Counties set to provide same-sex marriage licenses

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Ten same-sex couples were selected in a lottery Monday to receive some of the first licenses issued under the new Washington state law allowing gay marriage.
Thurston County Auditor Kim Wyman held the lottery involving 15 couples that sought to receive their license at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.
King County, which includes Seattle, also plans to start issuing licenses at that time but did not stage a lottery. Couples there will begin lining up at 10 p.m. Wednesday, and the county will issue licenses from 12:01 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.
Thurston County will close its office after the first 10 licenses are issued at 12:01 a.m. but will reopen for extended hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday.
"This is a historic event in Washington," Wyman said. "We're very excited and we want to commemorate that event, and we look forward to giving all of these couples a license."
Last month, 54 percent of voters approved Referendum 74 regarding a state law passed by legislators earlier this year that legalized same-sex marriage. The law had been signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire but was on hold pending the outcome of the referendum.
Secretary of State Sam Reed will officially certify the election, and Gregoire will again sign same-sex marriage into law at a ceremony on Wednesday in Olympia.
The law doesn't actually take effect until Thursday, when gay and lesbian couples can start picking up their wedding certificates and licenses. Because the state has a three-day waiting period, the earliest that marriage certificates could be signed at a wedding or ceremony is Sunday.
Lynn Grotsky and Lisa Brodoff of Lacey were the first couple selected in the Thurston County lottery.
Washington is now one of nine states that have legalized gay marriage. Maine and Maryland approved same-sex marriage with public votes last month as well.
Six other states - New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont - and the District of Columbia had already enacted laws or issued court rulings that permit same-sex marriage.

Well as we all know, if we want to admit it or not, we all harbor a little prejudice, my Dad was a very prejudiced man, we were taught (it is a learned behavior) how to be that way from him, but as I got older and more educated, the hate and intolerence started to fade, it never totally went away, and I fight with it every day, I try and look at things threw the other persons eyes and ask myself, would I want to be treated like that? most always NO, it's hard enough to live in this world without having to struggle with how some hate you for who you are, what you look like, how you live, love or the color of your skin, and sorry to say, that will never change for some, we need to do the best we can, be as kind as we can, accept all people as they are,and our journey threw this life might go a little smoother for us and those around us.
So, what did the counties have to do to be "set to provide"? I guess change the application form and maybe the license itself to be a little more generic? Will people have the option to use the old ornate marriage license, suitable for framing, target practice, or lining a birdcage? I don't think I will ever get married again if something happened to the Mrs. who tolerates me now. I guess if I wanted to I could make one in Paintshop that specifies who takes care of the kitty litter and who has to dig up the septic tank if something goes wrong, etc. Current marriage licenses are way too generic already.
The Gay community must be nuts to want marriage. It will turn into a legal nightmare for couples who want to split the sheets.
I am glad we as a state have passes gay marriage. I think it shows the maturity of some people in our state. Too those who are planning to wed, gay or straight, I some advice. Take your vows seriously. Treat your marriage as something other than a piece of paper, make it more than that. It must be more that that if you are to have a long and happy life together. With that I wish you all good luck.
Heterosexual marriage is rapidly falling out of favor, divorce rates are exceeding 50% and birth rates are declining across the board - yet these people want to jump headfirst into the legal insanity that is called marriage.  Marriage is not a commitment between two lovers - it is a contract between you and the government.  Caveat  emptor!
@UtterReality No it's a contract between you and the other person and its recognized by the government.
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.Â

In the spirit of political correctness or whatever nonsense you want to call it... If people are so offended by using the word Christmas that everything has to be Holiday this and Holiday that then I just want to say that I am offended by the word marriage being used in the same context as 'same sex'. It is not a marriage. It is a civil union. You can call it anything you like but it is not a marriage.
@run4fun people are not offended by the word Christmas nor anything to do with it. However it is polite too say happy holidays because Christmas isn't the only holiday during that time. It could be offensive to tell a Jewish person happy holidays just as it would be offensive for the Jewish person to tell you happy Chanukah.
@run4fun, Name of Christmas has become a problem because religion is deeply embroiled in the politics. When America elected an atheist for president, then this is a democracy and a country without much brain washed
 @run4fun It is now Run4fun!

