'It's not right they're having to live in a situation like this'

SEATAC, Wash. -- Bed bugs were crawling all over their home, but a local elderly couple could not afford to pay an exterminator.

So the Problem Solvers teamed up with experts to help the pair.

Exterminator Michele Cruzat's heart broke when she learned the couple could not afford an exterminator

"I saw the worst case of bed bug infestation I've seen in the last couple years, and I've see quite a few," said Cruzat of Eden Advanced Pest Technologies.

The bugs are everywhere in the couple's home.

"I wanted to do whatever I could to help these people get rid of their problem," Cruzat said.

Cruzat shared news of the couple's problem with her boss Rob Breznen, who needed to see the infestation for himself. It didn't take him long to confirm just how bad it was.

"It looks like you probably have them under the carpets as well, the wall voids, under the sofas," Breznen said after examining the home. "It's a heavy infestation."

The bed bugs are crawling all over the bed the couple had been sleeping in. They've even moved into the bed the pair bought just a day ago.

"This is somebody's grandparents -- could be my grandparents, could be your grandparents. And it's not right they're having to live in a situation like this," said Breznen.

The Problem Solvers worked with the couple's state guardian to get permission to help. And Eden sealed the deal with a generous offer.

"We'd be willing to come and do this free of charge for you," said Breznen.

Neighbors said criminals had drained the couple's life's savings and had stolen valuables, including their truck. Now the couple will get the most advanced pest control treatment valued at $3,000, and all because someone cared.

"Even just running a story like this will maybe motivate somebody else to want to help somebody else and kind of pay it forward a little bit," said Cruzat.

The couple are also now getting a lot of assistance from the agency appointed to serve as their guardian.
