Inslee, McKenna intensify rivalry in latest debate
SEATTLE (AP) - Washington's candidates for governor intensified their rivalry Thursday, quarreling in a tart debate that focused on economics while also straying into questions over personal integrity.
With just a week before ballots go out to voters, Democrat Jay Inslee and Republican Rob McKenna found little common ground, disagreeing on matters such as how to constrain state government, how to stir job growth and how to implement Obamacare.
Inslee said he'd like to find savings in health care growth and improve performance of state government. McKenna would take a more aggressive approach, explicitly capping spending growth in non-education parts of state budget at 6 percent per biennium, and he suggested Inslee's plan wouldn't work.
"It's going to take some real discipline in the budget," McKenna said.
Inslee shot back that McKenna was supporting a gimmick that would raise property taxes on some residents during a process in which the state would take charge of more funding of education while lessening the burden on local governments. While McKenna hasn't specifically outlined how his plan would work, he has generally endorsed proposals floated by state lawmakers from both parties.

Watch part 2 of the debate:
State economic leaders project that lawmakers will need to find some $1 billion in savings or cuts to properly balance the state budget in the next biennium. Because of a state Supreme Court ruling that determined the state isn't properly funding education, lawmakers are also looking to add another $1 billion to education in that next two-year budget cycle.
Both candidates expect the state to have growing revenues in the coming years and didn't think new taxes were needed. Inslee said part of his plan to fund education is based on stirring stronger job growth, which he would do by trying to cultivate some industries such as clean energy and life sciences much like the state previously did in aerospace and computers.
"We invent, we create and we build in the state of Washington," Inslee said.
McKenna questioned Inslee's targeted jobs plan, saying it would pick winners and losers. He made note of an Associated Press story this week that found Inslee had purchased stock in a solar company before aiding the industry in both a book and congressional action.
Inslee had said that he didn't see a conflict of interest, but McKenna hammered him on that point, saying it was a conflict of interest and that Inslee's new jobs plans would set the stage for more.
"All you have to do is be ethical to avoid conflicts of interest," McKenna said.
The Republican said his jobs plan would focus on lowering costs for businesses, saying that business leaders frequently complain about burdens in the state. Inslee countered by pointing to a report that found the state to be one of the country's most business-friendly.
Thursday's debate offered the candidates their most prominent stage yet, with the meeting airing live on several TV stations in the region and timed to draw in viewers who had tuned in earlier in the night to the vice presidential debate. The candidates didn't disappoint, laying out competing visions in which there was rarely agreement:
- On the issue of President Barack Obama's health care law, Inslee said implementation was necessary in order to avoid the hidden cost of having uninsured people getting treatment in emergency rooms. McKenna urged caution before expanding Medicaid under the law, arguing that the state may be left on the hook with costs it can't shoulder.
- On the issue of gay marriage, McKenna said he wouldn't vote to have it. Inslee is supporting it.
- On the issue of legalized marijuana, a proposal that Washington voters will decided on this year, Inslee said he would work to defend the decision of voters. McKenna questioned the consequences, noting that the federal government may take action and that the law could threaten the state's existing medical marijuana system.
McKenna and Inslee are locked in what is widely considered one of the most competitive races for governor in the country. Both sides have raised about $10 million, and outside groups are also flooding the state with cash, trying to influence the election's outcome.
A recent Elway Poll showed the candidates running about even. The candidates are set to debate one more time next week.

Washingtonians don't participate in their governments in a way that will make our taxpayer funded works smart & healthy ones. Half in Washington State do not vote. The half that do vote are not informed. Washingtonians know about.3% of what we need to know in order to have smart, healthy government.Â
Â
What we do here is respond to non facts. Propaganda, partisan hackery.Â
Â
It's unfortunate that America is so incapable of doing what is best, over & above party affiliation.Â
Â
I was a republican until Romney became their nominee. Now, I have no party. But I still believe that Washington State & America can recover. We the People feel it that our lives are fading. We are aroused to put forth some effort. But we got here because Washington State & in fact America is devoid of facts, & truth about where our taxpayer moneys are going, & who takes them there. We don't vote because we don't know what we'd be voting for.
Â
We can't continue this. If there is no oversight of our governments by us, you get what you have in Washington State today. The government doing whatever it wants all of the time knowing full well that Washingtonians will never stop them in the slightest.
