Family of hit-and-run victim: 'We just hope justice will prevail'
ANACORTES, Wash. -- Parents of a motorcyclist killed in a hit-and-run crash in Anacortes Tuesday mourned the loss of their son and say they hope justice is served against the woman who allegedly hit him.
Troopers say the 23-year-old motorcyclist, Michael McCurdy, was slowing down to avoid a collision ahead of him in the eastbound lanes of State Route 20 at Fidalgo Bay Road when he was hit from behind by another car.
The woman driving the car that hit him did not stop and sped away from the scene, Trooper Keith Leary said. The impact from the crash knocked the motorcyclist off his bike and into the road, where he was hit by another car. Leary said the driver of that vehicle did stop.
Officials said the driver who sped away eventually called a tow truck for her damaged vehicle but did not call 911 to get help for the motorcyclist.
Paramedics eventually were called and got McCurdy to the hospital Tuesday night still alive, and his dad and mom were at his bedside when he died early Wednesday morning.
"God knows we had tears in our eyes as we held his hand and watched him take his last breath," said Randy McCurdy, Michael's father.
The family's grief deepened when troopers told them the driver of the car that allegedly hit their son just kept on going.
"We believe she knew what happened," Randy McCurdy said. "(She) didn't call 911, she left the scene... with basically no regard as to what occurred."
Michael McCurdy's relatives are relieved officers arrested the suspected driver, 26-year-old Gisela Carmona-Moreno. However, they now struggle with their feelings toward the suspect.
"We just hope that justice will prevail and that, God willing at some point in our lives, we can forgive her for taking our son's life," Randy McCurdy said.
A fluke of luck led troopers to the car. The license plate from the car that first hit McCurdy was ripped off by the impact and was found at the crash scene, Leary said. Troopers spotted the car a short time later as it was being towed down a road in Anacortes.
They suspect the driver and possibly her family may have been trying to hide the damaged sedan.
"The reasoning she gave us that I can share with you is that she was scared, and that's why she left the scene," Leary said.
Randy McCurdy says his son loved spending time with family and working out. Adopted as a cocaine-addicted baby, the young man eventually blossomed.
"He quickly overcame that and became a very outstanding individual," Randy McCurdy said of his son. "Very loving, and people absolutely loved him."
Gisela Carmona-Moreno, was booked into the Skagit County Jail for investigation of hit-and-run and is being held on $100,000 bail.

Well Mr. Lull not all ilegal aliens are criminals did you know that? Maybe you should go down to mexico and see what they are runing away from. Im pretty sure if drug cartels ran the U.S we would be trying to find a safer place. Our perfect little lives are nothing compared to what imigrants have to go through. Cuz we have it all, and yett we still complain about imigrants steeling our jobs? Ok im pretty sure most americans would never even think about working in the fields. I know many that do but they do it because they are poeple that like to work and help there workers. But nothing now a days will change peoples mind on what they think about imigrants, they are all just a bunch of "criminals"
It would be very enlightening to hear all of the 911 tapes for that night. All of the callous people that just drove past without stopping before Michael was hit the second time should also feel ashamed. What a tragedy, made worse by careless people. More could have been hurt or killed in this accident.Â
Â
When you see flashing lights, pay attention!
Making a point that she is illegal is just making a point that she is a criminal. She was trying to protect her illegal status and have other legal members of her family do the same by hiding her car. Do illegal aliens that are charged with felonies generally do their time or just get shipped home? Thats why this is a huge deal. CRIMINALS HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR ACTIONS.
People also need to get there facts right before Saying shes an illeagal Alien/monster. This could happen to anybody not just ileagal aliens. If she were Drunk or under the influence it would have been a whole diffrent story. I'm not saying shes not guilty but its sad to see how much hate people have twards imigrants. People here are starting to throw anger at her just because it states that the us border patrol has her case?
Idk if people are being racist or jugmental. It seams like only Micheals family knows whats going on for this is why they have hope for god to give them strenght to forgive her. I admire her his family as well as him. Not knowing them they still seem like an admireable Fam. My prayers for Michael's family and Michael that is now in a beter place.
People here are judging her without knowing her side of the story. Not everyone will act the same in a situation like this. Logicly the right thing to do is stop and ask for help, but a woman most of the time will freak out and completley loose it. No were here does it say it was her fault. They need to put her side of the story too. People here are just to judgemental this is why our society is what it is right now. May you rest in peace Micheal M.
@Hey23 you're saying everyone is being judgemental, but you were just being sexist. Just because "'women' freak out and completely loose it", that is not an excuse for what happened. Also, not only is it LOGICALLY right to stop, it's LEGALLY, MORALLY, and HUMAN to stop and make sure that someone is Okay. By the way, it's a little obvious that something isn't right when you just flea a scene, especially if you committed it. Bottom line, people need to own up to the actions they do, regardless if they are illegal, male, female, etc.