@Maynard G Krebbs  So, thats all you think bout when you think bout gay people?? Gay sex??? I think someone is stuck in the Closet! What goes on in someone else's bedroom is none of you Business...Whatsoever....!
@jowsuf Well, as you know, most kids from age 13, and up (sometimes younger) have an opinion already about being gay (and just about everything else) I don't think any school class on the subject would do any good, there are bullys in every school, they possibly learn this behavior at home, where no doubt they learn to be perjudice against other kids no matter what that is, gay, fat, glasses, nerds, etc. kids run in packs, they pick on the weakest, a better class to add to school would be to have tolerance of those they see as different, but again, they have already formed an opinion of the way things should be, and it's hard to un-teach what they no doubt learned at home.
@SJ Sorry if I wasn't clear in my comment. I am not saying it SHOULD be taught in schools, I'm just saying if it was I wouldn't see the problem. You do make good points, though. I imagine that if it were kept as a small topic in the standard sex ed curriculum it would go over just fine. But no, there shouldn't be a special "gay day" or anything like that.
@jowsuf Why do you feel it should be taught in a school setting?how does one teach about homosexuality? what if a teacher does not accept that way of life? young people who are homosexual are teased by peers as it is, what could be taught about being gay that would make them any less tollerent? kids can be very cruel, why bring this to the forefront? I'm reasonably sure that in this day and age middle and high school age kids know all about homosexuality, so what age school kids do you propose to teach this life style to? human is human, reguardless if you are gay or straight, where does the difference lie? that is already being taught in sex ed. so there is nothing to gain by teaching about homosexuality in a school setting.
@Bianca  @jowsuf  @Alexandra  @Maynard Sorry, I still don't understand your opposition to your children being taught about homosexuality in schools. It's probably not a topic that needs to be covered, but I don't see anything inherently wrong with it. I'm not sure if you know this, but you can't convince a person to be gay. You're gay or you aren't gay. Frankly if it were taught in schools that it's okay then maybe it would take some weight off homosexual students' shoulders who feel confused or ashamed. People young and older alike commit suicide over societal pressure over being gay. Wouldn't this be an opportunity to begin to change that? Everyone deserves the chance to feel safe and accepted. Not everyone will be, but we can't keep living in a society that demonizes things about people that cannot be changed, or things that people have no desire to change for that matter.
Â
That's my opinion. What are your thoughts on this? I know your stance, I just want to understand why you feel that way.
 @Bianca  @jowsuf  @Alexandra  @Maynard Liberal teacher with an agenda?Â
@Melissa Angevine  @Bianca Is homosexuality being taught in schools?
@Bianca  @jowsuf  @Alexandra  @Maynard That is what private schools are for, people who want to bury their childrens head in the sand next to theirs.
Â
Â
@jowsuf @Alexandra Shepiro @Maynard G Krebbs -- That is right I teach them about it, not you and not some liberal teacher with an agenda period. So, again, if you want to keep what YOU do in the bedroom that this fine, but once you bring it out, then we've got problems period.
@DeadRabitz -- We will agree to disagree on this one.Â
@Bianca @Alexandra Shepiro @Maynard G Krebbs I would assert that homosexuality is natural. It has been observed in nature for a long long time. Just because you don't like it or agree with it doesn't make it unnatural.
@Bianca  @Alexandra Shepiro  @Maynard G Krebbs The only thing that's being taught is that it's okay to be gay. If you don't think it's okay to be gay, you're the one with the problem.Â
Â
Your children should learn about homosexuality. Why? Because homosexuals are a part of our society. You don't shelter children away from things you disapprove of. You teach them about it. You help them understand things so they know how to interact with them. They need to know, because they WILL have to interact with it. You can disapprove of the world all you want, but the world doesn't stop doing what it does for your approval.Â
@Alexandra Shepiro  @Maynard G Krebbs -- When you think you have the right to teach it to my children as natural, it becomes my business. If you want to leave your chosen lifestyle in the bedroom, then we've got no problem.Â
@run4fun In case you missed the memo - it is now.

@Audio Cat If the court calls a hand a foot it doesn't make it so.

