Des Moines police seeking fatal hit-and-run car
DES MOINES, Wash. - Police are asking for the public's help in locating a car that was involved in a deadly hit-and-run collision with a pedestrian late Thursday in Des Moines.
Bob Bohl of the Des Moines police said the accident happened Thursday at about 9 p.m. in 22700 block of Marine View Drive.
A 52-year-old woman stepped out into traffic and was struck by a vehicle heading south on Marine View Drive. The victim sustained critical injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where she died Saturday morning.
Investigators initially had no information about the vehicle that hit the woman since no witnesses remained.
But police later were able to obtain information indicating the hit-and-run vehicle may have been a tan or yellow four-door older model Toyota or similar type car that has fresh front-end damage.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Des Moines Police Department at (206) 878-3301. The case number for the incident is 12-2566.

People crossing the street assuming the driver will stop for them I see this every day. It does not matter what state you're from you or what law is in place you should always look both ways not only when you're about to cross but during crossing too. We have so many drivers who are not playing attention while driving on top of all these drunk drivers.
Â
My ex-husband T-bone a drunk driver who ran a red light and I was in a the truck with him. If we were in a car we would have been ambulanced to the hospital. This drunk has 3 DUI on his record driving with suspended this guy should've been under the jail house but the judge gave him probation.
Â
Mary, I'm sorry and hope they catch this person and stick him/her way under the jail house or feed him/her to the wide hogs
Thank you all for your heartfelt condolences, it means a great deal to her family. I live in Georgia and my hands are tied. I pray the driver conscience will allow the correct action to come forth soon. My hope is that something good may come from all this and the Concerned Citizens Group will have substantial evidence that something has to change in the crosswalks. Many thanks to the police department for contacting her out of state family. They showed great compassion and in that, I am grateful. Comforting to know there are still compassionate law enforcement men/women in the world, as well as citizens. Thank you
Â
@Mary Sorry for your loss.
Â
I was in the bar of Red Robin that night and if its the same lady im thinking of, which im 99% sure it was, she was kicked out just minutes before the accident because she was highly intoxicated and showed up to the bar and caused a huge scene for about 10 mintues screaming before she was finally removed.
Â
We dont know if the driver is 100% at fault, but they shouldve stopped.
@truckload This is true, she was a troubled soul....she was a human being searching for something. Thanks truckload for pointing this out. The driver may be scared to come forth, but made it worse by driving away. And that's the point here, not who she was. Thanks
Â
@Mary My comment was made in response to those saying that the crosswalks are to blame and are dangerous and need to be changed for safety. Not to purposely point out a flaw in somebody's life. Was just playing devils advocate.
Â
You could have the safest crosswalk in the world with the perfect speed limit, but those are just guidelines to follow, and in the end, its really up to the person whether to follow them or not.
Â
Again we dont know the WHOLE story, but in his case it couldve been a combination of a pedestrain not following crosswalk rules (the person who was struck) and the driver of the car exceeding the speed limit. At night when there is no traffic, its easy to zip through that area and not realise how fast you're going.
I live in Des Moines and crossing anywhere on Marine View Drive - even with light - is risky. With light, the car turning right rarely looks to the right and I've seen many close calls. Many corners have view obstructed by cars parked along MVD and you literally have to step into lane of traffic just to "see".
Â
Yes, it is the law to stop for pedestrians but many don't. Or if one side stops, the other side speeds through thinking the vehicle behind can stop and wait. Speed limit is 35 but most go 40+, except during afternoon /evening rush (4-6 PM) where vehicles are crawling along.
Â
There was to be a Concerned Citizens Group meeting to discuss the pedestrian safety (or lack thereof) along MVD. Not sure if they've met yet.
Â
Mary - sorry for your family's loss. May you find some closure soon. Meanwhile, take comfort in the friends and family around you and pray for peace.
@newsreader I applaud your concern for pedestrian safety. However, pedestrian safety aside, when somebody does hit a pedestrian with their vehicle and doesn't stop, they not only should never be able to drive again but even spend the rest of their life in prison. There is no excuse whatsoever not to stop when hitting a pedestrian no matter who is at "fault." As a society, we have to start sending a message that acting in such an irresponsible manner will have consequences.
This was my sister Suzanne, if anyone has any information please help!!!!!!!!!!!
Â
@Mary I'm so sorry. My thoughts are with you and your family.Â
Â
I know they will find this person. It makes me so angry that this person couldn't stop.Â
Â
May God's eternal grace and love be with your entire family.
@Mary I'm so sorry. I hope you and your family gets the answers soon. Remember the good times and what a great person your sister was. Honor her by never forgetting how much she meant to you- and keeping her wonderful memory alive. Â
That's really sad. My husband and I drove past this after it happened. The police were just beginning to block off the road. I'm so sorry to hear she died. My condolences to her friends and family. Rest in peace...
My condolences to the family.

Downtown Des Moines has many crosswalks and they come without a light to stop traffic. If you are not from here, you do not know the law is for the vehicles to stop when a pedestrian is using a crosswalk. Being from another state, I did not know that I'm supposed to stop. My point is for pedestrians to NEVER assume a car will yield to you.
@ObsidianOne I'm thinking that in most states, it is against the law not to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Decades ago, maybe not but nowadays, I have to believe that in just about every state, you have to stop for a pedestrian crossing the street ...especially in a crosswalk.
