Going too far? Ore. school disciplines kids for imaginary sword fight

HILLSBORO, Ore. – Two 7-year-old boys got in trouble at school after using imaginary weapons at recess. Now the family of one of the boys disciplined said the whole thing was blown out of proportion.
The kids were copying a computer game where players fight off zombies.
They used "air" swords and axes to pretend to stab each other, but they didn't have anything in their hands – not even a stick. Still, the Hillsboro School District said it was inappropriate.
But Ronald Doney, the grandfather of one of the boys, said he doesn't get it.
"Society is getting out of hand. They aren't letting kids use their imagination," he said.
Doney's grandson, Kaden, was sent to the principal's office at Butternut Creek Elementary School for pretending to fight with a friend. They were emulating the video game Minecraft.
The game is about building structures and protecting them from monsters, but the Hillsboro School District doesn't allow that type of play – not even at recess.
"Students have been asked not to do that," said spokeswoman Beth Graser. "These students in particular have been spoken to on multiple occasions about this specific type of behavior."
Graser said with only a couple of supervisors and dozens of students, it's tough to tell what's real and fake.
"In some ways I do (see the district's perspective)," Doney said. "But there's a point where kids don't play anymore. It's kinda sad – seven year olds, they just want to play."
"You are definitely going to have kids with their imaginations and wanting to replicate things they've seen," Graser said. "That's perfectly natural, and I think just trying to give consistent reinforcement as to what the expectations are and what some better ideas may be."
She feels the punishment fits.
"The consequence is a loss of a 15-minute recess. That's probably pretty appropriate," she said.
Doney disagrees. He feels it's confusing for the kids to play one way at home and another at school.
"They've carried it too far," he said. "I could understand if there were sticks involved or something like that."
The district's handbook doesn't have an explicit policy about imaginary fighting. It only talks about weapons. But Graser feels the district is consistent and clear on the issue.
A quote from http://www.creativitypost.com/education/the_need_for_pretend_play_in_child_development
"A school atmosphere in which pretend games are encouraged, or even just tolerated in the curriculum or recess play of children has also been shown to lead to even greater amounts of imaginativeness and enhanced curiosity, and  to learning skills in preschoolers or early school-agers (Ashiabi , 2007; Singer and Lythcott 2004)"
You think that these two youngsters give a crap about some nutty teachers?
Everyone over 20 who has never "pretend" sword fight raise your hand. This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. The kids talk "bitch slap" but they can't fake a sword fight? Christmas memories, sword fighting with the empty rolls from Christmas wrap.
Have you ever watched kittens play? Too violent for you? Guess what, pretend "biting your ear off" hardly ever resulted in bitten off ears. Our cats are adult now, they still play pretend rough housing games, but never hurt each other.
Â
Got it? Ok, group hug!
"You are definitely going to have kids with their imaginations and wanting to replicate things they've seen," Graser said. "That's perfectly natural, and I think just trying to give consistent reinforcement as to what the expectations are and what some better ideas may be."
Sounds to me like brainwashing, or programming..is what the schools want to do now.. not teach..
Two words "Star Wars".
I think that we may have reached a point where we should all agree that as a society we have become hypersensative. Really what makes this news worthy?
Â
"The consequence is a loss of a 15-minute recess. That's probably pretty appropriate"
Â
two kids that have been warned in the past of that this type of play is not acceptable and fail to comply so they lose a whole 15 minutes of recess and it makes the news. Give me a freakin' break!
 @Justaguy why is it unacceptable?
who knows and who cares. The school has rules, these rules were explained to the boys and they chose to disobey them so they got in trouble and had to have a 15 minute timoe out.
Â
Allowing this to be on the news is clearly making a mountain out of a mole hill. If the parents have a huge problem with the rule then they simply need to work it out with the school administration.
Society IS getting out of hand. We're completely afraid of our own shadows at this point. Instead of homes people are going to start buying bunkers with food and weapon stockpiles. We're completely losing our minds in America. This is WAY out of control!
I can't believe we made it !!

@Gaikokujin Txs!!!!!!!!!! I posted it to FB!!
@Gaikokujin TOTALLY EXCELLENT LINK!!  Thank you so much for posting it.  It was exactly want I needed to see.  I liked it so much I'm going to email the link to all my friends & family.
