Charge: Seattle coach sought sex from girl, 13
SEATTLE -- An ex-assistant football coach at a Seattle high school has been charged with attempted child rape following allegations that he sought sex from a 13-year-old girl and an undercover cop.
King County prosecutors contend Omar Urrutia sent sexually explicit text messages to the girl and also propositioned a Kent Police detective posing as a 13-year-old. According to charging documents, Urrutia also is suspected of paying another young teen for sex.
Urrutia, a Bellevue resident recently employed as a football coach at Franklin High School, has been charged with attempted child rape and communication with a minor for immoral purposes. A Seattle Public Schools spokeswoman said Urrutia's contract with the district expired at the end of football season and will not be renewed.
Filing charges earlier this month, prosecutors claimed Urrutia attempted to arrange a three-way sexual encounter with two 13-year-old girls, one of whom was actually an undercover detective. Urrutia was purportedly arrested after arriving at the Renton Transit Center for that "date."
In late October, the 13-year-old's mother discovered a series of sexually explicit text messages between Urrutia and her daughter, the Kent detective said in court documents.
In the messages, the detective continued, Urrutia also discussed paying the girl for sex and providing her with alcohol and drugs. According to charging documents, Urrutia, 35, signed each text message "Coach ~O~," though he claimed to be seven years younger than his actual age.
The girl later told police she met Urrutia in an Albertson's grocery parking lot after a friend asked Urrutia for $1. Court documents indicate Urrutia obtained the other girl's phone number and later paid her for sex; her age is not given in charging documents.
According to charging documents, the 13-year-old visited Urrutia's home on one occasion. She said she felt Urrutia was "creepy" and nicknamed him "Weirdo" in the mobile phone she was using.
"She said she never had sexual contact with Urrutia, although he continually inquired about it and was willing to pay for it," the detective told the court.
At one point, the girl and her friend considered robbing Urrutia of his money and car, but did not attempt to do so, the detective added.
After the girl's mother contacted police, the Kent detective contacted Urrutia, posing as a friend of the girl's.
Recounting text message exchange in court documents, the detective said she described herself as a 13-year-old and discussed school before Urrutia offered to pay both girls to have sex with him.
The detective then arranged to meet Urrutia at the Renton Transit Center. Urrutia was arrested there on Oct. 29.
According to charging documents, Urrutia initially claimed he'd gotten disoriented after visiting a nearby grocery store to buy watermelon-flavored vodka. The detective claimed Urrutia ultimately admitted he was there to meet the girls but denied any ill intentions.
Questioned about his sexually explicit text exchanges with the 13-year-old, Urrutia claimed he was discussing "spitting or swallowing gum" and went on to say he believed the girl was kidding about being 13, the detective told the court.
"When detectives asked Urrutia if he thought he was attracted to younger girls, he replied 'not all the time, no,'" the detective added.
Seattle Public Schools spokeswoman Theresa Whipple said Urrutia's arrest came after the Franklin football season concluded. Urrutia had been with the team one season.
After learning of the allegations, the Franklin High School principal met with the football team and cheer squad, Whipple said. Any students with concerns were instructed to contact the Kent Police Department, which conducted the investigation.

I for one am not so quick to judge! At least till I see some naked pictures of the sweet little thing.

Too many men will try ANYTHING they think they might be able to get away with: consider the resident or homeowner in Minnesota who shot an unarmed intruder to death with a rifle on Thanksgiving Day - a 17-year-old youth - then shot and wounded a second unarmed intruder - an 18-year-old girl - and then finally because she "laughed" when he tried to shoot her again and his gun jammed, he dragged her still alive and gasping for breath to his basement before using a handgun to deliver what he himself described as a "good clean finishing shot" upward through her chin into the unarmed, gravely wounded, terrified and helpless girl's brain.

Some "people" (using the term loosely) just seem to think that rules and laws and issues of respect for life and human rights are only for "other people". Or as the fiction Harry Callahan put it, "A Man's Got to Know his Limitations."

The 13 year old and her friends sound just as bad as he does. She would have continued on had her mom not put a stop to it. Thinking of robbing the guy? Wow. They grow up so fast....

However, am I the only one that has a serious issue with the way this 13 year old girl behaved? She engaged in numerous sexually explicit texts with this guy and even WENT TO HIS HOME even though the girl claims that he was creepy.

 @Tattooed_Angel What I strongly suspect is that this sort of early-teen acting out is FAR more common then many of us realize. Far too many parents hand their sons and daughters cell phones and computers and Internet-connected game consoles, and then take no real notice of what goes on with same. 13-year-olds like these get in touch with one another without parents knowing who the "friends" are, much less the content of what is being exchanged, and then one slips in an acquaintance like this man and things just snowball from there. The mass load of sexual contexts found in contemporary "entertainment" is not helping things one bit, either - I think it stimulates premature curiosity while inuring young people to situations that really should be causing them great alarm.
Seems to me that many of the same kinds of issues arose when I was growing up (1960s) despite no internet and all telephones tethered by wires: there were enough latchkey kids that problems did arise, but also enough watchful and nosy neighbors that the problems were at least usually exposed quick enough. Misbehaving 13-year-old girls got sent to live with an "aunt" in another state for long enough to cool down (and all too often to have the baby). On the other hand, predators too often got away with it if they were careful not to get caught in the act and if they did not seriously injure or kill anybody. Families often just hid their "funny uncles" out of a sense of familial shame, and one single mother I knew destroyed all evidence she could of her own sons' involvement in a vicious murder.
DNA fingerprinting and other forensics has changed all that - but I fear maybe also has made especially sexual child predators more prone to try to destroy "evidence".
The bottom line is that children whose parents do not watch over them properly - and do not teach them self-respect, values and appropriate behavior - are at HUGE risk in our society today. And all together too many "parents" are actually pursuing and demonstrating the very same risky behaviors that they truly need to strive to suppress in their offspring.
Ugh, what is wrong with people? Even if a 13-year old is physically developed (as many are), emotionally she is still just a kid. Gross. I hope he rots in jail.

 @chandler I wish the terminology was a little more discriminate. Some 13yos are, by the will of nature, already in childbearing age. Secondary characteristics fully developed. With women that age men are breaking the law when engaging in sexual relations, but it's a whole different story when men (or women) engage in such relations with 5,7, or 9 year olds. That's what a pedophile is to me. Not excusing the creep, but I think we should be more precise with the terminology we use for the offenses.
