Local divers outraged over killing of octopus
SEATTLE -- People come to Cove Two in West Seattle for the view, both above and below water. But a round of online pictures went viral and turned diver against diver.
Bob Bailey says he saw two young men carrying a live octopus from the water.
"As they were coming in you could tell the octopus was alive. It was writhing around and they were wrestling with it," he said.
Scott Lundy saw them toss it in a pickup truck.
"Sitting in the back of this truck, it was just squirming and writhing almost. It was really just a sad thing to see," he said.
According to the state, the man in his 20s has a license to fish. He was allowed to take the octopus from the water with his hands, and octopus are not protected in these specific waters. Everything that happened was legal. But Bailey says that doesn't make it right.
"It's just not done," he said. "It's bad form. Even if you can do it, you shouldn't do it."
The divers didn't like the young men's attitude, saying they had a disregard for the water. Bailey says the men referred to the animal as a "he," but Bailey noted they were wrong.
"I said, 'That's a she and she's probably here to lay eggs.' At which point he looked at me and said 'She was on eggs and now she's not,'" he said.
Bailey hopes it was all talk and a full generation of octopus hasn't been lost.
The man and his family declined to comment on the record, saying there have been threats made because of the online postings.

Â
Make Cove 2 a protected area, just like Keystone.
Â
I have been diving for 30 years, there are just as many octopus as ever. The fact that you must take them by hand with no tools pretty well eliminates 99% of divers from EVER TRYING to get one. There are TONS of octopus, just go for a nightdive sometime. The fact that you even see them AT ALL during the day show you how many there are, they like to hide, they are very good at it, the best hiding spots are taken (thats the ones you cant even find) go out nite diving and you will see 2-5x more octopi at any location.
Â
There are LOTS of OCTOPUS, I have taken 2 in 30 years, I know hardly any divers that have ever taken one.Â
Â
You can't legislate for us all to become vegan's, that is never going to happen. You will just have to sabotage our vehicles while we are diving I guess.
Â
IT IS OK TO EAT SEAFOOD Â IT IS OK TO EAT SEAFOOD IT IS OK TO EAT SEAFOOD Â Â IT IS OK TO EAT SEAFOODÂ
These people are ridiculous. Wild animals are eaten everyday by other wild animals. The people who care more for animals than people are the problem. This is pure American B.S. Only in America do some people care more about a starving kitten than a starving homeless person. In other countries, they will kill the starving kitten to feed two homeless people. Unfortunately America, Bambi gets killed twice a day in some countries of the world because people and lions are hungry. Â
you just know who they'll vote for on the 6th
Â
Horrible excuse for human beings. Octopie are highly intelligent, more-so than these two cruel idiots. :(  I hope the laws do change. Going to send out a few emails as well!
Â
From wikipedia - "In some countries, octopuses are on the list of experimental animals on which surgery may not be performed without anesthesia. In the UK, cephalopods such as octopuses are regarded as 'honorary vertebrates' under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and other cruelty to animals legislation, extending to them protections not normally afforded to invertebrates."
Â
"It has also been proven that they feel pain pretty much the same way a human does do their extensive nervous system." (http://www.helium.com/items/1175153-the-octopus-defense-mechanisms)
I'm pretty sure blowing up chickens isn't legal. Please, local people make sure this gets to the proper animal cruelty authorities. It was uploaded by Dylan himself, on his youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3kjYGlZjgo&feature=plcpÂ
 @Cassandra Lee OMG! Really? Is he for real? makes me sick!
 @Cassandra Lee Wow, he blows up an unsuspecting chicken and responds by laughing and saying "I'm drooling toothpick!" This is clearly a genuine hero we're working with.
There is now an online petition that will be taken to a WDFW meeting next week in order to get protection for GPO in our waters.
Â
Orcas, Wolf Eels, Rock Fish, Abelone, etc. etc.. ALL have protection..
Â
The "1 per day" limit will let people like this destroy an entire GPO population from dive sites like Cove 2 in less than a week!!!
Â
Sign the petition:

