State Congressional candidate: 'Rape thing' not cause for abortion

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A Republican congressional candidate says abortion should not be legal, even when it involves "the rape thing," according to audio provided Wednesday to The Associated Press.
An activist working on behalf of liberal group FUSE Washington asked questions of Republican hopeful John Koster during a Sunday fundraiser. Koster said he does not oppose abortion when the life of the mother is in danger but then explains he would oppose it when it involves rape or incest.
Koster twice uses the phrase "the rape thing" when describing his views, first saying that he knows a woman who was raped and gave up the child for adoption without any regrets.
"But on the rape thing, it's like, how does putting more violence onto a woman's body and taking the life of an innocent child that's a consequence of this crime, how does that make it better?" Koster said in the exchange.
Koster's campaign manager Larry Stickney says the candidate has long been a proponent of dealing strongly with sex offenders. He noted that Koster worked in the state legislature on legislation to crack down on sex offenders and has daughters of his own.
"To imply that he's cavalier about the issue is preposterous," Stickney said.
Koster is locked in a competitive House race against Democrat Suzan DelBene, who spoke out against the comments Wednesday evening.
"I think his comments were offensive. They were extremely insensitive," DelBene said. "I think that women should have the right to make their own healthcare decisions between themselves and their doctors."
Republicans have been beleaguered this year by comments about rape that some have deemed offensive. Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., who is challenging Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, said women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."
More recently, Indiana GOP candidate Richard Mourdock has been criticized for saying that pregnancy resulting from rape is God's will.
Collin Jergens, a spokesman at the advocacy group FUSE Washington, said one of the group's activists went to the fundraiser to ask Koster about the issue of abortion. Democrats have been trying to portray Koster as out of touch with the district, which stretches from areas east of Seattle to the border with Canada, and they have focused particularly on his stance on social issues.
"I was kind of shocked by how dismissive and demeaning it was," said Aaron Ostrom of FUSE.
Sara Kiesler, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest, said the Koster's remarks are proof that he shouldn't be involved in a woman's decision about her pregnancy.
"My gut reaction was that rape is violence, and that rape is a crime, and that his choice of words diminishes that violence," Kiesler said.

