The pickup was mangled in the crash.
CHEHALIS, Wash. - A father and son were killed Thursday morning when their pickup crashed into a semi truck that was stopped at the end of a traffic backup on Interstate 5, the Washington State Patrol reported.

State troopers were dispatched to the scene, south of Chehalis, at about 8:20 a.m.

An investigation found that a 1998 Toyota T-100 pickup was traveling north on I-5 behind a 2008 Kenworth semi truck with a flatbed trailer.

The semi stopped at the very end of a four-mile traffic backup on northbound I-5 caused by an earlier rollover crash in involving another semi truck, but the pickup did not stop. It slammed into the back of the semi's flatbed trailer.

The driver of the pickup, Anatoliy P. Kovalchuk, 43, of Vancouver, was pronounced dead at the scene, along with his son, 15-year-old Mark Kovalchuk, who was riding as a passenger in the pickup.

Neither victim was wearing a seat belt.

An investigation into the crash continues.
