Furniture donated in Spokane came with bedbugs

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Mike Chapman was grateful for the donated furniture he and his fiance received after a fire last June destroyed their apartment in Spokane.
But not long after they moved their three children to a new place, they discovered they had bedbugs.
KREM reports they threw out the furniture, laundered all their clothes and moved again. But they still had bedbugs, which are notoriously hard to eradicate.
Pest control company EnviroPro came to the rescue. Operator Raymond VanderLouw donated an extermination as part of a national charitable event called "Taking the bite out of the holidays."

You can't risk picking up or buying used furniture anymore. More good advice on how to prevent bed bugs in âThe Bed Bug Survival Guideâ: them:http://failuremag.com/feature/article/dont_let_the_bed_bugs_bite/
I feel horrible for this family but they seriously over reacted to a bad situation and put themselves in a worse financial situation.
Food-Grade diatomaceous earth kills all insects by slicing up their exoskeletons when they crawl through it, including bedbugs. By encasing the mattresses, taping every little crack and screw hole with masking tape and then using the DE powder around the beds you will control any infestation. If it is in upholstered furniture you need to powder bomb the heck out of it as well, inside the furniture and underneath of it. Then apply a liberal amount of powder along the walls.
Here is the thing that most people just don't understand about bedbugs...They don't stay in the bed during the day people!!! They only come to the bed at night because they are nocturnal feeders and that is where WE are at night! During the day they will have find somewhere away from activities and light to hide away. You have to make it so they crawl through the powder to get to YOU.
It's non-toxic, safe to consume for pets and humans, hypo-allergenic and extremely affordable.
We found all of this out the hard way when we allowed a close friend to move in with us from out of state and it wasn't just him that moved in! I guarantee that those little horror monsters are long gone now and we didn't use any of those nasty horrid chemicals either!
Found that with the recent increase in bedbugs overall, many places aren't taking mattress/boxspring pieces anymore. Be very wary out there...
I'm sorry to hear about this, its unfortunate especially for a family relying on donations. I wish KOMO/AP/KREM could also report any way to assist them since they obviously rely on donations.