I think maybe they should be more concerned about other things than normal play between kids. Kids like to pretend and that's all this was PRETEND. Let the kids be kids for crying out loud, their childhood won't last forever.
I think the intent is to create a generation of sissy wimps. If your kids learn more from school than you - You fail.
I remember when I was in elementary school we would wrestle around during recess along with sword fight with sticks. What in the hell is going on with the way our country going? Kids cannot be kids anymore along with being coddled and protected from every living thing in this world. My parents raised me right, gave me space the older I got and didn't freak out when I exhibited behavior that would be considered dangerous by today's standards.Â
@Aaron Corbin Aaron, this says it quite well.

Retarded white people strike again................
@quinoline2 Well, based on your comment, you certainly just proved that you can be retarded not by your skin color, but what you say.
@quinoline2 Stupid bigoted people such as yourself is one of several reasons why violence is so prevalent in our country today. Â
Fencing and Jousting used to be mainstream....not so much anymore. Kind of like Dodgeball.
@FED__UP Do kids even PLAY dodgeball anymore? I thought some loon got it pulled from gym classes because it was too "violent." *sigh* I loved dodgeball when I was a kid.
@Harley-H.S.C.  @FED__UP Yes. But they don't use rubber playground balls anymore. They make actual balls for dodgeball and they are a hard foam. They still can hurt, but they don't fly as fast so not as bad.
@Harley-H.S.C.  @FED__UP Adults do - and it HURTS!  I wonder if you'd like it now, I sure changed my mind after a little tournament.  Ouch.
I cannot believe you ninnies at KOMO even put a question mark on the headline. Anyone who doubts that this school wasn't wildly out of line shouldn't be in journalism
@Iconoclast I wouldn't give them that much credit. This is more pseudo-journalism than journalism.
Tower of Babel. There's a communication problem. Maybe it's just laziness, I don't know. It seems there is some confusion about the definition of some words that get tossed around frequently. Such as "Liberal", I don't think too many people really understand who falls under that, or "Conservative". How about Semite? I'm fairly certain it includes those also known as Palestinians. Words have been taken and twisted, in the case of Semite it was flat out stolen. Maybe it makes it easier to cast baseless accusations and slurs on others. Laziness? A lousy education? Please take a little time to track down and identify before blurting out nonsense.
@uscit16791949 The majority of those that call themselves liberals are really just progressives. Part of the effort to cloak socialism in a facade acceptable to Americans.
@Iconoclast Damn, someone who actually knows American history!  :)
@jowsuf  @Iconoclast I wish that was true in my PolySci classes when I went to college.  My professor was the quintessential stereo type complete with Birkenstocks.Â
@Iconoclast I don't understand the hate on Howard Zinn. He doesn't rewrite American history, he just refuses to sugarcoat it and pretend everything we've ever done has been patriotic and honorable. Reality is what it is. Zinn at least clearly states that he is throwing in his point of view, and he in no way tried to cover that fact up. It's very apparent when he writes about historical fact versus his opinion. I just don't understand why people don't think it's important to view history critically instead of trying to paint a pretty picture. Cynicism gets annoying, but it's a little bit of playing devil's advocate while looking at history. I think that's an important side of things to consider. That's my opinion, anyway.
Â
Don't judge Zinn by what partisan critics say. Read his work and decide for yourself. By the way, I have two friends who majored in history at WWU and they didn't read any Zinn or anything like it. Most history professors know better. The whole liberal college professor pushing his views nonsense is a bit exaggerated.Â
@Iconoclast Oh yeah, I know the new term for that!  It's called an Algoreism.
@K. Coleman Much of my family and a number of friends grew up in the the former USSR and they are extremely concerned with what they see happening in the USA. They understand propaganda and requirements to say one thing while believing/knowing another--something that all statist ideologies require. They also understand the casual brutality of the bureaucracy--though at least in the USSR ordinary people could bribe bureaucrats. In the USA one has to be very rich to bribe the politicians who then force bureaucrats to behave how they wish.
@Iconoclast The political pendulum swings back and forth.  I'm afraid one fine morning in the not too distant future some of these naive and ignorant* people are going to become a little more introspective and honest with themselves and say, "What the HE** did I do?" and, "How did I allow myself to become such a willing pawn in their power grab".  The Communists had a term for them, "Useful idiots".
