PACIFIC, Wash. -- Dozens of people came out to a Friday night candlelight vigil to remember a 13-year-old Pacific boy who lost his life at the hands of a murderer.

Friends say Walter Denesha was a young man who dared to live his life differently, up until the very end.

"It's just so sad," one mourner said. "Losing a friend is terrible."

Police believe Denesha was murdered earlier this month by his sister's ex-boyfriend, Brandon Suhr. Investigators say Suhr, 19, came into the girl's home two weeks ago, fought with her and then stabbed her younger brother to death.

"He was trying to protect his sister and that is the most honorable thing a person could do," another mourner said.

Denesha's death has been hard on teenagers in Pacific, especially his former classmates at Mt. Baker Middle School.

"It's just incredible to see the community come together like this," said friend and organizer Jaclyn Leibrant.

Denesha's friends showed up in blue t-shirts, and some with blue hair, the way he wore his and the way his sister says he would have wanted it.

"Don't forget this," his sister said. "Don't forget that Walter stood out. I stand out all the time. Just don't let people change who you are."

Suhr remains in jail on $1 million bail. He faces possible charges of first degree burglary, kidnapping and murder.