There is a lot of speculation based on good evidence that she is being held on possible immigration violations.Â
Â
Maybe KOMO could pick up a phone and do some investigating.Â
Â
Honestly, KOMO, what are you afraid of?Â
My deepest condolences go out to the McCurdy family. This was a very tragic loss. My family was involved in the situation and got Michael to stop just before hitting the deer in the road. It just amazed me that my family had the road lit up with their high beams, hazard lights on, and were standing in the road waving frantically at people to slow down and stop and yet no one paid any attention to them. So many car drove past before and after Michael was hit and one car even had enough nerve to put their window down and yell at my brother (who is a fire fighter) to get out of the road as he was trying to assist Michael after he got hit. Just ridiculous the way that people have to regard to anything. If any of these people would have just paid attention to all the warning signs things would be different. My prayers go out to the McCurdy family. May God bless them in this time! Always and forever!!
@Chaka Babarovich Thank you to your family for stopping.  Thank you to your family for your prayers.  Thank you to your brother for assisting my nephew.  That is all I can say right now.  Thank you.
@Shenna  @Chaka Babarovich My heart is with you and your family. Michael was beautiful.Â
Chaka Babarovich, you are a wonderful human being, I wish there were more like you, my prayers to you also, what a tragic event. Heal well.
We love you Michael. Our whole community is feeling such a deep sense of loss, we are all in a fog. You will never be forgotten; your legacy is eternal. Our hearts go out to Michael's family.
RIP Brother.
No cagers, and the sun is always shining where you're riding.
First off my thoughts go out to the family and friends that have suffered this tragic loss. I donât know if the driver âfor sureâ was here illegally, but every indication so far show she was. Either way legal or not she committed a crime and she should be held accountable to the highest punishment for that crime.
So sad..Condolences to the family and friends. Michael McCurdy sounded like a wonderful young man that many will miss.

@Egghead @CIAassassin  Read the comment more closely. CIAassassin is saying you should always stay at the scene, because if you do so, things will be fine -- unless you're drunk, then things will not be fine because you will be charged with DUI, etc. CIAassassin is not saying stay at the scene unless you're drunk.
Why on earth would his family member say that he hopes some day to be able to "forgive" her? Why would anyone forgive her? Just stupid talk.
@Donacita Michael would have wanted them to forgive her.Â
@Donacita Carrying hatred around with you forever is like giving those you hate a rent free apartment in your head/heart and does far more damage to you than it does the object of your hate. You should forgive others so that you can live a better life.
@Donacita Forgiveness is empowering. This is clearly a kind and decent family who lost their son and seeks the best way forward in this terrible circumstance. They don't want to live lives of bitterness and I suspect that is why they hope to be able to forgive her someday. We can all learn from the McCurdy family. All the best to them.
@Bob Fuller  @Donacita Very well said. I never understood it until I did it. I forgave the mother who killed my daughter's best friend. Took years..it took a huge weight off of my shoulder's. She will bear her's for life. She killed her child. I was then allowed to grieve properly and remember my "kid" as the wonderful person she was. I was able to help my daughter with her anger, and she is more important than my "rage", she's more important than anything.
That being said, just because I forgave her doesn't mean I don't want to beat the S@#% out of her..does that make sense?
It's the first time I did it, now I have a few to go..
My heart goes out to the McCurdy family and all of his friends. He was beautiful.
@This_again?  @Yeah_and you are right, maybe I just took a step? Doesn't make sense..I'll keep trying.
@Yeah_and Seems like you missed the message of forgiveness. "That being said, just because I forgave her doesn't mean I don't want to beat the S@#% out of her..does that make sense?"Â No, doesn't make sense.
Gisela, you are a sad excuse for a human being. I hope the Judge who hears your case locks you up for a very long time so you are forced to reason with the pain and heartache you have caused this family for the rest of their time on earth. Only a monster would leave someone to die like that.
Â
May you never set foot behind the wheel of a moving vehicle for the rest of your life.
Â
Â
@skepticaloptimist She is now being held by INS and most likely will be deported and nothing will be charged.
@Chaka Babarovich  @skepticaloptimist If all they do is deport her, she will be back here very soon. She committed a crime. She should have to serve the sentancem and THEN be deported. And check out her family, too...they were aiding her, and some are probably also illegals.
All I hear from her & her family is "ME,ME,ME". What's up with some people now a days? My God!!
@Gigi Have you been living under a rock? Do you read?