 @PNW Diver That is ASSININE! do you think people are just going to run down there and start grabbing octopus all of a sudden. This law has been unchanged for decades, and we still have octopus (lots of them) I have been diving In San Juans  and puget sound for 30 years, I have taken two octopus. I hardly know ANYONE who has ever taken one. The fact that they must be taken by hand is a bit of a deterrent for most people!
 @PNW Diver Thank you for putting the SAVE THE GPO PETITION up. Let our voices be heard.
@PNW Diver - Thank you for posting this, I just signed it.
I called called the Mayor's office and plead for the city of Seattle to step in and make our water parks a reserve so this cruel act won't happen again. I had a nice talk with Tom (one of the Mayor's receptionist), and he will be getting back to me on how our cities officials can step in and assist us in preserving our marine life. I call for all divers to call the Mayors office and ask him to make this a personal issue along with us.
Â
Sunday morning I did a dive and saw for the first time in 9 years how our GPO's mate starting when they first see each other: Olives Den Logs in front of the Peer. Then I saw two more GPO's under the Honey Bear towards the bow mating too the same day.
Â
Tuesday night, there was a GPO in some rocks about 53fsw, and the two others were still under the Honey Bear.
These GPO's to me, are our pride and joy.
Â
We govern our own by teaching our open water students Marine Conservation. But this guy didn't get that lesson.
He is NOT welcomed in MY dive shop if I see him.
Â
Sorry follow divers for my rant. I love (as do you all too) our marine diversity here in Elliot Bay/Puget Sound. I feel like I've been..... Â
Â
Just go back to Calif. do your killings there. Leave our marine life alone.
 @Green Diver Please don't discuss where the GPOs are for their own safety.
 @Rich Good point. Thank you.
 @Green Diver Um? How much weed do you smoke before dropping down into the ocean to observe wild life mating?
 @Kristina Raymond I don't smoke. Thank you. You? There's a book called Cephalopd Behaviour. by Roger T. Hanlon & John B. Messenger. You should read it. get some perspective or something. Thank you.
THANK YOU. Even though people here have not the breeding or courtesy to be polite, THANK YOU for your efforts to do the right thing.
Â
Just have no words for the unbelievable creeps on this board who feel entitled to attack someone who is attempting to protect the animals in our area .
Â
What is wrong with you? Are you either completely devoid of human compassion or so full of your own importance that you cannot conceive of any "outsider" taking measures that you are too cowardly to attempt?Â
Dylan Mayer is a dangerous and vicious piece of scum society could well do without. If he begins murdering people...well, we told ya so!  There is every indication that he is headed in that direction. I vote massive dosages of Thorazine for Mr. Mayer, for the remainde of his miserable life.
Â
 @Smokin Bear
I never have been so upset like this before. Other than whale hunting.
I'm sorry for not being compassionate enough for your liking - no disrespect intended.
I'm very compassionate about a lot of different issues like: hunting/killing of Seals, Polar Bears ecological or environmental issues, preservation and protection of Bald Eagles, and the Gray Wolf, etc, etc.
I'm a male who is for woman's rights: equal income for the same job title as a man. I'm pro-life as long as the mother isn't in any danger of her life. As for rape in insets, in full support of the woman's choice. moreover, I don't believe in the death penalty - period. I do have human compassion. I'm a conservative with a lot of liberal views.
If it wasn't for my disability, I would do all I can to help with the efforts back east.
I grew up loving Green Peace to save the whales during the 70's. If I could, I would join Captain Paul Watson with his mission to stop whale hunting.
"Full of your own importance?" No, I don't think I'm important I'm voicing how I feel as has many others.Â
My hope was to let the dive community know that the mayor, the Seattle City council has been contacted as well as Tim Eyman. Hoping that they can provide something for the change we hope to achieve.
I really don't care who will read this as long as the ball get rolling to protect marine ecology, and anyone who will stand and make through any legal means (attending council meetings and voicing concerns), and this very morning I learned there is an online petition to put a stop to this. That's wonderful.
Some of our daily livelihoods prevents us from attending town hall/city council meetings to speak out for change. Does your job allow you to leave to attend a council meeting between 9am - 5pm? Mine doesn't. Yours?
Yes, Dylan Mayer was well within his rights to do this - great, wonderful, whatever. but I never thought during my experience diving here in the Northwest that someone would be bold enough to do such a thing.
I am sorry if I was cross on this board, but why shouldn't we take issues like this personally? I am glad that we are coming together and pushing to make change.
"... that you cannot conceive of any "outsider" taking measures that you are too cowardly to attempt?"Â Remember, I called the Mayors office hoping to start change and I am expecting another call from the Mayors office next week. I have contacted city council for help and information too. Signing a petition is only one step to making change. It doesn't mean anything until we get a voice to speak-out publicly.
Will it be someone from the Seattle Aquarium, or one of us? I don't know enough about public speaking to make a difference, but I'm good with research and asking questions.
I would be glad to share the telephone call-back from the Mayors office and the email reply from the Seattle city council to the dive community.Â
I'm asking, what then can I do or actions to take so change can take place.