Is it me, or does it seem odd that GOP candidates and incumbents have been pre-occupied with Rape during this election year? Todd Akin, after his legimate rape comment  is now getting a helping hand from Newt, Mourdak made the comment last week that rape babies are God's will, and now the Rape thing from Koster.
Â
That rape is a violent act of dominance, not sex, is being ignored and the fact that some members of the GOP could be characterized as social rapists is not a stretch.  I have to say that I'm noticing a trend, among those who claim GOP affliation, of attempts to dominate anyone who doesn't agree with the extreme conservative view in really ugly attacks that occur here on this forum.  Course that leads to retaliation.
Â
Something that people would be well served to consider: If this board was not an anonymous platform, would you (the raging extremists who believe that insulting and denigrating others menas they 'won' the argument) write some of the ugly degrading comments to your fellow mammals? If we knew who eachother was, I'll bet some of us would be in for a surprise.Â
Â
@Smokin Bear well I use my real name....  Â
@Andrew Bush - Actually, I'm your mother...LOL!!!
 @Smokin Bear Personally, I wouldn't challenge a grizzly bear. That's just me.
Why is an unborn, undeveloped embryo a more important life to right-wing conservatives than innocent Afghani civilians who we murder daily with our drones? Oh, that's right. They follow the wrong religion.Â
@jowsuf Go to youtube, and watch a video of an abortion via ultrasound.  Then tell us after seeing that baby scratch and claw for every bit of it's life while it's being sawed to pieces and vacuumed that it's nothing more than an undeveloped embryo. Â
@Eichler4  @jowsuf Ok, so the baby is born. Someone has to take care of it. Since you so desperately want to save it, why don't you donate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 18 years to raising that child?
Mr. Stickney, your candidate implied all on his own that his attitude is cavalier on "this rape thing".
Â
Undoubtably a stupid comment made by a politician. I have to wonder if the press went back through his opponents press conference's they'd find something equally stupid on any subject open to discussion.
If you're a single subject voter and you think a WA state Congressman is going to overturn Roe v Wade over the next two years I'm sure this will affect your vote.
As a fiscal conservative I'm more concerned with the spending spree our state legislature has been on for the last decade and the damage they can do if the voters don't convince them to change their ways.
@Mej47 Bush was a conservative. How'd that work out for you?
@Mej47 Strange, you say you're "more concerned with the spending spree our state legislature has been on for the last decade and the damage they can do if the voters don't convince them to change their ways."
Â
However, Koster is running for U.S. Congress and not a Washington State representative, which is something he already did for 3 terms, along with city and county government. He now seeks NATIONAL office. This seems to be confusing you, so I just wanted to clear that up.
Â
Further, the state is limited in its "deficit spending" abilities by our Washington State Constitution. I'm fairly certain that Washington State is required to have a balanced budget, but can assume credit (currently at a maximum of 9% of the budget) for incorrectly forecasted revenue shortfalls and expenditure overages to protect against a "shut down" of our state. So, to say they are on a "spending spree" only implies that you do not understand how our State government operates.
Â
Vote for the candidate of your choice. I value that freedom. However, when you cast your vote based on ignorance of the issues, you are not voting YOUR choice, but that of those who MISINFORM you of the facts in order to put the person of THEIR choice in power.
@Mej47 Koster is running for the US House of Representatives, NOT the Washington State Legislature.
@Mej47  Of course you are.  Â
This ultra-conservative "uprising" is an act of pure desperation. The dinosaurs are dying and they know it. Remember the white people in the southeast who screamed racial slurs at 12 year old black school children when they desegregated schools? These lunatics aren't any different. They re simply screaming new slurs. They are a dying stain though... and they know it.Â
@TruthinAdverts Unfortunately they are not dying fast enough.
@TruthinAdverts  You hit the nail on the head. Â

@IamAmerican00 That's terrific. Props to your wife and her Mom. That is and was her Mom's choice. While you may mirror the same position, it does not give you the means to force or implement your views on others. I do know in fact that pregnancy via rape/incest has had fatal consequences. Where a young lady took her own life after such an incident. If you have your wish and an abortion is not a selective solution, there will be more such instances. As you so quickly label one side with stupidity is can be quickly be applied to the religious right. Legitimate rape... God's will and other incredibly 'stupid' statements. I will expect you to respond and quickly 'prove my point'. I'll wait.....
It's very offensive and narrow of you to state that anyone who supports pro-choice is a "left winger"Â there are people who are both conservative and liberal in their thinking.
Â
Extreme labelling appears to be a tired method of dominating anyone who disagrees with party rhetoric.

@Andrew Bush - Ah. Some people's kids...
@Smokin Bear unfortunately his external profile is connected to his screen name  LOL!!!
@Smokin Bear he is doing it... Just another screen name created by Jeremy to troll and nothing more.  Â
Â
Makes you wonder how many this Jeremy guy has created in the name of the tea party. Â : )
@Andrew Bush - Interesting. Wonder if the Admin is doing that or the poster?
@Smokin Bear I see the troll @IamAmerican00 is deleting all his comments.... again. Â
@IamAmerican00 - Don't care WHY you resorted to blanket labelling - offering an excuse doesn't make it less offensive. Â
Â
Â
@IamAmerican00 Your ignorance is showing. Learn to spell and MAYBE I will take seriously what you are trying to say.
Â
Hint: Precedent and straight.
@IamAmerican00  Who the hell do you think you are telling others what they should do?  Â
Â
Your left wing garbage rant means nothing. Â You don't want an abortion don't have one. Â
Â
Its that simple. Â

