Federal judge signs off on SPD reform plan
SEATTLE -- The Seattle Police Department's reform plan passed another major milestone Tuesday as a federal judge signed off on the changes.
A Department of Justice monitor filed the plans a week ago. It's part of the city's settlement with the DOJ over officers' use of force.
The Seattle Police officers' union plans to fight the changes, partly because its not getting a say on how the new rules are implemented.
"What we need to do is to get everyone together: the city attorney, the mayor, both unions, the monitoring team, the Department of Justice," said Rich O'Neil, president of the Seattle Police Officer's Guild. "Let's all get in the same room and let's work it out."
As part of the monitoring plan, SPD has to add more supervisors, require more mandatory training, and change the way the department reacts to claims of too much force.

Let me get this straight, "The Seattle Police officers' union plans to fight the changes, partly because its not getting a say on how the new rules are implemented." Â Who the hell does this union think they are! Â They enforce the laws on people and dish it out, (often brutally) but they cannot take it. God how I hate the SPD!
If the Seattle Police Officer's Guild plans to fight the changes, then THEY should have to pay all the costs associated with it.Â
You had your chance to work it out...you failed. Now it's time to do as you're told.
Having Rich O'Neil, and the Seattle Police Officer's Guild in the room to work it out is equivalent to having the fox guard the hen house.
LOL, I wonder how many millions the city will loose in a law suit with the guild because that fat slob of a mayor won't stand up to minority groups. Couldn't happen to a better city.
I would suspect that the Mayor, City Council and DOJ really could careless on what you think Mr. O'Neil since your part of the problem...

Rich, what part of a Federal Judge ordered that you comply with the therms of the settlement dont you understand. There is no "working it out" There is only "You will comply" DEAL WITH IT!
Good. Â It's about time that the corrupt idiots like Powell get their hand held.
However the silly, goofy police union saying they don't get a say in what reforms are implemented is the same thing as me grounding my son and him saying "Well let's negotiate what my punishment is".
You guys decided to be scum, dirt bag examples of "Seattle's finest" and now that you are being held accountable you want to dictate what new rules are enforced? Â
If you guys could do that to begin with then the DOJ wouldn't have needed to step in morons!
Granted not all of the SPD are scumbags, but the ol' saying "one bad apple ruins a bushel" fits nicely.
And for something as heavy as the DOJ stepping in it was A LOT more than "one bad apple".
@TJM Go ahead and show the proof. Komo didn't nor did the DOJ. Of course you sheep believe anything the news throws in front of you.