The Seattle City Council contact information is:

Thank you.
@Green Diver - You completely misread my post. In the first part, I was thanking you for doing the right thing.
Â
My comments after the first paragraph were NOT directed at you, but at the people on this board who were attacking you.Â
Â
Got it? :-)
Â
Â
 @Green Diver  @Smokin BearÂ
I think the "What's wrong with you" part was directed at the posters supporting what these guys did, not at you.
 @Green Diver The Puget Sound isn't your private petting zoo. Get some perspective.
 @LockesChild Your right. It's ours to enjoy, and it needs to be protected.
 @Green Diver "Go back to Calif. do your killings there."  Where'd that come from? These guys were locals. This Californian spoke with King County Animal Control, after speaking with the King County Sheriff Department, and emailed them the snake picture.Â
 @Michael F. Where'd that come from? Sorry I was miss informed. I didn't get that message until now, My bad, and I stand corrected. Thank you.
If you are going to blame anyone you should go after WDFW .What these two did was legal ,was it right no but it was legal and that is all that matters so lay off these guys and focus your anger towards the WDFW
Oh and by the way they were originally claiming that they "were just swimming by, and it attacked us." And "it was on its eggs, but its not now." Now it was a male and they "checked for eggs" yeah....sure. Â Funny how much his story has changed...Â
First, yes it was legal. Let's start there. Cove 2 should probably be a marine park and be protected. If these guys did this off some other beach, it wouldn't be news. Location matters. Deer hunters don't pop deer on a golf course. Even if its legal, you just don't do it. Second, if this is the time of year that an octopus lays eggs, then why is the season open if that is the concern. DFW can easily change that. And/or they can make it illegal to kill an octopus that is on eggs. Finally, I missed the ability to go to these guys facebook pages to see the other cruelty you all say is there. Assuming it is, they have real, real problems. DFW should look at the posts and see if anything illegal occurred and make sure it doesn't again.

People are starting to post the Facebook pages of the diver which were screen copied before he made them private.
 @Eskimo Pie All interesting
As a diver who frequents Cove 2, these people  claim to have not not done anything illegal. Which may be correct. However, there has been a posting as to some knives being found where this GPO had made her den. If it is proven that these knives belonged to them, then they broke the law and should be prosecuted. Well until it is proven that the hunted illegally there is not much to do except to push for laws that will make this illegal in the future. Remember that  years ago the diving community banded together to stop the fishing of six gills  and also recently a few of the dive clubs were able to help keep Cove 2 open to diving.  It is awesome how the diving community can get together and get laws changed.Â
 @diverbob six gills are a threatened species. GPO ARE NOT! taking them by hand pretty much eliminates 99%  of divers from ever taking one. They taste good, there are lots of them. Make Cove 2 a protected area, OF COURSE! Just like keystone. there is nothing wrong with eating seafood!
 @diverbob Thank you for calling on us to make change.
Not to become an angry mob towards this guy;Â we need to tell our officials what we want to protect our marine life.
Just because you have a license for deer hunting doesn't mean you go to the local park and take out the neighborhood pet deer legal or not. This guy might be law abiding but has no common sense. He made a big mistake now he is getting educated about life.
The larger the octopus, the tougher the meat. There is a reason sushi restaurants serve smaller size octopi. This is simply a waste. If I had my way I would make these amateurs eat every piece. What a waste of life.