@IamAmerican00  @Andrew Bush A two week old embryo isn't a person no matter how many times your church tells you it is. You aren't murdering anything. You're halting a process that LEADS to something.
Please cite your source for partial birth abortion having ever been legal along with specific cases where it occurred. Â
Â
The neo conservatives had a ball spreading the rumor during the 90's to inflame voters.
@IamAmerican00 Who cares... You will NEVER get to decide whether a woman gets an abortion or not.  Â
Â
Never. Â Ever. Â Whine on little man. Â Whine on. Â
@IamAmerican00  You don't get to decide who gets an abortion.. Â
Â
Such a sense of entitlement you display. Â
Â
Too bad you come up limp in the end. Â
Â
(which is why I think a lot of men feel the need to control women. Â They can't please one so they lash out. Â
Â
This is nothing new. Â You usually out yourselves. Â Â
Â
@IamAmerican00 Too bad.... The law is clear and you do not get to control what choices women make.  Â
Â
You can whine on and stamp your feet in your hissy fit but it wont matter. Â
Â
YOU don't get a say. Â Deal with it. Â
"Rape thing". What a piece o f%$^#*.
I just think it would be important to worry as much about the fetus as sending people into deadly wars.

@IamAmerican00  Its just killing you that you don't get to dictate what women do.  Â
Real men don't try to control women. Â
@nunya1 I think more people should be concerned with wars than trying to control what others are doing when it comes to their personal decisions.Â
@Andrew Bush you are so blatantly ignorant of the other human beings in the decision loop and most importantly those that have no say AND are completely defenseless. Way to go big guy. At least give those little "not quite yet people" a wink and a nod and say "sorry, kid sucks to be you". That is the least the pro abortion people could do. Show their true color.
 @jowsuf  Church people don't masturbate.  Its a sin. Â
Â
And one day they will prevent the world from masturbation!!!!  (Evil Laugh)
@Rick4001CS  @Andrew Bush A two week old embryo isn't a person no matter how many times your church tells you it is. That's like saying I just killed hundreds of people when I rubbed one out.Â
 @Rick4001CS waaaa waaaaa.Â
I will never believe that Republicans are against abortion until I see them providing education and birth control to everyone who is at an age to need it. They use abortion as a hot topic every election cycle to inflame their base, and once the election is over.... it's back to business as usual. This has been going on for years, why are their followers too blind to see it?
Paid for by "Anything Left" a.k.a KOMO "News"
@Gino Its the AP genius. Â
@Andrew Bush @Gino - ANYONE OR ANYTHING that documents what a right winger does is automatically 'only happened because of the liberal media' or 'the liberal media is dishonestly attacking a right wing candidate'.
Â
It's how right wing politics thinks these days.
@FormerMarineSgt  I know.... Its all Gino has left apparently. Â
Â
He makes the same accusations on every story about republicans and the idiotic things they say and do. Â
What I want to know is, what do all of you 'pro lifers' think about condoms or the birth control pill. It does the same thing, just a few weeks earlier than abortion. I know you think that just because a fetus has begun to form that means life, but it doesn't.
Â
Also, I've heard that many of those unborn fetus posters you wackjobs hold up on street corners are much older than the legal amount for abortion.
Â
It's like the marijuana initiative. Do I agree with smoking pot? No, I personally do not. But, I voted yes on it because it is the person's choice whether or not to throw their life away.
@AndySue28 Oh! Someone has an opinion. Unfortunately it's not fact.
Â
Condoms and birth control pills prevent conception. That's a whole lot different than abortion which kills the fetus after conception. There is a difference.
Â
@Gino  @AndySue28 do rapist use condoms? birth control? do women need to give birth to a fetus that will never grow up, to pay taxes? yet burden the tax payers that they tear the rest of the world apart? this isent a silly game
@Gino  @maggie112  @AndySue28 They are both forms of birth control.
@maggie112  @AndySue28 I was responding to a statement from andysue about the difference between birth control and abortion stating that they were not the same.
Â
I said nothing about rapists or taxes.
I'm starting to wonder if many people who are so adamantly against abortion, for any reason, don't secretly fear, given the choice and opportunity, that they themselves would have been aborted. Or that they themselves would not have been conceived had a parent used effective birth control. Can you imagine how unsettling that feeling would be at the core of your belief system?
