'Deadliest Catch' star: 'I pretty much hate people because of this'

SEATTLE -- A young man who desperately needed help was taken advantage of by a mysterious stranger, and now a famous family friend is speaking out about what he calls a "deception with dire consequences."
For the first time, Johnathan Hillstrand, star of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," is talking about how he says he was deceived by a heartless stranger.
Last June, a woman claiming to be an Indiana nurse began communicating with Hillstrand over Twitter.
"So I start talking to her, she starts saying, 'I love you,' and stuff. I sort of got scared, and she was going to come meet me twice," he said.
Instead, the woman stood him up twice in Anchorage, so he called things off.
It was later that Hillstrand learned that a family friend and neighbor in Maple Valley was in a life-or-death situation. Hillstrand stepped in to help, making a 20 minute video for 20-year-old Thomas Doty, who was battling a rare form of bone cancer.
Hillstrand asked his fans to help, too.
"I was trying to help them out to raise money for their son," he said.
The woman who had stood him up earlier contacted him again, saying she would donate $250,000 for Doty's treatment.
Then came a month of wild tales and fake checks, but no actual money. Doty eventually got the treatment he needed, but it was too late. He died in December.
The entire incident has left Hillstand with a bad taste in his mouth.
"I hate the Internet, and I pretty much hate people because of this," he said.
But Hillstrand said the woman's celebrity obsession continued, even after Doty's death.
"She took pictures in front of my house here, and pictures in front of my store in Alaska," he said.
Hillstrand and the Doty family feel the woman is partially responsible for Thomas' death. Authorities are investigating, but there are few laws on the books that apply, because it seems the woman did not benefit financially.
"I can't believe there at not any repercussion for this. It makes me sick," Hillstrand said.
Earlier this month, a woman in Florida was so moved by Doty's story that she did some online digging and thinks she has figured out who the mystery woman is. Meanwhile, the Doty family have another problem -- their Maple Valley home is scheduled for foreclosure auction on Friday.

as the saying gos, money talks yes it walks ...weve all wore our hearts on our selves at one time or another, this is beyond that!. im on johns side on this one.yet knowing this is one out of how many? and yeah hearing, there is no room for hate, did not help me feel better. just more confused.
Did Johnny Boy just fall off the turnip truck ? Good lord how naive can you be ? ? ?
All that lack of sleep on the fishing boat must REALLY put a drain on the ol' gray matter !
Obviously she's got some emotional problems. He's got himself your typical celebrity stalker. How responsible they are for their own behavior is debatable. But he needs to realize because of the PR he gets - it's not surprising he's attracted one.
She stood him up twice and then offered to pay $250,000 to help a kid.Â
I feel for the guy but come on! It had to be obvious she was full of crap by the point of being offered $250,000.Â
He shouldn't be shocked she didn't pay and its sad if he wasted valuable time listening to her stories but I don't see how she is responsible for the death.
This story brakes my heart .Sorry John and sorry for everyone's loss!!! this lady if you want to call her that needs to get what she has coming .thats all i can say :(
TO THOSE WHO THINK JOHNATHAN OR ANY OF THE DEADLIEST CATCH MEN ARE FAKE YOU NEED TO RETHINK THAT BECAUSE THEY ARE AS REAL AS THEY COME.First off this women had said that she was going to help the family and she LIED to both the hillstrands and to the family.JOHNATHAN and the hillstrands did help the women the best they could. This women stood johnathan up and stalks him.Because taking pics outside his house is stalking maybe not so much the store because it is a public place open to all who wish to shop their or just go in there unless they have refused service to her or asked her to leave,BUT HIS HOUSE IS STALKING.Johnathan should put a restraining order on this bit(h.
@Pamela Austad
Chill â two old sayings:
Believe nothing you only hear, and only half of what you seeâ¦.
Actions speak louder than words.
Then youâre not as apt to get suckered in by jerks.
I am not saying that he isn't a good guy also. Just show some better judgment.Â
@Pamela Austad Who said they are fake? Who in the hell would send off $250,00 to someone? Who has that kind of money? If he believed her then to bad! Come on he is an adult and should know better. My kids wouldn't have even bought into that.
I won't help my relatives with my money, but with some crazy total stranger that has proven to be very unreliable. checks in the mail- this is what money does to people- turns them into monsters
Money and fame do this to people. I blame Hollywood.
The 7 minute mark speaks volumes in the linked video below, as does the beginning in terms of a great man with a huge heart - His name is Capt. Johnathan Hillstrand.
To those that think Johnathan truly doesn't show compassion for others, take a close look at the ONLY person that left his vessel to accompany and support two other young men that lost their father.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=related&v=C-coqoRoOVM
Johnathan not only tried to help his buddy, Thomas Doty, and without him announcing it, he generously helped the Doty family. Is there no compassion left in our world today? A boy just lost his life and his family is in agony.
