Longer sentence for man who robbed Skamania skier
STEVENSON, Wash. (AP) - Nearly five more years has been added to the sentence of a man previously given 14 years in prison for robbing a cross-country skier in Skamania County.
Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor Yarden Weidenfeld says the 57-month sentence handed down Thursday to Michael D. Collins in Stevenson will be served after his present term.
The Columbian reports the 36-year-old Collins was convicted Tuesday of failing to register as a sex offender.
His robbery conviction came for a car theft in the 2009 attack on a cross-country skier. Collins also was found guilty of an attempted murder charge and given a 25-year sentence, but that was overturned on appeal.
Collins' lawyer, Michael Thompson, called the latest trial unnecessary and accused the prosecutor's office of overzealous prosecution.
