Disabled brother and sister fox terriers need a new home
»Play Video
GRAHAM, Wash. -- A disabled brother and sister fox terrier, rescued from a shelter doorstep, are in desperate need of a home.
Somebody dumped the two-legged terriers at a California shelter. The brother and sister hop like rabbits on their hind legs and were called "Slip" and "Slide" before a prosthetics company in Olympia fitted them for carts. Now they go by "Honey" and "Badger."
"They do get along quite well without (the carts)," says Patty Mauldin with Valhalla Canine Rescue.
But the new, customized carts are much less cumbersome than the old ones which were designed for dogs that were missing rear legs instead.
"Depending on the breeders, these dogs would never see the light of day," Mauldin said. "Depending on the breeder, some breeders would euthanize them right away."
Valhalla Canine Rescue in Graham is the only home these dogs have known and has been trying to find them a family for a year.
They come as a pair.
"They're terribly bonded -- breaking them up is really not an option," Mauldin said.
Mauldin says the dogs, who've used hydrotherapy, would now make great therapy pets and Valhalla is willing to cover the training cost.
"The kids forget going through chemo or having other problems because they see dogs in cars and they want to play with dogs in cars," she said.
And you can't help but smile when you see Honey and Badger rolling your way.
Valhalla also has a 15-week-old great dane that was found in a dumpster -- and he needs a new home too. You can find out more info at ValhallaRescue.org

hi
I have a three pound two legged chihuahua he was born the same way the terriers were. He's a great dog go's with me to work everyone loves him.
Those two fox terriers should do great in a good home. I would think about them but I live in Idaho. there not disabled them handy cappable
If I could get there....I'm in North Dakota.....I'd give them a happy, healthy loving home!
I think this is wonderful. Good for you for helping these dogs have a bright future. To the negative people leaving comments. How about we euthanize you or one of your family members, if God forbid you would lose a limb from accident or illness. Or how about if you have a son, daughter, and or niece, nephew born without a limb, we will just euthanize one of them. People make me sick with their perfect ideologies  of what life should be. Nothing is perfect, not you, not even a dog..
Any update?? Anyone know if they were adopted?
They are the cutest!! Oh how I would if I could!!! I'm sure everyone is saying that but I truly hope they get to dwell some where in true love and happiness!!! People who can should take them in!! The original owners should be hunted down and tried for stupidity!!!
How I wish I could take them! I think they are adorable and understand how some siblings just can't be separated.
Fantastic that they can have such functional prostheses. They will do very well indeed. As long as they are not in pain, they will adjust without a hitch.
Great story. Thanks to Valhalla Rescue for their great work. I wish there was a 'share' button so I can put it on my page also.
@UDell55 @komonews so tired in the morning. do not know how the day will carry on.
I imagine it's taken a year to adopt them out because the canine rescue group is doing some serious vetting of the applicants. Â That can only be a good thing and in the meanwhile, they have a great home and great care.
@Annie Thank you Annie for understanding and you are so right. We do need to make sure that the home they go to is a lifetime home that is prepared for twice of everything. These guys are only a little over a year old and considering they can live for 15 or more years. We want to be sure that whoever offers them that forever home is ready for that length of commitment and are fully aware that even though they are adorable, they are specially-abled dogs and as such will need more than the average type of attention for their entire lives.
I don't know about these dogs, but there comes a time when keeping an animal alive is more cruel then putting them down.
@Jesse Brown I agree, but this certainly isn't one of those times. As a medical rescue we do have to make the type of decisions that others avoid, but Honey and Badger are not in any pain, discomfort or strain. They are happy, healthy and full of more life and love than most.  Thank you for watching them and seeing the joy for life that these 2 little creatures can inspire. I look forward to seeing many years of therapy work for these guys as they bring joy to others around the world.
Little cuties. Â They have a lot of heart, unlike whoever dumped them. Â
cute
That is adorable... but ... until my wife and I get a house with a yard over my current residence.... no pets as I honestly am never home
I wish we had the perfect setting for them. They are so cute. Praying the right person comes along soon to adopt them. Hey; what about KOMO Newsroom mascots???
