KELSO, Wash. – A Kelso police officer and a Cowlitz County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed an armed man during a shootout outside a home Saturday morning.
Police said the suspect was 26-year-old Jesse McMillan.
Kelso Police Officer Ralph Hines, 40, and Cowlitz County Deputy Sheriff Danny O'Neill, 63, shot McMillan. Hines is a 9-year veteran with Kelso police and O'Neill has been Deputy Sheriff for 7 years after previously serving with the Washington State Patrol for 34 years.
Kelso police responded to a hit-and-run crash in the 200 block of Northwest 8th Avenue at around 10 a.m. McMillan hit two parked cars and drove away from the scene, police said.
Officers tracked him to his mother's house where they believed he was hiding, according to police. Authorities determined that McMillan had a felony robbery warrant and they tried to convince him to come out of the house.
Police said at 10:45 a.m., McMillan came out and began shooting at police officers and deputies. A police officer and deputy returned fire, shooting and killing McMillan, Kelso Police Captain Darr Kirk said.
The Cowlitz County Coroner said McMillan died from "multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen."
Officer Hines and Deputy O'Neill are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure. Hines was shot in the leg, but was released from the hospital on Saturday.
"Our officers acted appropriately," said Kirk. "It's tragic, but they really responded appropriately."
A neighbor told KATU they heard at least a dozen shots. The Clark County Regional Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the shooting.
Police said McMillan's mother was home when he arrived at the house. Officers got her out of the house before the shooting started.
Many of McMillan's friends gathered at the scene Saturday afternoon.
"Everything he did he was passionate about," said McMillan's friend Ryan Connors.
Loren Reed said McMillan couldn't get the help he needed while he was in jail, or after he was released.
"He didn't deserve to be shot, he deserved to be on the mental health floor over there, getting back on his doses of medication," said Reed.
"We might all put on a tough exterior, but inside, his heart was huge," said Connors. "I guarantee it, he was scared."
KATU's Erica Nochlin contributed to this story.
I was a victim of Deputy O'Neill. He tazered me and wrestled me to the ground... I was in my car when he tazered me. I think that officer O'neill should have a reevaluation. He's had a lot of publicity recently. I am not for officer o'neill at all!
Once again, a mentally ill person with access to a gun.Â
Works for me. If you don't care about the safety of others, then certainly no one is going to care about yours. Willing to shoot? willing to die. Hopefully he has an estate that can repair the cars he damaged. Senselessness is no excuse to bring others down with you. You screw up, you pay. Society shouldn't have to pay your tab
Another dead zombie and another illegal gun off the streets. Good job LEOs!!!!
"the suspect came out and began shooting at police officers and deputies." Â What could he have possibly been thinking? Â Certainly not that this was going to end well.
Yep, this guy is definitely a Darwin Award Winner... Too Stupid To Live
@svensson Yep, saved us who pay taxes a ton of money removing himself from the gene pool.
@svensson You deserve to end up where this guy did because of your use of "Darwin". Â
@sfvcyco @svensson Either you've never heard of the 'Darwin Awards', which I doubt, or you somehow think that trying to elude the police and then busting out shooting was somehow intelligent.
And what's more 'Darwin-istic' than 'the lucky and smart live and the stupid and unlucky die'? McMillan was obviously in Column B of that equation.
I find it funny that all these "gangstas" get in these shoot outs, but they never can seem to kill anybody ! Maybe if you weren't holding the gun sideways. LMAO !Â
Way to think of your wife, and any family you had - cheers!
Speedy recovery to the officer injured. Sounds like a righteous shoot to me.
Comes out shooting, get what he deserved. Bye Bye I guess you won't be spending and time in jail. Great move saved the taxpayers a bunch of money.
I certainly hope the courts don't entertain any kind of lawsuit brought on by his family - I know, a pipe dream...
Life in our meth cities...
@Citizen#3457899654 I didn't see meth mentioned in the article. Care to point it out?
@tufa23 @Citizen#3457899654 The reporters don't always have all the facts. However if you knew anything about this guy you would know drugs were definitely involved.....again!
Glad the officer was not seriously wounded and hope the owners of the damaged parked cars have low deductibles. Â
Captain Kirk!!!!! Ha ha ha Â
I hope the wounded cop heals quickly!
Tragic. What's for lunch?
@HawkEye nice, internet tough guy. stay classy.
