Overturned cement truck clogs traffic on Aurora Ave. North
SEATTLE -- Traffic on Aurora Ave. North was blocked for hours Friday afternoon after a cement truck overturned and hit three other vehicles, officials said.
The driver of the cement truck, a man in his 30s, suffered serious injuries when it overturned and landed on its side. The driver of a pickup truck that was hit sustained lesser injuries.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene, the southbound lanes of Aurora Avenue North and North 72nd Street, just after 2 p.m., said Kyle Moore of the Seattle Fire Department.
When medics arrived, they found that the cement truck driver had managed to escape from his rig, but he had suffered some serious injuries in the accident. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in serious but stable condition, Moore said.
Medics also treated a man in his 40s with lesser injuries who was inside a pickup truck hit by the cement truck. He also was taken to Harborview as a precaution.
Occupants of another pickup truck and passenger car hit in the crash were not hurt, said Jonah Spangenthal-Lee of the Seattle Police Department.
Fuel and hydraulic spilled from the cement truck after the crash, but crews were able to contain it before it leaked into storm drains.
All southbound lanes of Aurora Avenue North were blocked at the accident scene, along with two northbound lanes. Crews were able to clear the scene and reopen the road after 6 p.m.

Hope the drive is OK now... Â Could have been anything that caused this accident. Â We'll probably never know however because KOMO isn't great at the follow-up on stuff like this.Â
Oh my, what SNIDE remarks i see concerning the driver of the CONCRETE mixer truck. Gray fox and T Bone Walker! I wonder if you could do it any better? Are you somehow a more superior driver than the rest of us? Or is your best talent mouthing off at other people's misfortune? Who am i, you ask? Well, let me clue you in, Sonny! I am a TRUCKER with almost THIRTY years in the biz and have had ZERO accidents. Oh, people have tried mightily to get in my way by cutting me off or pulling out in front or some other bone-head stunt! It is a well known fact that in traffic accidents involving large trucks and passenger cars, said accident was caused by the car about 75% of those cases. Remember, if you bought it, a TRUCK brought it. Without truckers and trucks, the economic system grinds to a halt. Also, we as truckers are your FATHERS, BROTHERS, MOTHERS, SISTERS, SONS and DAUGHTERS.My advice to you, if you could be so humble, is to engage your BRAIN before running your MOUTH!
Go too fast through those "S" curves on Aurora, & you pay the price...
Why the hell does Seattle DOT have concrete trucks? Isn't ready mix concrete quickly available when it is needed? Does this truck go to a local plant to get concrete? Does it run full time? I thought the city was having financial problems? Why do they buy equipment that is not used all the time and is readily available commercially? Does the driver have any experience driving extremely top heavy liquid trucks? Why are they taking jobs away from the public? I can understand using city workers for things not readily available but does the Seattle DOT have that many workers that they can have them doing stuff readily available, and at a lower cost, commercially? As a tax payer, I got to say this sort of waste really pi$$e$ me off and is an example why I want less government.
Â
Hey KOMO, how about some investigative reporting?
Surprise, another wreckless truck driver. Â
At least it wasn't a Sani-Can truck.
Yep KOMO, that looks like a "cement" truck all right. NOT! Try looking up concrete versus cement and you'll find that cement is a component of portland cement concrete or concrete for short.
Â
The truck type is "concrete mixer", or "concrete mixer truck".
@Chico who actually calls it that? really?
 @DylanJ  @Chico I do.
Ooooopseeee!!! Looks like sombody was not paying attention to their driving again!!! **facepalm** Nobody is immune to the mistakes others make on the road. Wonder what the root cause was?
@TreeTopFlyer My guess is that its a non union driver with no experience driving top heavy trucks.
@T_BONE_WALKER  @TreeTopFlyer A non union SDOT driver? Don't think so.
@chuckh0308 @TreeTopFlyer Oh, thank you that clears that up. Must have been a laborer driving.
@T_BONE_WALKER  @TreeTopFlyer yeah, if it was union driver he would have been on his coffee break instead of driving.
@beetle73 @TreeTopFlyer I doubt that but, whatever the union driver was doing it was clearly more productive then this non-union guy. Just ask the owner of the truck and the peole that survived.
Bumper sticker on the truck:
"We dry harder".
 :-DÂ
Which company is that?
 @T_BONE_WALKER City owned. Why I don't know.
Dang it it takes some work to flip a concrete truck...
so are they clear now?
I'm going to guess he was cut off and ran into the jersey barrier.
@HonkeyCat There's a bit of a curve on that road. The driver was probably going too fast and couldn't respond in time... or he was just staring at women running in tights on Green Lake.
That's a concrete truck Komo...not a cement truck.
Â
Interesting. The truck appears to be going north, maybe to the vicinity of the 85th repaving project which is pouring sidewalk cement right now. It's also just a bit beyond the pedestrian crossing to greenlake and around that bend in the road that may be a surprise to a distracted driver.
Â
I'm not sure I endorse this method of pothole filling.
@Joe Maybe he "should have" had his accident at 85th & dumped his load - could've helped the repaving project along.....  :-)  VERY glad everyone is going to be OK, prayers for the driver, that his recovery is short rather than long.
I was wondering what was going on! Was trying to come across Aurora from Green Lake and it was a cluster......
Â
It was during a pretty heavy traffic time, so I can't imagine that speed was a factor, but someone might not have been paying attention or something.
@chuckh0308 Anymore, it's always a cluster..... from about north  Green Lake to about 105th at least.....
I wonder how it happened?
Boy...people driving so fast and crazy, they're ignoring the public safety !
@scychan Unfortunately many believe their own personal needs far outweigh those of the public.