Â
We didn't get this bad off by chance. & if Washington State elects yet another democrat Governor, & all of it's countless city, & state mass majorities of liberal democrat ranks like it always does, we have no way to cease our decline. We can not keep doing the same mindless liberal worship again this year, & expect a different out come.Â
Â
We shouldn't be democrats & republicans all working for our parties regardless of where it will lead us. We need to start being real Washingtonians & operate by what is smarter, better, healthier for us. & in this state, democrats are not it. We might have foul medias, but we are not fools. Please Washington, let us be smart, healthy & elect Rom McKenna. For once in this entire state, elect the side that you never do. Give Washington a chance.Â
@Libertyinfinite Honest question: Have you ever lived outside of Washington in other states?Â
Â
I ask because I've lived in a lot of different states and my own personal opinion is that Washington politics work pretty well here. It's not a crazy partisan state. We have no income tax. Olympia gets stuff done when it has to. We aren't in debt. We have excellent schools and one of the best universities in the country.Â
Â
I see a lot of people being negative about Washington and I just don't get it. I think part of it boils down to the fact that Dems have been in control a long time and you guys on the other side just don't like that.Â
McKenna was one of those wacky Republican AGs who sued the federal government over Obamacare.Â
Â
He also promised tort reform, but his office has paid out record amounts of settlement money...our money.
Â
But the bottom line is that McKenna just isn't going to win in this state.Â
Â
Â
@caphillkid You would vote for Charles Manson if he was running as a democrat. You put party affiliation before insight, & concern for what is better for Washington State.Â
Â
I'm not saying you are alone, most people would vote for a mass murderer or criminal, if it was their party because they are just that shallow. S what you do isn't rare.Â
Â
I'm just letting you know because if you drop the all out partisanship in every issue all of the time, you might actually find yourself better off for being open minded to all possibilities.Â
I am a Democrat voting for Rob McKenna
@snake_da_pi I am a republican (though really not so much because romney makes me gag) voting for Obama. & I also am voting for McKenna, absolutely brilliant last night. & I, am thanking you for all Washingtonians for your ability to rise above partisanship, for the better of Washington State. As I do so for the nation.
We are going to give the McKenna campaign just a few more days to decide if they will support firearms rights and issue a statement saying that they support current state law, specifically in the form of preemption and opencarry and that as governor McKenna would veto any attempts to change that by liberal seattle democrats who were mad that McGinn's gun ban was struck down by the court.
Â
If McKenna continues to pretend he doesn't know us, we have the votes to hand this election to Inslee, who has already made that pledge.
Â
If you have a problem with Inslee picking up a lot of votes that are usually republican, then call up the McKenna campaign and complain that avdisors Hannah and Adam there are turning up their noses at a major gun rights group here in WA.
@NorthwestEconomist I think it's sad that you find the entire governorship of Washington State hinges on this. You are barring yourself from participation in our democratic republic.Â
Â
I pity your mental block. So many Americans will refuse to participate in self government for the slightest things. One issue, many times, decides the whole of every governance over you. You can chose to let your other principals go to waste if you want for this election. But if you refuse to participate, you have no right to complain about the government that you elected by default.Â
@Libertyinfinite
Since McKenna has tried to be as liberal as possible to get votes, there really aren't much differences between him and Inslee. In that case, they are both liberals and we at OpenCarry.org will give our votes to the one who pledges to protect our rights against the crusading anti-gun lobbies in Seattle.Â
Â
Like I said, if you don't like it then call up the McKenna campaign phone number and complain that Hanna, Adam, Moe, and Ryan have been ignoring a giant gun rights organization and that they need to respond to our emails and issue the specific written statement we asked for before ballots are sent out next week. You can find the campaign phone number very easily.
Â
Otherwise don't comlain when McKenna loses, WA governor races are always very tight and if he snubs us he WILL lose.
Â
@NorthwestEconomist  @Libertyinfinite I don't vote with any particular 'organization' and I think anyone who does is less than bright.
Â
Vote your conscience after taking ALL aspects into account, not just one miniscule issue. You seem a little out of touch if you believe Inslee and McKenna are so alike that the main separation is a statement over a non-issue. Sad.
Is it just me, or does McKenna look like that creep that attacked that boy with the knife in the bathroom?
Â
Have we ever seen them together in the same place.... hmm.....
