'I didn't know if the shooter was going to come back'
ISSAQUAH, Wash. -- A neighbor who helped save a woman gunned down in a King County shooting spree recounted what happened as the gunman went into the victim's house.
Police say John McKay shot a man in Renton and injured two others, then went to his former mother-in-law's home in Issaquah, broke down the door and shot her too.
"I saw him walking into the front door," said Yury Colton.
Colton was leaving his home for a bike ride Saturday afternoon when he saw John McKay arrive at his neigbhor's home in the 13400 block of 209th Ave. SE.
"I was coming down my driveway on my bike and I waved at the guy and said, 'Hey, how are you doing?' " Colton said.
Colton says everything seemed normal and went on his way. A short time later he heard gun shots so he turned around, curious about what was going on.
"I see him chasing down the neighbor across her backyard and firing shots towards her," Colton said.
Sheriff's investigators say McKay kicked-in the front door of his former mother-in-law's home, chased her through the house then followed her into the backyard.
Colton called 911 and waited in some nearby bushes. Once McKay left, Colton ran to help his neighbor, who was unconscious, lying face-down on the ground.
"I put my hand on her back and noticed that she was still breathing," Colton said. "And then I asked... I told her who I was. 'Your neighbor and help's on the way.' "
Investigators say McKay came here after shooting his ex-wife's boyfriend at this home in Renton. The man is expected to survive. Deputies later found McKay dead inside his car in Skyway. They say he died from a gunshot wound.
"I was nervous because I didn't know if the shooter was going to come back," Colton said. "I was nervous for what happened to the neighbor -- just kind of did what good neighbors do."
Colton says his neighbor regained consciousness before emergency crews arrived. She had a scrape on her face and she'd been shot in the hand. She's now recovering at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Way to go Yury! You are a true hero!!!!!
Way to go Yury!!!!.
He looks like an older version of the King County Deputy Paul that was fired. Â

Opps... I mean Deputy Savage who was fired. Â
Â
As we all know that proven danger to the citizens deputy Paul has yet to be fired and the tax payers are still vulnerable to when this wonderful example of King County deputy's hurts another innocent citizen. Â
As usual your comment has nothing whatsoever to do with the story. I think you need to see a shrink.
@Vince thats ok, i think that he has some deep fetish for the cop uniforms. either that or the handcuffs. but, it is funny to read all of his comments though he is a keyboard commando.
Once again, we have here a man that was suicidal and was determined to take others with him. He was really no different than Josh Powell in that regard. The difference was that while Josh Powell had already been denied access to guns because of the dual investigations regarding his wife and his father, this clown had guns. Powell injured his children with a hatched and then killed them and himself in a fire, but did not have the means to force the CPS monitor into the death house as well and did not have means to go after any other relatives that he "blamed". This guy had the means for mayhem.
As I have repeatedly stated, a handgun is much more likely to be used to injure or kill oneself or one's relative(s) than to actually be used to defend same from a deadly attack. And people who count their sense of "security" by the hangun(s) they own are often prime candidates to use their gun to prove their "manhood".
Â
The neighbor is a true hero.
@JLS1950 I used to believe idiotic statements such as "As I have repeatedly stated, a handgun is much more likely to be used to injure or kill oneself or one's relative(s) than to actually be used to defend same from a deadly attack." But then I did independent reserch and found the contrary is actually the truth. It doesn't matter how many times you repeatedly state bs it's still bs and informed firearm owners will not cave in to the constant bleat of the sheep.
@Chris Yeriab Actually, Chris, the stats are quite clear. Of the roughly 30,000 annual firearm deaths in the USA, more than half are suicides alone. About 12,000 are homicides. The vast majority of murders in the USA involve guns and most people who are murdered by guns are not done so by strangers.Â
Â
Â
@caphillkid Actually there were 18,375 suicides by firearm in the US last year. Japan and United Kingdom have nearly twice the suicide rate as the US. Firearms are banned in both UK and Japan. So your lack of logic is shinning very clear. Like I stated above, take the emotion out and search the facts for yourself. Not one gun law has prevented a criminal use of a firearm. There are over 290,000,000 firearms in the US. If I believed that firearms were responsible, not evil people, we would have blood running in the streets. In 2009 there were 35,900 automotive fatalities and about 250,000,000 registered vehicles (including 2, 4, and multiple wheeled vehicles). Automobile use requires training, a license, and strict laws to ensure we are "safe". Which means that firearm deaths due to suicide and homicide occur less often than the very regulated motor vehicle use. I don't know how many suicides and homicides are the result of motor vehicle operation. I'd guess that the motor vehicle carnage is not the result of the criminal element. My point being that firearms are nothing more than a tool. Owning a tool does not make it dangerous - misuse of a tool is what makes it dangerous. So, if ya wanna take my gun give up your car!
@Chris Yeriab Please do share your research. Links to independent researchers, please. Until then, I'll subscribe to JLS's side. This country's fetish with guns is obscene. And the results are there for the whole world to see.
@DrugFighter @Chris Yeriab Well, I doubted the gun nuts knew anything so I did it myself. Found sources via Harvard (heard of 'em?). I've been reading sources and researching this topic for nearly 10 years. Go ahead and be lazy and don't look for yourself. Typical response from the hates gun side - spoon feed yourself 'cause you won't trust what I send you. I'm not a conservative, vote mostly democratic, college educated and before I found facts hated the idea of hand guns. I vote for gay marriage but don't have any "fetish" especially for tools (my daily carry hand gun is a self defense tool). Quite being emotional and go educate yourself.
Armed with a cellphone and still willing to help.... What an excellent neighbor and in my opinion extremely brave. Before the gun carrying folks tell their brave stories of how things would've been different.... not everyone wishes to own a gun. I carry concealed and this definitely is why.
@Funky-Munky  I also carry and I really could care less if others decide to or not. I do get tired of those who choose not to have anything to do with firearms demanding that everyone should follow their lead.Â
