Man injured in fall from lift at cold storage facility
TACOMA, Wash. - One man was hospitalized Saturday after falling from a lift at a cold storage facility in Tacoma, fire officials said. A second man was trapped on the malfunctioning lift in subzero temperatures and had to be rescued.
Medics and fire crews responded to the scene, the VersaCold storage and warehouse facility at 26th Avenue and Pacific Highway East, at about 8:45 a.m. after receiving a report of an injured man.
Arriving at the scene, medics found one man who had fallen from the lift and a second man still trapped in the lift. The injured man was treated and taken to a local hospital.
Emergency officials said it appeared that the two men were up in the lift inside the storage facility, which is kept at a temperature of 10 degrees below zero, when the lift quit working.
One of the men apparently started to climb down but slipped and fell to the floor.
After the injured man was taken away by ambulance, Tacoma Fire Department personnel got the lift working again and brought the trapped man down to floor level. He was uninjured.
The 196,000-square-foot Versacold facility provides cooler, freezer, and ice cream storage, as well as refrigerated dock space.