As sad as it is there are people out there who just wait to take advantage when ever they can. They take away the trust that you want to put in some one and they make it harder for the people that actually do need the help to get it. It makes it really hard to trust anyone when you feel like you can't even trust your own judgement.Â
Sounds like he was trolled hard. Â NEVER trust people on the internet. Â Seriously.
good lord this guy makes more frakin' money than god and he is asking for help for "HIS" relatives?? Â give me a break!!! Â his karma is what is standing him up.
@Vole Whisperer if he can spend 50k in a kent pot shop he can help him
please dont give up on people  yes some people are cruel but others do have hearts just be careful love yaÂ
Mr. Hillstrand, you have a big heart! There's only one problem with that...it's a big target. Don't change because of this, please. We, as fans love you, and see your heart through the show as a real guy. So sorry this creature took your kindness for weakness but, rest assured, she's outnumbered! Keep on loving life and people, Jonathan! -Bryan
That is so disturbing!! That person is incredibly sick and nasty, there has to be a way to track these sob's down and prosecute them.....I am really sorry for your loss, Jonathan, and good luck keeping the sicko's at bay!
That is a terrible story & I know from personal experience how conniving & heartless people can be, especially over the internet! But this IS realy me & I read this article simply by being a fan of Deadliest Catch. I do not need to pretend to be someone I am not, nor do others! i know it is hard, but try to keep some faith that we are not all opportunistic (or stalker crazy). i am just a fan who loves that show!
okay. so he got lied to by some RANDOM woman. it's not her fault at all. the family should be responsible for the hospital bills. not some RANDOM woman. JH has the money, he should have paid it if it was that important to him. yes, it sucks to be lied to and especially at that magnitude. however, we have to be responsible for ourselves. if we recieve a gift of that amount of money, then hey, that is truly a blessing. and could have been put to good use, but in no way shape form or fashion is it some RANDOM womans fault because she lied to a TV STAR about money. i feel for the family that lost their son. that is very unfortunate. i hope they find peace. but never trust people that you HAVEN'T ACTUALLY MET!
I hear ya, Johnny. With you all the way. So sorry about Thomas. I cannot believe this "woman" not only did this, but is going to get away with it. There HAS to be some punishment! You, my friend, should charge her with stalking and harassment.  Don't forget the Restraining Order. You show great restraint, I'm sure, as I know exactly what I'D like to do to this "woman". I can't even type anymore, I'm shaking so much because I'm so pissed off!
@deesturbed Welll, okay but I still haven't figured out exactly what she did except lie, stand him up, and take pictures in front of his house and business. The article doesn't really describe much of a stalker. Maybe it's just a poorly written article and you know more about it than we do?
I feel ya, Johnathan. I have been doing everything I can to help some Wounded Military Heroes and have faced the same fake promises, fake checks and worse. I hope your friends get some real help from real people, just like I hope my Heroes do.
All of you who seem to think you have the right to Judge Johnathan, Had ought to look at your hand that points at him. Three of your fingers are pointing back at YOU! This is a disturbed woman, that clearly deceived him. Only Johnathan knows what went on. You can't criticize a man for falling for a woman. Or for trying to be kind and to meet her.Â
You need to focus on his point here! A young man died because a woman lied and said she was sending money so that he would get the care he needed! I too have battled Cancer. Stop focusing on finger pointing. And look at what the real point of his News cast was.Â
And yes I think it would be nice to try and help these people to keep their house. It didn't go into foreclosure because they didn't want to pay it. They were trying to save their child's life.Â
BMK, you need to start thinking with the "Head" on your shoulders!Â
Sportbuff1 you think this is funny? again not getting his point and immature to say it nicely.
@Kate Milo Hunwut Fleming I disagree with you.  I can make any judgment I wish to, you or anybody else cannot stop that whether it's right, wrong, or otherwise, and what difference does it really make?  I can also criticize him all I want, why would you think otherwise?  I think his motives were outstanding, I wish nothing but the best for the man and respect the job he does out there.  He made a foolish choice, it happens to the best of people and we should all learn from it and take responsibility for our own decisions.  This young man didn't die solely based on this woman's lie, it may have contributed to the poor decisions that were made but he died because of the rare form of bone cancer he had.
@oledawg @Kate Milo Hunwut Fleming That's the part I'm confused about, how did she supposedly cause his demise? "Hillstrand and the Doty family feel the woman is partially responsible for Thomas' death."
There are many mean spirited people in the world, but to put all your trust in someone you cannot see or truly know is a bit naive. Johnathan is a good person and probably not on the internet to see all the scams and meanness that goes on. I hope he is able to get over this lesson, and stop hating people, because in the same token there are a lot of nice people out here too.
He was "scared" but was going to meet her. TWICE. He makes no sense. Everyone knows he's a horndog, maybe he needs to start thinking with the head on his shoulders and not the one in his pants.