 @Tanner Scheid Wow.  Educated much?
An octopus of this size must defeat many odds to become an object of such grandeur. How sad that these losers thought only of themselves and lacked the compassion and foresight to allow this animal to live (deservedly) for many more years in her ocean home.
Â
Legal or not, these images are deplorable. What happened here goes beyond the laws of morality. Just because you can does NOT mean you should. It certainly doesn't make it right. Here's to "what goes around comes around".Â
Good grief.
Passive agressive Seattle. Make up yer minds.
Â
Â
It was legal. If so many people are upset about it, then it's possible to have that changed.
Â
The guy didn't break any laws, so threatening him and bashing him online isn't going to help anything. He likely didn't know what a big deal this is to other divers, but I'm sure he does now. So stop with the name calling and insults... at this point it's nothing but mean and childish to do that. Acting like that doesn't make you any better of a person than he is. What would make a difference now is to direct all that energy into changing the laws so that it doesn't happen again.
 @lilhikergrl
Hey I'm all for hunting responsibly, as are a lot of divers BUT....
Â
IF YOU HAD ALL OF THE INFO ON THE GUY YOU'D BE OUTRAGED! Â
Â
The divers who originally spoke with the young man were very courteous. Â They just wanted to explain that this was not the best place to hunt.Â
Â
The young man was very belligerent and then taunted that he took the animal off a nest of eggs (Actually Killing 100,000).  He then indicated that he would be back at the same site the next night to kill more.
Â
I'm hoping there will be a follow up report on this kid.  His FB posts were very disturbing, the pictures he posted included a snake blown up with fire crackers and a porcupine which was used to play "football".

 @lilhikergrlÂ
Sad that the thousands of people who have been diving there for decades never needed any laws in place for us to know the difference between right and wrong.
Â
If she was on her clutch of eggs, then she wasn't fare game!
 @lilhikergrl They have histories of animal cruelty!! No, they don't get it! They're sociopaths, and they never will get it.
 @lilhikergrl , we shouldnt have to make "wrong" things against the law.  We should have the ability to mentally know what is right and what is wrong.  What he did is wrong on so many levels and you are right, we need to make a new law because he NEEDS a law to tell him what is rational behavior concerning animals welfare.  Another sad day for the animals world. And we should be angry at him for forcing us to correct and protect wildlife from HIS physical abuse...Â
@Joy Whitney @lilhikergrl OK, I didn't want to be attacked for suggesting that we all act like adults. I'm sorry for trying to bring a little civility to the conversation. I didn't ever say that what he did was right, just that it was legal. Leave me alone... please. I'm not even a diver, and judging from the tone of this comment board I don't think I'd ever like to be one.
 @Joy Whitney  @lilhikergrl  @Joy I think lilhikergrl was trying to point out the futility of bashing this man, his actions, and threatening his life. By attempting to suggest people enraged with his actions use their anger to prompt them into action therefore bringing a positive outcome of a negative action, she was trying to change the world a little for the better.Â
Â
But if bashing, carrying on, and harassing a complete stranger makes peoples days a little brighter far be it for me to stop. Go ahead, have fun, although I might suggest a therapist would bring a better outcome if you get off on that kinda stuff.Â
 @Joy Whitney  @lilhikergrl  @Joy This chick is Paranoid...cheesus!!! LOL
Â
Â
 @lilhikergrl  @Joy  @Joy Maybe you should realize this is a site to comment and respond?  What part did you miss?  Again, no on that I can see attacked you, myself included.  No one hates you. Silly girl.  And as far as taking it the state to introduce a new bill?  Might have to happen because some people dont understand how to treat other life forms. Â
@Joy Whitney @Joy If that's really true, then take it and direct it towards F&W (those who make the laws regarding harvesting). And don't forget, if you have nothing nice to say, it's better to say nothing. I'm done... I got enough hate out of this already.
 @lilhikergrl  @Joy You werent being attacked.  Your comment was being addressed as you suggested, we should make a new law.Â
 @Joy Whitney  @lilhikergrl Well Stated...
 @lilhikergrl Did you even watch the story??? - Changing the Laws is precisely what the fellow Divers were talking about....
@_Monte_ Exactly... I'm sorry if my comment confused you.
Â
My point is that all this energy is directed in the wrong direction. I see a lot of really negative comments here... I don't mean to start a fight I just think the name calling and insults are not necessary.
@lilhikergrl Sometimes they are. We try to be civil on here but some comments are so outragious we get carried away.
