has a contract with FedEx that is similar to what I mentioned. So it could very well be true that they can't do signature confirmation. You may call BS but you don't know how their operations department works.Â
Everybody in the area needs to put out some kind of crap gag gift on their porch wrapped like it was shipped. Maybe a dye pack would help. If there was saturation of some kind of surprise, and not a happy one, this activity would stop immediately. I'm not saying to set dangerous traps as much as it IS a temptation, just something to make them reconsider the value of time spent in that manner.
 @Elvis A poop bomb!  That'll learn 'em!  I wish.........
@Doxie Well, you know, that's how new traditions get started! Next year, everybody remember to get your poop bombs ready to leave out for the grinch. You will want to disguise them well and be very careful you don't set it off prematurely. That's just part of the fun, though.
Also, the milk and cookies that you leave for THEM might have to be just a bit sour.
@Elvis I agree - something to look forward to for Christmas 2013!
I wonder how long it will idiotic judges to rule that video surveillance is a violation of a thieves privacy. Â
@blaster You have been reading KomoNews too long and can't form a complete sentence.
Need cameras that point up and down the street so you get the license numbers.
@Chico That would be far more constructive than warning thieves to security cameras,
catch them in the act and have the evidence to show the police and jury when they dare challenge it in court. Put these bast*ards away in the clink and make them pay restitution.
I collect old transistor radios on ebay and I spotted a women taking a package off my front porch
while I was getting out of the shower. The downstairs window has that textured bubble glass but I could make out a figure bending over and swiping my package, I chased her down the alley barefoot in my bathrobe and I caught up with her as she was getting in her car. She said a friend asked her to pick up the package for her..yeah right..just sorry I didn't have my cell phone to turn her in. She probably would of taken one look at my valuable (to collectors) old transistor radio and thrown it in the garbage. More people need to start filming these thieves in the act and there needs to be stiffer penalties too.
@joefuss OK, now you've got Van Morrison's song Brown Eyed Girl stuck in my head. :^DÂ
What a cool idea for a collection, though, and even more so if you know how to tinker and get them working again!Â
I hope they nab these pukes.

@Super Mom It doesn't have the personalized "Gub" on the back so that's probably not it.  I hope it's not, actually.
@Super Mom Why is Everett in quotes?
@UnderAbridge  @Super It is in quotes because it makes him look like he is far from the crime.  The post has a very uneducated feel to it.  Look at all the spelling mistakes.  Anybody who orders a Seahawks jersey is probably paying good money and may have somewhat of an education.  What are they $70 - I don't know.  Give him a call and quiz him about the jersey.  Bet he can even speak correct English.  Wuuz up!
@Super Mom  @UnderAbridge  @Super Jerseys of current players run about $100 retail now (sadly, far out of my budget these days). Â
Â
If you want to see delusional, uneducated, ludicrous posts, just search Seahawks on craigslist â I haven't found the Gub one yet, but someone is actually trying to unload a Terrell Owens jersey for $175, calling it rare.Â
Â
I guess Einstein here didn't think that sounded quite moronic enough because (s)he capitalizes words like Hoody, Minute, Once, How, etc., spells worse than a kindergartener, is apparently allergic to punctuation (except for apostrophe's in plural word's) and can't string together a complete sentence.Â
Â
Not surprisingly, this genius who actually paid for an Owens jersey while he was still unsuccessfully auditioning for the team recommends that "Texting me is the fastest way to get ahold of Me"
 @Super Mom  @UnderAbridge  @Super Everett is in
(Parentheses) not "Quotations"Â when you post on Craigslist it automatically puts your location in (Parentheses)
@UnderAbridge I think because it's a lame excuse by the criminals to dissuade people connecting that jersey with the one stolen from Puyallup. They think saying it'll be sold out of Everett will automatically mean they can't possibly be the thieves.Â
@Super Mom http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cld/3494458774.html
Â
mmm. makes you wonder how stupid they are...if its them
@Yica  @Super Has anyone contacted the police to report it?
Â
@Yica  @Super I really hope the police look into this. Nothing a quick phone call can't clear up if he's not the perpetrator.Â
@Yica Yeah but it says its a Wilson jersey. Someone should definitely check it out though and see if that's the one! They posted that it is in Everett but it has a 253 number.
@Tattooed_Angel  @Yica A lot of cell phones have 253 area codes. I live in a 360 area code and about 1/3 of the people in my cell directory have 253 area codes and I know they live in 360 areas.