Â
Â
@Audio Cat Oh my goddddd wait wait! I didn't even look at your name. Are you by chance an audio slave fan like myself? Look at the beautiful life, state, nation, world laid to waist by them. The evil, the ugly, the media, the government. Hmm. I love that band. Oh well... (if you are not a fan disregard this & carry on with your usual awesome rockin' ness)
@Audio Cat I think komo did that on purpose. They are devoid of facts & truths about our taxpayer funded entire works, & are wholly liberal propaganda. I support McKenna wholly myself & I thought the same thing. But these medias are not here to help us have better lives. They are here to keep us ignorant & voting for democrats, always. You saw the guy on komo right? They timed it to have that child molesters face all over, so you'd see the similarity. Your conscience doesn't find it important, but your actions will be to move away from what a primal fear dictates is danger.
Â
Komo is propaganda. Most medias left & right in America today are propaganda devoid of truth. That's why America & Washington State are wasted. They figure what we don't know only makes them able to get away with murder in every case.Â
Â
Washington State, & America are a culture of the avoidance of governmental realities.
 @Audio Cat ouch
Strange, not what I remember from the debate last night - McKenna said, "He would keep current laws that allow similar rights for same-sex partners as those given to married parters. However, if voters approve Ref. 74 he would not oppose the will of the public." I hope the public puts aside their political biases and vote soley on what each brings to the table. McKenna is clearly the more qualified and the better suited candidate for this position. He's got Washington State on his mind and not D.C. like Inslee portrayed last night.
@RSou812 I agree with you. McKenna was brilliant last night. He would turn this state around phenomenally. He is extremely gifted & just suited to our needs. 47 bills he got passed & signed by his oppositions party in power. Absolutely brilliant. & being here all of this time he knows what has been going through this state. Unlike Inslee who is unfortunately running with the usual partisanship you find here to an abysmal 2/3 majority.Â
Â
We the People are in partisan gridlock. We the Washingtonian People need to bust away from parties & into smarter healthier governments. & McKenna IS THE MAN!
Â
Woo-hoo! I mean seriously, he was phenomenal last night.Â
Â
(& "full disclosure" I am a republican prior to & after Romney only. I will vote for Obama, not that it matters, Washington State is never in a presidential election. But I put partisanship below health & recovery for America. Which is what we need, if we are to break the cycle of ignorance of self governments needs)
@RSou812. It may look like he kinda supports gay marriage but he doesn't. Only a few Rupubs do in the whole US. Sorry but my rights are far too important to me too vote for someone that would stop any further steps a head we might make in gay marriage rights or any of our rights.
@sb in seattle You sound like someone who refuses to participate in self government. You let one issue decide every last thing. You can refuse to participate in self government if you want, fold your arms & refuse to move. But if you don't like the outcome of what you get, you have no right to complain, being that you stood there & wouldn't budge.Â
Â
I'd hate to live by only one issue. It's really pretty sad for you. There is allot of that. & rigid partisanship, to the severe damage of our nation. I'm sorry you won't join us, at any rate. I hate to see anyone stand aside from freedom.Â
It doesn't sound like your fight for rights is against him, but more the "will of the people" in the state of Washington. I believe him when he says, "if it passes he'll let it stand".  Sounds like a win win for all.
 @RSou812 Just like Walker?  LOL!!!
@RSou812 McKenna said the "same rights" not similar rights.  Different meaning.  McKenna talks about fiscal responsibility and not opposing the will of the people but spends how much on a lawsuit that the majority of Washingtonians were against?Â
I find it absolutely funny that McKenna as our State's Attorney General doesn't know the law. Â Domestic partnerships do not provide the same legal protections and rights that are enjoyed by married couples. Â
I have had friends in domestic partnerships, both straight and gay, be told by their accountants and lawyers that they should dissolve their partnership, file their taxes as individuals and write wills, living wills and power of attorney documents.
@zama36
So you don't know the law either? What's your point? Exactly how does Rob McKenna not know the law? Your friends did something & all of a sudden Rob McKenna doesn't know the law.Â
Â
If you know the law, state it, & show where McKenna was wrong. If not stop talking like your head is up your donkey. We don't need your b.s.. I bet you don't even know where to find laws, do ya buddy. Seriously, I bet you haven't seen your government in decades.Â
Â
What a snooze fest....wake me when this race is over.Â
Â
I hate the top two system...
