Man shot by Snohomish Co. deputies died of multiple gunshot wounds

EVERETT, Wash. -- A man who was shot by deputies Wednesday died of multiple gunshot wounds, Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office officials announced Friday.

Matthew Scott Wiese, 46, of Lynnwood was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a deadly confrontation with Snohomish County sheriff's deputies outside a home in the 15200 block of Meadow Road, just north of Martha Lake.

He died at the hospital.

Three deputies remain on paid administrative leave. That is standard practice for officers involved in deadly-force incidents.

The deputies were in the Martha Lake area about 7 p.m. investigating a report that Wiese had violated a protection order granted to his wife.

Wiese may have been launching fireworks at deputies before the shooting, according to a recording of police radio traffic.

Police have not confirmed whether fireworks were involved. They also haven't said if Wiese was armed at the time of the confrontation.

The shooting is being investigated by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team. Two detectives, one from Everett and another from Mukilteo, have been assigned to lead the probe.

The case eventually will be turned over to Snohomish County Prosecutor Mark Roe to determine if the shooting was legally justified.