Wow! Great job Patty Mauldin with Valhalla Canine Rescue!!! Beautiful dogs! We have a crazy, loving, hilarious, energetic little rescue terrier! Super dog. She thinks so too! We actually worry about her needing prognostics in the future due to inability to walk a straight line without falling over. Our clumsy little sweetheart! Â
I'm sure these two little cuties will find a wonderful home! Such precious additions to a loving home, and they will make great therapy dogs!!!
Great story!
@lovinTruth Thank you. We are a village of volunteers and we all work hard to ensure dogs are never euthanized for a treatable medical condition.
Never seen anything like it. Very cool! :)
Oh my gosh how cute!! They are adorable!! If I had the space and money to properly care for them I'd go gobble them up right now. I have 2, and while I have plenty of time and love to give, my fiances won't let me.
@ConniesPets @komonews dis Valhalla Rescue is da best place fur homeless furbabies before dae can get a furever home.... mom got some good
@ConniesPets @komonews advice from Patti back when I was rescued ... I wish I could of stayed dare instead of da Humane Soc until I went to
They are so cute. Wish I could take them.
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!?!?
Thank you for sharing Honey and Badger! Amazing little lovers! Thank you Valhalla Rescue for giving these dogs (and others) a great start onto their forever home!
I wish I had time to properly care for a dog! :(
Beautiful doggies. Someone will be very fortunate to have them both.
We got our dog from this rescue, Valhalla, and she is awesome. They do a great job finding homes for doggies in need. Thanks Komo for giving them some recognition!
@Elizabeth Shriner Thank  You Elizabeth for the kind words. How is your baby and I hope to come painting again soon.
Just watched the videos, they look adorable, friendly and very mobile even without the wheels.
@Deejay Mcallister They can REALLY move without their wheels and spend lots of time bouncing around the house, but they do need carpeted floors.Â
Great story!
Wish I could, but I have two as it is, that is the max I can handle in regards to time and costs. Â But I will share this on my page.
As I was watching this on the news last night, my 2 year old Lab mix walked up to the TV and went bonkers...
I think he was in love...<g>
they seem to have adapted to their wheels quite well!!
Honeybadger don't care!
Hey Auntie Sharon M Goodner and Uncle Chuck Goodner.....
...and "people" who toss animals in dumpsters...there isn't even a word for that.Â

@Steve98028Â @Hadrian They are talking about the Dalmatian in the story.
@Hadrian We agree, but we are so grateful for the person that found her and took her to the shelter so that she could find her way to us.  Thank you
@Hadrian Â
Scum?
Heartless?
Monster?
@Howard Beale Doesn't even begin to encompass it. :]
Anyone wishing to adopt these adorable little buggers: Keep in mind they are going to need a lot of extra care, love, and medical care. Someone will glady open their home to them, but you have to be prepared up-front for how much time they are bound to take, and adjustments you may have to make in your house, schedule, etc. A lot of people take in special needs rescues without realising the time, costs, and energy involved. This happens with horses too often.
*saunters off to check out that great dane*
@Hadrian Gosh.. thanks for discouraging people from rescuing these sweeties.  There is nothing physically wrong with them, other than needing those carts sometimes to get around. It's not as if they need future surgeries, or appear to have any other needs. Â
@Hadrian You are exactly right and that is part of the reason they have been in rescue for so long. We are making sure that people understand that this is a lifetime, maybe 15 year, commitment and that as they age there could be problems or complications related to their disability. Add that to the fact that we think they really would be wonderful therapy dogs and want to strongly encourage that and we have s combination for a very unique human companion.  It might take a while and we don't care, we have made the commitment to them and they have a ton of aunties and uncles that are willing to ensure they enjoy life in rescue to the fullest.
@Hadrian Maybe not - it's all they've ever known and they do well with or without the carts.  Our dachsund got paralyzed and used a cart, and the only modification for us was constantly putting him back in it because he became a little Houdini immediately.
They sure are cute!
@Doxie True, but you know how people are often quick to adopt the next cute thing they see, because she's cute (speaking from experience here. OMG KITTENS. BUNNY. TINY BITTY SNAKE.) . They may, or may not, need extra medical care in the future, and new families ought to be aware of that possibility.
@Hadrian @Doxie Of course......good point.
