State troopers investigate at the scene of the crash.
AUBURN, Wash. - A suspected drunk driver who fled from state troopers shot himself to death as the chase came to an end early Wednesday on Highway 167 in Auburn.

The drama began at about 1 a.m. when troopers spotted a car weaving down Highway 167 near South 180th Street in Renton, said a Washington State Patrol spokesperson.

When troopers attempted to pull the car over, the driver took off down the highway. Troopers later flattened the car's right-side tires with a spike strip near South 277th Street, but the driver kept going.

As the car approached 15th Street NW in Auburn, the driver swerved left, went into median and crashed into a barrier.

Troopers approached the car and found the driver slumped over the wheel, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The driver was later identified as a 34-year-old Renton man.
