Mother Nature's gift: A little snow to some, strong wind to others
»Play Video
SEATTLE --While much of the Seattle area was dealing with the traditional wet Christmas, a few spots did get enough snow to merit the elusive White Christmas.
Some snow has been falling in the Hood Canal area, central coast, parts of Southwestern Washington and even areas in Kitsap County. So far snow totals haven't been reported as too heavy, but enough to bring a few inches to those locations.
Winter Storm Warnings are set to expire at 3 p.m. for the Hood Canal and Southwestern Washington as the snow is set to change to rain. The other snow advisories expired at 1 p.m.
Gusty east winds remain in the Cascade foothills as well and a Wind Advisory for gusts to 50 mph remains in effect until 6 p.m.
The threat of snow and freezing temperatures has prompted Kitsap County to open a severe weather shelter at the Bremerton Food Line (1600 12th Street) that will be open from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. both Monday and Tuesday nights.
Temperatures will continue to warm above freezing and all areas will be rain by evening.
Rain showers will continue overnight and into Wednesday, but a drier pattern is setting up for the rest of the year.

We got 4" of snow at the Grays Harbor/Mason County line. Â I went to bed with no snow, so it was a wonderful surprise this morning! Â However, the four hour power outage was not!
it's started to snow about 9:00 and its 10:10 and there is about 1" of snow on the ground here in Port Orchard already
Â
Â
I said earlier that "I bet it rains"...Well lookie there it's pouring down rain outside.Good day to be a duck.
Couple inches on the ground and still coming down in Shelton!
Seattleites: Aw, maybe next year... it's too warm. Or how about a white New Years!!
My boy is begging for snow that he and his Daddy can go play in. I would love a recent amount of snow, more than the couple of inches we occasionally get.
Almost 0430 in the hills above Sultan, wind is kicking. Cat loves, chasing leaves all about.
Â
Snow would be great. Stop getting those sleigh burn marks in my roof for once! Sheesh!
[Expletive deleted]!!! A refrigerator full of frozen food and probable power outages on the way! Merry Christmas, everyone. We'll let you know how the day comes out.
@LMD If it snows and you lose power... use the snow as your new freezer! Put all your food in the snow and pack snow around it. Works every time!
@LMD Living in any of these areas you should know to have a generator!
@k_did  @LMD Correct. But be nice. A mind is a terrible thing.
It would sure be nice to have a good snow like we did back in '68-'69... that winter was COLD!!
@Crashbox Im down for that or also 2008.. right before Christmas after it stopped snowing, we had 33 inches on the ground..
@Crashbox Yup, I remember that winter. I was in high school. I can remember at least two big separate snow storms of almost two feet that winter. I also remember people ice skating on Green Lake as it was frozen, I think, all the way across for what seemed to be the whole month of January.
@mandy h If I recall correctly we still had snow on the ground clear into late March and maybe even to the first of April! I remember going out to Issaquah circa January of '69 where my aunt had a pond in her back yard which was several feet deep. Frozen across and almost solid through.
Oooh I would love a good old fashioned christmas day storm where all the power goes out for days, trees topple from the snow, and no one can get anywhere and everything is closed!
I'm betting good money on a wet, windy christmas. No snow. I grew up singing I'm dreaming of a Wet Christmas.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Ive lived here in Washington for two decades now and the closest Ive seen to a blizzard is at Dairy Queen. When you can wade through the snow at knee level then that is when you have a blizzard.
@DarkRenegade I live in Seabeck. This past week I was wading in snow at knee level! 19 inches in 17 hours...
@DarkRenegade Chunky chocolate chip blizzard gets my wife every time.
@DarkRenegade Back when I was 6 years old, we had to walk to school 20 miles through 4 feet of snow uphill and into a 40 mile an hour wind (both ways) and it was -10 F.! haha... Merry Christmas everybody!
@Scoondog @DarkRenegade uphill bothways also I`m sure!! Merry chrimmus..
@Scoondog  @DarkRenegade you had to walk all of that barefoot!  Carrying your little brother Timmy on your back!!!!!  :-)  lol!
Merry Christmas!
@DarkRenegade Lighten up!! We are all well aware that this area overreacts when it comes to snow. My hubby was born and raised in Wisconsin. He shares your disgust at the reaction a predicted "snow event" gets from us Seattleites. He also however knows better than to take a little good natured ribbing to heart.
Â
I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas.
@DarkRenegade @Petwlkr @hrhkellyb @Scoondog I too used to live in Denver and remember the blizzard of Christmas 1983 very well along with some lesser but still spectacular ones!
@Petwlkr  @hrhkellyb  @Scoondog How unexpected to read childish attempts at humor during an adult conversation. I lived in the Denver area for several years where a blizzard lived up to the name whereas here in Washington, the forecast of "snow" causes schools to delay 1 to 2 hours for no reason.
@hrhkellyb  @Scoondog  @DarkRenegade Then there was the time you had to fight off a Bear with your loose leaf notebook.
Actually, the forecasters got it at least close for the South Western Kitsap Peninsula for the 21st. I am hoping they are wrong this time but I suspect it will be much worse for us than what they are predicting. I still have almost a foot of snow left in my yard-it comes up to almost my knees. I have had snow since last Saturday and what is out there right now is frozen solid. Saturday was the first day I could get out of my driveway without 4 wheeling but then I got stuck trying to come back down the driveway. I have a feeling I am going to be stuck at home for Christmas and more than likely will lose power.
Â
You have to hand it to the forecasters in this area. There are so many variables due to land mass/altitude shifts along with ocean and Puget Sound effects that can greatly alter the weather outcome with only small deviations. If they get it right even half the time they are doing good. We live in a very unique location-one that gives us crazy weather but also offers us one of the most beautiful (and diversified) regions of North America.Try to be kinder to the weather forecasters-they are doing the best they can considering the micro-climate they have to deal with.
Â
Hopefully, I can share some of the *joy* of having lots of snow with everyone else-even if it is just for a day!
Something different will happen and then the weather folks will completely disregard what they said, not acknowledge that they were wrong at all, and report something different as if that was their original forecast. Â It happens all the time.
Yawn!
Feh, the most amount of snow we saw melted after a couple of hours. I stopped worrying about "blizzards" when we moved here. You want a blizzard move to the midwest!Â
The national weather service sent out two cell phone 'Blizzard Warnings' a couple of days ago. Is this the first blizzard, or the second one that they warned us about? Should we start hoarding water and other essentials? Scott!, what are we to do?
Everyone have a great holiday with great cheer to all!
I would love some snow but would settle for a dark, rainy day. There's nothing that bugs me more than having sunshine on Christmas. Boy, you can tell I'm a native! Gimme snow!!!!!!
I would love snow for Christmas but I put my money on having rain instead.Â
Well . . . the last storm "storm prediction" left me as underwhelmed as the 12/21/12 predictions, up there with Y2K.
Â
We'll see if this storm is even worth me getting out of my comfy bed to see if we can build another snow woman.
Oh the weather outside is frightful... but the fire is so delightful... and since we have no place to go....
@Anselm Stub the toe, stub the toe, stub the toe....

@âââ  @AdAckbar  @Anselm Thank you for that grammatical correction. I do pride myself on that and have clearly failed! ; )
 @Scoondog  @AdAckbar  @Anselm You're
@Anselm I'm not fallin' for that one again!
I don't believe, cried wolf too many times. Hope I'm wrong though, I would love some snow.
I bet it rains.
Bring it on!
I am ready !
