I-5 lane closures could create traffic mess over 3-day weekend
The southbound lanes of Interstate 5 will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Tuesday.
SEATTLE - State transportation officials are urging motorists to plan now for major road congestion over the threee-day weekend, when crews close down all but one lane of southbound Interstate 5 through downtown Seattle.

Two of the three southbound lanes between the Convention Center and Interstate 90 will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Tuesday. Delays of up to 60 minutes are possible during that period.

The closure is necessary to fix four 50-year-old broken-down expansion joints, says the state Department of Transportation.

Access to and from I-90, Airport Way South, Fourth Avenue South and South Dearborn Street will remain open, but officials are suggesting that motorists use alternate routes, such as Highway 99 or Interstate 405.

To help ease congestion, the I-5 express lanes also will be open in the southbound direction Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
