Man arrested for allegedly choking, punching pregnant woman

YELM, Wash. -- A 53-year-old man is under arrested for allegedly punching and trying to strangle a pregnant woman during an argument at a Yelm home Thursday.

A 911 call for help for a domestic violence situation brought Thurston County deputies to a home in the 12300 of Zelelr Rd. SE just after 7 p.m. Deputies reported they could hear arguing as they arrived and went inside the home to talk to the man and woman inside.

The man, identified by deputies as Mark Mason, told deputies the woman had hit him in the head with a frying pan during the argument, which he says began because she was pregnant and using drugs. He added the woman was 6 months pregnant and they had both been drinking after learning of complications related to her pregnancy.

The woman told investigators they had been arguing and that the man attempted to strangle her and threatened to kill her, then punched and kicked her, police said.

She said she used the frying pan in self defense, and then Mason knocked her to the ground and kicked her in the stomach, police said.

The woman later learned at the hospital that her unborn child was dead, police said. Investigators are still awaiting word on the exact cause of death.

Mason has been arrested for second degree assault from domestic violence and felony harassment, deputies said.
