Felon faces new charges after Lakewood police killings threat

TACOMA, Wash. -- "It’s officers like you who cause people to do things like what happened in Lakewood. That’s what got those four officers killed.”

Convicted felon Dejon Dewayne Michael Simpson is facing new charges after making the above statement, accompanied by finger-gun gestures, to two community corrections officers last week, according to the Pierce County Prosecutor's Office.

The 24-year-old Simpson, who was previously convicted for riot with a deadly weapon, assault and malicious mischief, was brought into an area hospital with a stab wound to his back Feb. 28.

When the two officers assigned as his overnight guards prevented visitors from entering his room, Simpson became angry and started pulling out IV lines and a monitor cable, according to the Prosecutor's Office.

After the officers restrained Simpson to his bed, he made the statement referencing a 2009 incident in which four Lakewood Police Department officers were shot and killed at a coffee shop, according to the Prosecutor's Office.

Officers felt the statement, along with Simpson's finger-gun gestures, were direct threats.

On Wednesday, Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist charged Simpson with intimidating a public servant. Simpson is already in jail on unrelated charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and theft.

“We take threats to officer safety extremely seriously,” Lindquist said in a press release. “Attacks on police officers and the justice system are attacks on our entire community.”
