Severed cable leaves 911, phone outages in San Juan Islands

FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. -- Residents on the San Juan Islands were without phone and 911 service Wednesday afternoon after a fiber cable was severed on San Juan Island, officials said.

CenturyLink says an outside contractor was to blame, and that if residents on San Juan, Lopez and Orcas Islands need emergency services, they need to go to their local fire stations.

CenturyLink says they estimate repairs will be completed around midnight Thursday morning and they are working non-stop until the problem is fixed.

By 9 p.m., all local calling and 911 services had been restored on the islands.

It's the second time in the past year the islands have had phone service affected by a severed cable. Back in November, a cut line left the island without full phone service for two weeks.
