Elderly woman hit by car in Federal Way

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- An elderly woman was rushed to Harborview Medical Center Monday evening after being hit by a car in Federal Way.
Police say the woman, who is in her 80s, was hit by a vehicle in the 1400 block of South 312th Street at roughly 5:20 p.m.
She was taken to the Harborview with life-threatening injuries.
The driver was not injured and remained at the scene until police arrived. The Federal Way Major Accident Investigation Team is looking into the crash, but so far nothing indicates the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to police.
Westbound South 312th Street is closed to traffic between Pacific Highway South and 14th Avenue South while police investigate the crash.

This is horrible but this occurred in the middle of the road and not in a crosswalk... I have almost hit people as I have not seen them as they were where they were not supposed to be. Every driver has had one of those situations at one point or another. I hope the lady recovers but at her age this is likely to affect her for the rest of her life as we all also know our ability to heal disappears with age... the years this lady has left will likely be very painful ones but I cannot and nor should anyone else hold a grudge against the person who hit her .. it was a accident caused by the individual that was hit as they were walking where they were not supposed to be crossing... and at that hour it is asking for trouble.
Eighty year old woman next to H-Mart? Why didn't her grandchildren or kids drive her to the store? That's not a good area for walking.
I live just down the street. When I got home last night, the emergency vehicles were there. It appears that the incident took place on 312th BETWEEN HWY 99 and 14th. There is no street intersection there...just the driveway to the shopping area...andd that means anyone standing in the roadway was jaywalking. Additionally, there is an awkward turning lane coming out of H-Mart to make a left onto 312th. There was a time when that was a prohibited turn, but the shops don't want to stop people from being "inconvenienced" and people don't always obey the sign that says, "no left turn between 3 and 6 pm."   If someone were trying to make that turn and was in the middle of the street as traffic was coming through (and I see the picture shows the red vehicle in exactly that position), it would make it even more difficult to see a jaywalker. This is VERY common on that section of 312th and there are LOTS of elderly people in the area as well. People just don't want to go to the corner to the crosswalk. In the dark, it's just begging for trouble. I've nearly hit two people there. On the other hand, as a pedestrian, I've nearly been mowed down when using the crosswalk at 14th & 312th...
I'm having a hard time making out the crosswalk........
This is the second driver tonight to hit a pedestrian. The other driver was high on pot but yet this driver wasn't on any substance. Seems that accidents DO happen and CAN'T always be avoided. (This is to those who were bashing the marijuana driver saying that "This accident could have been avoided." If that was the truth, why wasn't this one avoided?)

I give the elderly woman my best wishes for a full recovery.