A wise person keeps his own counsel- that is to say he shares little about himself or his life with others. What is the driving need to "friend" when such friendship is so shallow? Is it pride that drives some to display their accomplishments, thoughts and desires with all and sundry on the internet?
Survival has often been a matter of not being noticed - of course not being noticed by government. Keep in the shadows and look out upon the light.
To all the people saying they wish there was something that could be done about their house going info foreclosure... according to public records they are under water on it more than 100K (like so many of us). It could actually be a relief in the long run to be able to walk away from it. Just a different perspective.
Seems he's not always worried about crabs.
@Seattleisaslew LMAO !    i think ill set up a date with this fictional person. He should hook up with Manti or whatever his name is from notre dame.
With all the people commenting on this story it is too bad we cant save this womans house. I am a Mom who has had a sick child. I have been at Childrens Hospital after my son had open heart surgery. The tubes and machines and the ventilator made me almost pass out. My child is fine now and has grown into a wonderful 27 year old. I know that if I had to live in a car to provide medical care I would have. Experimental or not. If I had a friend like Jonathan Hillstrand and needed to raise money I would be glad he was on my team. I hope this lady does the right thing and leaves Mr Hillstrand alone and never causes this pain to another family. There are so many good decent people in the world that would be willing to help anyone but sometimes we feel that our small donation can't solve the problems. What we forget is our small donation is a drop in the bucket but with all the other small donations the bucket is over flowing.
Really, take away his license to use the web.
Anytime you meet someone on the internet you need to be very careful. To just take the word of a woman you don't even know and who had lied to you twice already is just not a good thing to do. This act was incredibly cruel on the part of the woman, but with all of the scams out there I certainly wouldn't have trusted her to come through. It's really sad how low some people will stoop.Â
@Jatok I agree that people need to be careful of who they "meet" on the internet, yet at the same time not everyone you meet on the internet is bad. I met my husband online almost 10 years ago, of course I did the smart thing and had a background check done on him before I ever met him in person, plus seeing as he was from the same area as I was originally from I called some friends who called friends... Â
By no means was I trying to imply that everyone you meet on the internet is a bad person. Sounds like you hit the jackpot lady. My point was that given the grave nature of the situation I think it would have been prudent to check this lady out and make sure she was on the up and up. Have a great day Momof2.
There was a real boy, a real cancer patient that was traumatized by the hoaxer in his final days. Want to know more about him? www.healthomas.com Watch his video. Â
Making things real!
No one can traumatize you without your consent.
So Marci Rose of Harrisville  is responsible for this families anguish. Hopefully people will harrass her a little right back. Nothing physical, just let her know she's a parasite.
I hope that someone could come in and help them keep their house from foreclosure. I think that the mystery woman should be not only held accountable but I think she needs to be the one to step up and put her money where her mouth is and get the house out of foreclosure since she wasn't able to really be there for the son who had the cancer. i hope she realizes what she has done and the faith in people she has ruined by her actions.
I do not believe Mr. Hillstrand or the Doty's deserved any of the crap that conniving woman dished out. I am sorry this happened to them and I do hope there is some way to hold her accountable for her actions.
An INDEPTH article outing the person that preyed upon a cancer stricken boy during the most crucial time; his final days.
YES, these type of people need to be held accountable!  For a moment, consider if this had happened to your child. Puts a different perspective on this story.Â

@jack jed  Get a real job loser.Â
Isn't this a rehash of a story done last week, why keep beating a dead horse? Stories like this bring out the worst in people,it reminds of Orwell's 1984, the purpose being to control people's emotions and have them seeing red Grrr ! Why intentionally bring out the worst in people, gawd knows I have been snared by these like minded articles often enough and later felt real disgust at my childish or mean spirited or like minded mob mentality. Are we all mean spiteful rubes always looking for a scapegoat and someone or something to hate? Is this the aim of our advertisers and news Co ?
@joefuss- they are not beating a dead horse, How would you feel if you are expecting someone who pledges to help a family member who has a terminal illness only to admit they were only doing it for the publicity and notority the situation would bring. As JustAword stated there are more states enacting laws on cyber-abuse and I for one is in favor of it. I am tired of the scams, the bullying, the deceptions that these people use to hurt innocent people. This is not a intentional ploy if you will by the media but real life situations that need to stop
@Dvossjr its called being responsible for one's own self. not waiting on others to pay the bill. sucks that the boy died, but it was the responsiblity of the parents to provide for their care. not some stranger.
@joefuss "Beating a dead horse?" Really? With due respect, this is another example of why every state (3 have already passed cyber-crime laws) with all other states waiting to vote on this type of cyber abuse bahavior. Read all about it here.... http://business.time.com/2013/01/22/can-you-go-to-jail-for-impersonating-someone-online/
Cyber-abuse???? Are you kidding. Unplug your computer, you may find out there's a life out there just waiting for you.