@marinevet2511 Amazing, I feel the same what about you. Oh and you might want to change your name. All that hate makes you offensive to actual vets.
@marinevet2511 We can't Stand people like you!
@marinevet2511 Cant stand bigots. Never have and never will
We are a sick society //
@Sandman // Yes we are a Sick Society when The Basic HUMAN Rights of people who love each other, and want to take care of each other are Not given to them!
@Alexandra Shepiro So you are saying without that piece of paper, people who love and want to care for each other can't do that without a certificate? just my opinion, but I don't think that piece of paper is going to magically make everything equal as it does for a married man and woman.
@SJ The people who are opposed to gay marriage got it on the ballot through the initiative process.  The legislature had already voted to recognize gay marriage.
@SJ I am not telling them, the courts will do that.  They will eventually enforce the Constitution, specifically  the equal protection under the law clause and the full faith and credit clause.  When it comes to the US Constitution the state laws and amendments mean nothing. Â
@SJ The people do not have the right to deprive others of their rights.  The votes that take place will eventually be overturned by the courts.  What if the citizens of Washington voted to make everyone Catholic or Jewish?  Oh well the will of the people, no.  The Constitution is above that. Â
@DeadRabitz Who put the gay marriage issue to a vote anyway?
@DeadRabitz It is also everyones right to vote as they want, no matter who put or what is on a ballot.
@DeadRabitz You don't have the right to tell others what is right and what is wrong in any state.
@DeadRabitz I don't know, is it? some say yes, some say no, it is up to the people of that state I suppose, who gave the right to the people of a State to vote on what rights people should or shouldn't have?
@SJ Really, as a heterosexual male of over 21, what right am I lacking...in any state?
@SJ Its not about what people what, it's about what's right. It is wrong to deny anyone, no matter the state, the right to marry.
@DeadRabitz Everyone here in Washington has the "right" to marry now, so what's your point? yea, the right to own a gun, the right to marry who you want, the right to free speech, the right to smoke pot, the right to drive on the highways, the right to own a house, the right to practice whatever religion you choose, the right to have your rights read to you.......Rights, Rights, Rights, everyone has them, yet none of have them all, the law of the land, who makes the rights we all deserve?
@DeadRabitz Why do you care what happens in Alabama, Texas, or any other state concerning gay marriage? everyone has the right to vote the way they want also, weather you like it, think it's equal or not, the people spoke here in Washington, so let the people of Alabama, Texas or where ever speak for their State, if you are so worried about Alabama or Texas and the gay marriage issue, maybe you should move to one of these places and take up a petition.
@SJ I am not talking about a gun but the right to own one, like the right to get married. Use it or not, I careless. But everyone has the right.
@SJ tell me how equal are gay people in Alabama, Texas, or any of those other states that passed amendments banning gay marriage?
@DeadRabitz Last, unlike an object one ownes, oh lets say like a "Gun" a marriage certificate is not proof of ownership, one does not own another, that is not what commitment and marriage is suppose to be about.
@DeadRabitz Ok, the first right (to marry) is a done deal, right? second, the commitment was already there, right? so why do you keep saying "Denied the right"? the way I see it, the rights have been addressed, gays have been given the right to marry, that point is moot, so where does it go from there? what other rights do married homosexual couples "not" have verses married hetrosexual couples? if that piece of paper stands for rights, well, seems everyone is equal now that everyone can get one, right?
@SJ No, it's not about the paper. That is what you don't get. It's more than that. It's about people's rights. There are two things at play here. First, the right of everyone to marry. Second, the commitment that people make to each other when they get married. Sure you can have a commitment to another person without being married to them and maybe you never want it get married but being denide the right to do so is wrong. My wife may never own a gun but she would be upset if someone told her she didn't have the right to own one.
@DeadRabitz No, you don't get it, it is a piece of paper, and that piece of paper is not going to change anything, what use does it have? what purpose does it serve? what is it going to change? Licenses, Licenses. Licenses, you need a Licence for everything, to marry, to drive, to sell liquor, to run a business, to put on your dog, the fact is, it does not change anything, if you love someone you can do that without a License, whoever you choose to be with, you can do that without a License, what I'm saying, now that gays have the "License" what does that change? it is still going to be an up hill battle to get that piece of paper recognized by another big brother to make any difference, a marriage license is suppose to be much more than to open doors on insurance forms,  last wills, hospital visits, that is what this marriage license is being used for, nothing more.
@SJ you don't get it because you see it as a piece of paper.
@DeadRabitz No, I guess according to you I don't get how that certificate is going to work miracles and change everyone's life for the better, there are a few hurdles yet to jump, I would think the "Rights Issue" is over and done, gay people have the "Right" to marry, so onward with the fight with the Feds, for those basic human rights.
@SJ @Alexandra Shepiro it's not the paper, it's what that paper represents. It represents a bit of equality. It's about people's rights but something tells me you just don't get it.
@Sandman // WOW. Judgemental much. You must be a TRUE Christian
Do you even realize how hypocritic your reply is, or how in your attempt to insult Sandman you unsulted countless people and lumped them all into one stereotype?
Epic fail.
