Man drowns while retrieving ball from Lake Washington
KIRKLAND, Wash. - Police say a man drowned Wednesday night while trying to retrieve a ball from Lake Washington.
The incident unfolded during a family gathering at Denny Park when a woman asked the 54-year-old man if he'd get the ball out of the water for her.
The woman and the man's wife watched him swim out to the ball, struggle, then go under.
King County divers later found the man's body and brought him to shore, where he was pronounced dead.
His name has not been released.

Death is coming to all of us. Ever think about how God will take your life away? JESUS SAVES
What a sad day for the family. I wonder if he had another health condition that caused this (i.e. heart attack, stroke, seizure, etc.).  Common sense tells me that a 54 year old man who knows he can't swim would not go after it, so that tells me something else happened when he got out there. Â
That's so sad! The man does a kind deed and winds up dying. Not to jump to conclusions, but I'm thinking he had a medical emergency in the water.
Â
RIP to the man going out while doing a kind deed.
Should have used the ball for target practice.
Will there be a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the ball? It wouldn't surprise me one bit.
Don't people know how to swim anymore?
@mstipton Learning to swim is something that many of us take for granted. It's largely an economic issue.
Â
60% of black kids can't swim, twice the rate for white kids.Â
Â
Black kids drown at 3 times the average rate.Â
Â
The numbers for Hispanic children are almost as bad as for blacks.Â
Â
My parents FORCED me to learn to swim as a toddler. I grew up surfing, playing water polo, and was in the water all the time. Many children simply don't have those opportunities.
Â
So yes, there are a lot of people that simply do not know how to swim.Â
That's just....screwed up sad.
What a loss, just to retrieve a ball.
Â
The story does not elaborate (besides an obvious physical struggle) the man had on why he might of went under. Whether he was in poor shape, or had some other time of ailment is unknown to us.
Â
At least he went out trying to do a good deed, and may he be remembered in part for that!
Wow - over a ball. Â How horrible for his friends and family. Â
Very sad. I this in number 12 this year.
Â
R.I.P. Sir
Why didnt someone else at the gathering swim out to help him.
@Chitownhawksfan Tater salad bends. Most of them probably get winded going up a flight of stairs is my guess.
@jelisized I dont understand what your tater salad bends comment means?
@Chitownhawksfan It means they're probably fat lards who would have drowned trying to rescue him. Realism doesn't mix well with PC.
@jelisized Who is the "them" you refer to?
@TheTruncheon "Them" is the people present. Fishing much?
Wow. Over a ball. That's really sad. I hope the man's wife doesn't try to place a bunch of blame on the shoulders of the woman who asked him to get the ball, I can't imagine how awful they both feel.
@spacegoddess I hope the wife doesn't blame the ball manufacturer.