Â
You and I both know they saying, "Those ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it." Â Could this be WHY the school system is doing such a lousy job of it.
Â
I once talked with a friend of my parents, a lady who grew up in Germany before WWII, she is alarmed with what she sees... in her words, "History is repeating it's self." Â The problem is, now, like then, nobody wants to admit it or even entertain the possibility.
Â
Â
*Ignorant does NOT mean stupid, just uneducated.
@K. Coleman And is why the left will fight vouchers with its last breath. Indoctrinating children is critical to their continued success.
Â
You do have to hand it to the Left from a strategic perspective. For the last 4 decades they have had a consistent strategy of conquering our institutions from the inside. This Long March through the institutions has been a tremendous success. A good example of that success can be seen by a socialist "economist" teaching economics at Seattle Central Community College. That is rather like a Christian Scientist teaching a surgical course.
@Iconoclast Yup, many people feel the exact same way.  I guess that is why home schooling is gaining popularity.  Also why the Libs hate private schools so much...
@K. Coleman Studied it before the left took the subject over and starting ramming vile propaganda from the likes of Zinn down student's throats.
Â
But I still remember my shock at encountering a government teacher who taught his students that Woodrow Wilson was one of our greatest presidents. Stunned me into silence that anyone could convince themselves that an incompetent racist and statist would be considered anything other than mediocre. For comparison, imagine someone claiming that Jimmy Carter was a great president (though at least Jimmy was less racist and more respectful of the Constitution than Wilson).
@Iconoclast  @uscit16791949 I'm a Progressive and proud of it. But I'm as far away from a Socialist as you could ever imagine. You've been watching too much Faux News. Get off your butt, turn off the TV and get out into the real world. Maybe you'll learn something.
@ferryguy Progressives are a little closer on the statist spectrum to fascists than socialists. Just different markings on the same beast though. Do a little research of your own on the repugnant history of progressives in this country.
I swear, I'm going to arrange a massive cowboys and indians finger gun fight with the kids at my kids school.... just to give the administrators a stroke.
Â
I already got a panicked call, your son use a finger gun!!!!!
@JCM1776 Be careful, the FBI is probably now watching you because of that statement.
@JCM1776 Can you imagine if the kid had a rubber band on his finger?  It would make the NATIONAL NEWS!  It would be a TRAGEDY!
 @K. Coleman Assault rubber!
Losing one 15 minute recess...what's the fuss as "These students in particular have been spoken to multiple occasions about this particular behavior" and they continued to break the school rule. "No" means "No"!! but maybe there's little to no follow up at home."Helicopter Parents" in action again.
Â
Â
Â
You know, even though stories like these are manna for the instantly and perpetually outraged low info commenters on the internet, ALL of the stories have one thing in common. Â The kids were all repeatedly told to stop the behaviors. In every case like this, it sounds more like the kids were being obnoxious, and did whatever they wanted, even after being told to stop repeatedly. LIke the kid who was bullying a little girl, by pretending to shoot her in the head over and over. Even though the school staff told these kids in all the stories to stop, and do something else, they refused. Â THAT is where you get into trouble. Â Your whiney-ass parents don't need to go to the media if you get in trouble. Â No wonder kids are so messed up now. Â My parents would have asked me "Did the teacher tell you to stop?" Â Me: "well, yes." Then they'd say "then you should have stopped. Period. Now go to your room, you're grounded." Â They would not call the media if I got in trouble for breaking a rule repeatedly. Â Â Again, parents... really? Video games where kids learn to kill things? Â brilliant.Â
@DT They were P L A Y I N G at recess. Might as well tell them to stop being kids.
We have become a nation of ninnies. Today, thank a democRAT for wanting/allowing this stuff. And they'll tell you how free you are too. Seems just about anything goes for them. Wet a finger and throttle it into the air to see which way they go next. I see whimpy people
@Troglidite Don't vilify one group just because of your political bias. RepubliCONs do their own sort of damage.
Â
They govt wants a wimpy, limp wristed, soft-handed group of males in these next generations.
Why ?
Â
Â
@hardtowatchitfade Easier to control 'em.