@Gigi Some people? Its about 75% of the population. Hardely anyone is accountable for their actions anymore.Â
"officer's arrested the suspected driver, 26-year-old Gisela Carmona-Moreno."
Â
If the driver is here illegally then this young mans parents should sue the ever living crap out of the US government, specifically naming one Barack Hussein Obama, et al, for failure to uphold the laws of the United States and in so doing intentionally putting at risk the safety of US citizens and legal residents.
@ByeByeBarry please do some googling: Obama is responsible for record numbers of deportations. Just because he hasn't built a 40' fence surrounding every city and demanding that all people carry and show their papers and whatever other dark fantasies you have, doesn't make him responsible for this tragedy.
Um yeah, because there have NEVER been any people here illegally before Obama's administration. Filing a lawsuit against the gov't has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
@hrhkellyb You haven't read too many of his comments then if that's the dumbest one you've seen.Â
@ByeByeBarry I'll bet in your little dark world everyone not named Smith or Jones is an illegal alien ROFL
It must suck being you
@Larry*X*K  @ByeByeBarry She is an illegal. Check the jail roster. She's on hold for border patrol.
@Larry*X*K @ByeByeBarry Barry was right.
As a victim of a recent hit and run myself I have an extreme amount of anger for our justice system in the case of hit and run drivers. Â In my situation I had my 7 year old son in the car with me scared to death of what was happening luckily for me there were multiple witnesses that stayed behind to help and With only the small amount of information that was gathered by them (for which i am forever grateful towards) I was actually able to track down the driver myself and all he faces now is a traffic ticket for running a red light and misdemeanor hit and run, which carries very little if any jail time. Â Then come to find out that same weekend caused another accident also a hit and run and 2 weeks after that he went head on to another vehicle under the influence of drugs and alchohol might i add, causes very serious injuries and still to this day is free from jail. Â I'm sure in the last accident had he not been injured himself or still had a working car he would have ran again. Â More often than not people are leaving the scene of an accident for one reason or another be it they are under the influence or just scared of the punishment they may receive from causing an accident without a single care in the world for the person they have hit, no reason is good enough to leave an accident. Â A hit and run in any circumstance whether it causes death or minor injuries there should be a lot harsher punishment than one if the driver stays and assists the victim. Â No normal law abiding citizen is going to leave an accident unless there is something to hide. Â I am so sorry for this victims family and friends and I hope for some peace in their future and assurance that this person wont be causing this kind of pain to any other family!!
@amber98201 I would love to have his information..NOT that I would hurt the guy..just you know..talk to him or something..probably good that I don't. I am angry for you, sorry you had to go through that.
Still wish I knew who he was...superhero time.
@Yeah_and As I stated above, seems like you still have alot of hate in your heart Yeah_and.
@This_again?  @Yeah_and Glad you laughed!! Also I'm glad we could have a nice conversation, I'm always open for constructive criticism..like my counselor said "progress not perfection" when I went in all stressed out because I couldn't figure out how to "find inner peace"..he said only I would freak out trying to do that..lol.
@Yeah_and LOL, just reads that way... I also use to harbor hate, I have learned to let it go unless I want ulcers. ;-)
@This_again?  @Yeah_and No not hate, just gallows humor..and I speak what I think at the time, no filter..
I could see why you think that. But I don't have hate in my heart..get angry like anybody else, I've worked hard and I can say I have never "hated". I have and will continue to be a better person every day.Â
Have a good day This_again?.

Just the facts. Â I say, if she is convicted, put her away for a long time and then deport her and anyone who helped her. Â
Â
Time to start rounding them up. Â IMHO
@nokoolaid4me Great work! I always say that..but I mean it. I do this now on the side for people..I'm currently trying to find a license plate with a name only..kind of reverse plate search..taking days.Â
That was awesome.
@nokoolaid4me So this was an illegal. Notice how our media never reports this important fact?
@mrmytwocents  @nokoolaid4me Don't get me wrong, I'm every bit as tired of illegal aliens as you are... but WHERE do you see that this woman is an illegal alien??? The arresting agency being Border Patrol does not automatically mean the suspect is an illegal alien....
@nokoolaid4me The hold is to VERIFY her status. It doesn't necessarily mean she IS illegal (though I have little doubt about it.)
@DrugFighter  @mrmytwocents The arresting agency was the WSP.  The Border Patrol put a hold on her.  Wake up!
 @DrugFighter  @mrmytwocents  @nokoolaid4me Very true. I suppose they'll find out.
@nokoolaid4me Everything you posted is a matter of public record. Hopefully KOMO will not delete your post. You come the closest to actually acting like a journalist.Â
I think that the hit and run penalty should be the same as if a person were impaired. If they knew they were not going to get off any lighter by running, maybe they wouldn't run.Â
