Man accused of filming breast-pumping co-worker
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The authorities arrested a Portland man accused of placing a pen camera in a co-worker's office to obtain video of her using a breast pump.
Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said Tuesday that Russell Kent Gordon was fired Jan. 15, the day after the woman discovered the camera on her desk and alerted supervisors.
The 44-year-old information technology employee was arrested Friday on charges of burglary and invasion of privacy. He was booked into the Multnomah County jail and released on his own recognizance.
Simpson says detectives are not aware of any additional victims.

I think this is very sad.. I think that we should be encouraging employers to have longer lunch hours for ladies who choose to breast-feed their children. This would give them the opportunity to go home or to daycare so they can physically feed their child, pump milk, and make sure that they have the opportunity to have a nutritious lunch. I was lucky that I had an employer who allowed me to work split shifts. Breast-feeding babies should not be with out mom for no more than 4 hours if you want to encourage a successful outcome. Â Anyway, I hope this man is prosecuted to the full extent of the law and he becomes a sex offender. What he did was awful.Â

Let me preempt this by saying I am not blaming the victim or defending the guy. Now, I have to wonder why she would be using a breast pump at her desk vs. excusing herself to somewhere maybe a little more private. I kind of feel like using a breast pump in your office is slightly inappropriate.
 @cm257n7 How much more private can you get than closed off in a private office?!  I suppose you'd just have all the women go sit on the toilet in the restroom to pump?  Or would you just not allow women w/babies in the workplace at all? Â

 @cm257n7  @JusticeSeeker You ask your supervisor or manager for an empty rooom or rooms to use when you need to pump...for example, a storage closet, an unused meeting room, a private office that someone has been designated or offered to let you use, an area created/blocked off by cubical walls/panels or a curtain, if all else fails and your boss is not willing to provide you a safe and comfortable place (which is, in fact, a law) then you could just do it right there in front of everyone...I'm sure they would find a nice private place for you real quick!
 @cm257n7 When I had to pump, my PRIVATE office was the only place to pump! I guess of course, I could have locked myself in bathroom stall...
 @mj6 Now hang on ladies, I am a woman too. I'm just saying when I think of an office I think of more than one person walking around. In your case MJ, since you had a private office I don't see a problem.
 @cm257n7 What I gathered is that the woman had a private office and he violated her privacy. It says he placed the pen IN her office. And yeah, using the breast pump is necessary unless you want to be in pain, leak, or stop producing milk for your baby if you aren't at home with the baby.

From what the story said, she had an "office" - which poresumably meant that it had a door that could be closed for privacy.

Most offices do not have a "private" room where a breast feeding mother would be able to relax & piump.  Perhaps you feel she should have gone to the suppoly room (yeah, that's cozy) or the restroom (definately not sanitary for pumping). Maybe a coat closet? A storage room?

I'm not suggesting any of those things. I don't know the rules on pumping. I didn't know you could just bust it out wherever. I thought was something you did at home for the babysitter WHILE you were at work. I guess it makes sense that you would need to during the day though. But WHY would you want to do it at work? And truthfully it couldn't have been THAT private if he knew it was going on. I know breastfeeding is a hot topic and I'm not trying to start a fire or offend anyone. Like I told MJ below; I am also a woman I just didn't have babies.
 @cm257n7 You have to keep pumping to keep your milk supply up.  If you are not pumping or feeding your baby every 2 or 3 hours you will loose your milk supply and not be able to provide breast milk.  She has every right to pump and this guy is a perv.  Pumping is far from glamorous or sexy, it's actually quite awkward.  This man is just a perv.
