TACOMA, Wash. -- The Roy man who put his 6-week-old daughter in the freezer to stop her from crying was sentenced Friday to 16 years in prison.

Tyler Deutsch, 26, pleaded guilty in January to first degree assault of a child stemming from a May 25, 2013 incident in which he beat his infant daughter before putting her in a freezer, according to prosecutors.

Deutsch was home alone with the baby and wanted to take a nap but the girl was crying, so he put her in the freezer, wearing only a diaper, with some frozen cauliflower and a bag of ice.

Deutsch was awakened when the baby's mother arrived back at the couple's trailer and pulled his daughter out of the freezer. Prosecutors say the baby had been in the freezer for roughly 90 minutes. The girl had blistered skin and a body temperature of 84 degrees.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the baby's mother tried to call 911 but Deutsch took the phone away from her because he didn't want to get in trouble. The mother was able to leave the trailer and get a neighbor to call for help.

The girl was treated for blisters, a broken arm and leg, and a head injury.

"Though the child has fully recovered, and we are grateful for that," Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said in a news release. "This was a horrible and inexplicable crime."
