Man accused of putting dog in hot oven appears in court

SALEM, Ore. – A 20-year-old Lyons, Ore. man accused of beating a 6-year-old Chihuahua and putting it in a heated oven appeared in in Marion County court Tuesday afternoon.
Kevin Parrish is charged with aggravated animal abuse.
But even if he’s convicted of that crime, a felony, Parrish won’t face prison time, according to the Animal League Defense Fund, an organization pushing for stronger penalties in animal abuse cases.
“The problem is in Oregon, the judge’s real authority is based on sentencing guidelines,” said Clatsop County District Attorney and Animal League Defense Fund board member Josh Marquis. “Even if a person in theory had multiple violent felony convictions, the maximum sentence a judge would be able to give them under Oregon law would be 60 days in jail, not a prison sentence.”
The judge denied Parrish’s request to be released from jail Tuesday. Bail was set at $100,000.
"Even if the judge wants to, he can't send them to prison," said Marquis.
Marion County sheriff’s deputies said Parrish was watching the 9-pound dog, Kudo, for his grandmother, who was out of state.
Parrish told deputies he got angry on Friday after Kudo nipped him, so he grabbed the dog and started punching him in the head. Deputies said Parrish also admitted to trying to strangle Kudo, according to a news release from the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Parrish told investigators he then decided to put the dog in the oven, which was preheated to cook food at 350 degrees, deputies said.
“Parrish said he was prepared to leave him there, but he suddenly heard his brother coming into the house,” the news release said.
Parrish' brother and father rescued Kudo and took him to a veterinarian. Three of Kudo's legs were badly burned, his hair was singed and he had cuts and bruises, deputies said.
Parrish, who has no criminal record, admitted to deputies that he has anger issues and snapped when dealing with the dog.
Parrish's father is taking care of Kudo and the dog will continue receiving care at the vet clinic.
REALLY???!!! Another one? I have been seeing a story almost every day like this!!!! Literally, EVERYDAY! What is going on?? I know I am late seeing this story apparently been out for a few days. EVERYDAY! Some little animal is being killed or tortured!! There are some really TOXIC human beings out there, DNA all screwed up or something! I am really scared of these people, they have NO remorse, they CAN'T feel as they probably don't have that part of the brain developed or something! No WONDER gun sales are up!! People are scared of these toxic zombies!! Yup, starts with little animals....
Stories like this is why I don't usually follow the news. I cannot stand stories on animal or child abuse. Poor little doggie, I bet he will have lots of issues trusting another human again. Horrible ugly monster.
I agree with the person who said we'll be seeing him in the news for killing again. Isn't it an accepted fact that animal torture in childhood is a sign of more heinous (than putting a #@* chihuahua into an oven!) things to come? Too bad they can't place him in mental health court for animal cruelty and court order psyche meds, evaluation and involuntary commitment. What am I saying - put him to sleep!

I think the some rehab is in order. Drop him in the hippo pen at the local zoo, so he could learn how to respect an animal before letting him around any of the small ones.
Hopefully some of his new room mates will have some "anger issues" with him.
oh my F'ing GOD, how does someone do this to a little creature.....just wait, animal abuse is the start, this piece of crap will soon do some dastardly deed to children, adults, etc. Get rid of him NOW !!! I sure hope the little dog isn't scarred for life and am so thankful the father and brother cared enough to help the little dog. Kick the crap our of your son and brother and throw him in the oven, eye for an eye !

There might be a good reason why the dog snaps at this POS.
Perhaps while they are getting the dog vet care they need to take this kid and get his anger issues dealt with. In his current state of mind he's going to do this type of thing again. Glad someone came home before he managed to kill the little dog. I think the punishment should be a little harsher because without consequences this kid isn't going to learn a thing.
This will not be the last time he is in the news for killing or hurting a living thing.
It's hard to believe the family is not aware of this guy's anger and self-control issues and would leave a tiny dog in his care. I wonder how many others he has hurt when he has "snapped." I just hope he never has children.
what kind of world do we live in that you can do that to an animal and not face prison time? Breaks my heart. Next thing you know he'll be making headlines for mass murder. Anyone who can do that to an animal doesn't deserve to live and is not safe to anyone, people or animals. I wish I could adopt that dog and spend the rest of it's life making up to it.Â

I don't live in Oregon, but those who do should start trying to change the laws there. Be active about getting them changes so that abusers like this one get actual punishment in the future.
How about sending him on an Outward Bound program to work on his anger issues... by himself... on a deserted island... for about 10 years... during which time the location of the island gets lost...

Yep, he looks like the next mass murderer!  Wont face prison time huh?  Hopefully an animal lover will run into this guy and deliver a little justice.    This is the type of person that needs to be locked up for a long time.  Â

No anger towards the two ladies, who abused 150 dogs, featured in the video as well? The guy is a scumbag for sure, but lets also bring attention to the fact that way too many people are allowed to be irresponsible with huge numbers of animals with little to no penalty. I dont know what other state's laws are on this but Oregon definitely needs to update theirs.
The dog nipped him because animals can sense when people are "off" and dangerous. It was rightfully fearful. Too bad it was a little dog and only got in a nip.
@Thunder I got bit by a dog that was playing ball in a field with its owner. I was near the play equipment at a park. The owner threw the ball in the general direction of the equipment, and the dog ran toward the kids and bit me in the thigh. It was a golden retriver, so I guess he was trying to fetch me instead of the ball. I don't really consider myself unhinged, or off.

Sometimes dogs are just stupid animals. That's the whole reason it's absolutely terrible for a person to hurt one. We are superior to these beasts so we have every responsibility to treat them with respect and love. Anything less should be punished vigorously!

 @Thunder my dog (my avatar) is a great judge of people. If you address her in calm, gentle tones and want nothing more than to give her a treat, pat her head, scratch her back or rub her belly, you've made a new best friend. If you are nothing but nice to her humans, same thing. If you try to do to her what this guy did to this poor pooch, I take zero responsibility for the deep gashes and serious bite wounds.

Once he is out of jail, I hope someone beats the crap out of him and makes him understand what that dog went through. Admin, you can punt my account for this, I dont care.