@70MonteCarlo When you don't like what the outcomes of these elections are, you need to remember that you couldn't rouse yourself enough to get up one coherent though on the whole of the state & nations governance. Sit it out, but shut your mouth if it comes out that it gave it to you in the donkey.Â
Is there a credible write in candidate? I don't care for either one of these two. Why? Â McKenna is too far to the right for me and Inslee sounds like he is parroting DC.Â
This morning I am very surprised at my thinking but McKenna so outdid Inslee that it is time to change my vote. Inslee gets smirky . . . sadly much like VP Biden. I have been reading and listening to fact checker reports and also have disliked Inslee's need to put out wrong information and there is NO DOUBT he knows he is lying. I don't want a liar in the Governor's mansion in Olympia. Then I remember Inslee leaving his office to run for governor costing tax- payers over one million dollars. No to Inslee and yes to McKenna.Â
@Lin19Â and the GOP isn't? They are the ones who started down this road years ago.
GOP? We're talking about the Democratic state of Washington? Jay Inslee is the best Washington State could come up with? So sad.... No track record in his 15 years in DC, hasn't done a darn thing for our state, and we're surprised he's so out of touch?
The debate reminded me of the Smothers Brothers. Jay played Tommy Smothers role perfectly.
Vote Inslee to continue economic slavery.
Â
Inslee is a CROOK AND we have been raped and pillaged by him and his Democrat cronies until we are nearly at the point of a catastrophic meltdown...but that has been their socialist utopian leader Obama's plan from the start - create a huge economic meltdown across the nation so that Liberal Progressive Democrats can create more and larger government controls, institutions and entitlement programs...
Â
Â
@Truth Percolates "Inslee is a CROOK AND we have been raped and pillaged by him (citation needed)"
@Truth Percolates right and regulation doesn't work. Horses ass. You see how that helped the banks right? Idiot.
 @Truth Percolates Facts? Â
Â
Someone obviously doesn't know recent history. Â The economic meltdown was a result of deregulation pushed by the Republicans during the Bush administration. Â Things collapsed in Fall 2008 before Obama was even elected. Â
@Truth Percolates Do you have any facts to support that claim? I haven't been paying attention to these two. Maybe, I should. I agree with what you said without aiming it directly at Inslee.
@Funky-Munky  @Truth Percolates Never call TP out for the facts. He is a straight propaganda troll. Set phasers on "ignore"
 @Audio Cat Pew pew
This state is full of leaks that keep getting plugged only for a new one to open up. Â The entire system needs rebuilding. Â I hope the voters understand and embrace that change is a necessity in this election, regardless of who they vote for. Â This isn't about thumping our chests and saying "My party won", it's about the health of our State, which has not been healthy for years.Â
@Eichler4 Well said!!!!!!.
Anyone know where the transcript is?
I'm voting for Inslee but, my feelings won't be hurt if McKenna wins... (however unlikely).
Inslee is clueless, more of the same liberal feel good, say anything for a vote. KcKenna can manage the budget and hopefully get us out of the hole that tax and spend past administrations have put us in.
@opout The fact that you think that there is a hole leads me to believe that you weren't paying attention these last few months.Â
Â
Washington, like most states, don't operate like D.C. States have to balanced their budgets.Â
Â
Remember that big fight in Olympia earlier this year to cut cut cut?Â
McKenna knows what's going on and is realistic in his assessments. 8 years to get education turned around and funded is a good example. Inslee is a repeat of what we have. Should be a no-brainer of a vote. That is, for any other region but this one.
Debates aside and with the rhetoric out the window. If you vote the same way you did four years ago you will get the same results in the next for the next four. If you like the state of the State vote for Inslee If you think the governor has lied, cheated, wasted and, stolen you money for the last eight years vote for Rob. That is the break down on the way it goesâ¦.
@bustedupredneck. Yep voting for change that will come for the better and that takes time to get there. You really think the economy could have been fixed in 3.5 years? The economy didn't bottom out until last year. Idiot.
@bustedupredneck How has the governor "lied, cheated, wasted and, stolen you money for the last eight years?"  Specifics?Â
Let's all just remember what they say they are going to do. Hold them accountable, whoever it is. They had better get spending and our budget in order, that's for damn sure. Gregoire just had no sense of that... just spend, spend, spend... and I think she knows she blew it.
A little slant on an old phrase: If you vote the way you've always voted, you're going to get what you've always gotten. Don't expect anything different if you vote for more of the same.
Both the Republicans and the Democrats have something to cheer about today because neither of the candidates did or said anything that will hurt their chances within their respected Parties. Personally, I think that the race is going to be too close to call and may even require a recount before all is settled.
